Has anyone attempted to upgrade the stock SR5 headlights with Limited and above versions?

I saw an earlier post about the connector plugs possibly being different between the stock SR5 headlights and the Limited and above headlights. I kinda want the higher intensity and DRL marking strip of the higher trimmed headlights.

Anyone attempted to upgrade the headlights with this version headlight, part: 81150-0C260 (I cut and pasted from Ebay and it is the left side headlight....for reference only). I would only get the headlights without the auto leveling.

    Thoughts....and Happy 4th in advance!

I didn't realize the 2022s had different level headlights.

    I learned something today..

Following as well. It’s ridiculous that’s it’s a $395 option from the factory installed but over 1k for each side through part store. That makes no sense ‍♂️

Be aware that [at least] Platinum headlamps are CAN-BUS driven.
The wiring harness on the lamp itself are a constant 12V+, 12V- and about 7 thin wires.
All of this means that the lamp gets power, and it's functionality is driven by the computer.

In other words, there are no separate low beam, high beam, parking wires-like we're all used to from the past.
Tread very carefully and do all your homework, before spending stupid amount of $$ on the high end model headlamps.

    I don't know.
Here's (see pic) the connector from OP's part number, and it's exactly the same on my Platinum.

What does your/SR5/Limited wiring for headlight looks like?

This is the picture that got me thinking about my SR5 headlight connector, thus asking my original question.

Here's a PDF of headlight with ECU wiring schematic (provided by another member here).
I'm only speculating, but if SR5/etc has "standard" wiring and higher models have different set up (with CANbus), then you may not be able to run these as easily as you think.
Getting signal out of a CAN bus is one thing, but going the other way around?
Hope you guys don't end up taking headlights apart, just to rewire individual components inside of them separately; that would be a bit :/

I'll hang around just to see what SR5 wiring is like; good luck.

Ignorant question here but I kind of like the headlights that came with my SR5. They are a huge upgrade over what was on my '04 and look pretty cool. Can someone tell me what the difference is between the '22 SR5 headlights and '22 higher trim versions and why it would be worth making that upgrade?

    They are both LED
But the higher trim lights have a big white glowing piece at night, and they are all LED.
The lower trim have halogen style turn signals, and I believe the main headlight housing is a reflector style, while the upper trim looks more similar to a projector style. Whether that makes any difference in light output, I don't know. But the upper trim ones do look fancy at night.
There is also something about auto leveling, but thats probably just a gimmick. Oh, and the turn signal on the upper trim lights is sequential, instead of just a regular blinking light.

Thanks jb. That's a great breakdown. I can see why one would want the higher trim versions.

Good grief that's a lot of contacts for a headlight supposedly controlled by canbus.

I see the 2 power contacts I'd expect, but for canbus I wouldn't expect to see more than 2 or 3 contacts.

I don't think Toyota would use such a high pin count connector without some other reason....

Edit: just saw the schematic you shared.
Looks like they have 3 wires going from the headlight to the level sensor in the rear of the truck. Surprised Toyota took a hybrid approach, I would've anticipated the level sensor to also be on the canbus by a module in the rear. Yikes.

Still, way more positions in the headlight connector than is actually used. Hmmm.....

I have heard that the lower level MSR (multi surface reflector) LED headlights are quite good.

I have an SR5. I was pleasantly surprised by how bright the headlights are. I live in an area with plenty of unlit roads and with the low beams on I can see just fine. Kick on the fog lights and you have a pretty impressive area of light in front of the truck.

There are none. If you leave the "drl" setting on, it just means the headlights are on during the day

With the popularity of blacking-out car parts, I'm surprised that the MSR headlights aren't the more popular type. They look blacked-out, and I think they look better than the projector headlights. They are also slightly serviceable, having a replaceable turn signal bulb, making them slightly less likely to have an expensive LED failure in the future.
I am starting to see a lot of 20teen vehicles with failed LED DRLs now. One headlight will have dead or dimmed out LEDs, looks janky, and the LEDs can't be repaired, if you have OCD it'll cost big $$ just to get the DRL working again.

Make sure it covers LED lighting.

My wife has a 2020 Corolla hatchback, she hit a mattress on the freeway, messed up the LED headlight a little bit, I thought about buying a new headlight, it is $1200! For a Corolla that cost $20,750. 2 headlights would be nearly 12% of the original cost of the car.
So, I just JB welded it.

I don't know where you are but you just bought a truck that costs minimum $40k and you want to screw around with the electrical system. If you break it who is paying to fix it. I can guarantee it is not Toyota. You want the headlights you should have bought them with the truck. I would not do this.

Modding our vehicles is quite popular around here. It isn’t for everyone though.

By the time I have the ceramic coat, clear vinyl paint protection tonneau and running boards I have 100k Canadian into it. I am not going to be screwing around with the electrics on a truck that I have a 10 yr warranty on.

I ordered mine without the premium led but curious if they only Lou have 2 options for headlights or do they have a couple variation on DRL and headlights combinations . I’ve been looking for info but don’t see much
