I was driving along today and it hit me what my mystery noise sounds like. It sounds like the top of the shock is loose and moving up and down a bit on the top mount? When I had 5100's put on my F-150 they didn't tighten the tops while on the ground and that is similar to what it sounded like. It is kind of a muffled popping noise and more prevalent over bumps and when I hit the brakes. I bought this current truck used and I think it is all stock but it might not be IDK.

Anyone have experience this or am I back to smoking my socks looking for a cause.

Check the wiring harness on the front of the passenger firewall. That’s what mine was and that’s what the noise sounded like. There are threads on here where it’s discussed. The wiring harness falls off of the support bracket and flops around over bumps causing that noise. Zip tie in place.

Thank you, I will check that and I am hoping that is it. It sometimes sounds like it is inside the cab and sometimes like it is outside. I will do a search on here too.

Jack the truck off the ground and start shaking things by hand?

That is on my to do list. It mostly happens while braking though so I am wondering if it is a brake caliper, shoe or ball joint end and like it is pre-loading beforehand. I will see if I can shake it out.

zipties to pull the bundle of wires in tighter towards the metal bracket. This solved a rattle that I swore was in passenger side dash while driving. Pop the hood and look passenger side of the firewall. I had thought there was some loose chunk behind the glovebox from the sound. This was happening at certain speeds or bumps. May not be same thing you have going on.

Look around sway bar end links for shiny metal that might mean it's bumping when positions are just right.

Holy Tundras, I think this might have been part / all of the solution. I cannot believe that connection bundle made that much noise even though it seemed tight in the factory connector. I used a large zip tie and a piece of rubber to wrap around the bundle and secured it like pictured above.

I also removed the plastic cover that was on top of a metal box wire cover thing under the passenger seat. It was only held on with a couple of plastic push pin connectors and was loose and rattling.

I secured the cover on the plastic box next to the wire bundle pictured above. The cover was pretty loose and would rattle when shook.

I tightened the 4 body mount bolts under the cab
