Couple of quick questions about the new T I have not seen discussed.......

On the auto stop/start feature, can you disable it or is it on all the time? Not a fan of these systems but there has usually been a work around on most cars I have owned

Are you guys running regular grade fuel or do you have to run premium for the turbo?

    Thanks in advance

I have run 87-93 octane. Feels little better with 93, but not needed. Runs fine with 87 octane. I don't think you can disable it. But, not sure.

O, I don't have problem communicating with you. After all this is a forum and that is what it is used for.

I leave it on but don’t completely push my brake pedal down all the way when stopped this way the engine stays running.

    I don't own or drive a '22.

Pretty sure I've read on this here Tundra board that if you don't stand on the brake pedal as you come to a stop the insideous stop-start feature will not engage/activate.

    YMMV.

It’s usually pretty evident when you need premium. The dashboard will say something like “premium fuel only” next to the little gas pump and arrow that indicate which side the fuel door is on. You’d also find it in the manual and monroney sticker.

As far as the start/stop feature, there’s a button on the dash to the left of the steering wheel to disable it. You need to push it every time you start the vehicle if you want it disabled.

I normally hate auto start stop systems, but this one is the best I have used. Easy to control with the brake pedal and the starts are smooth and quick with very little shudder. I like the stop timer and I have been making a game if seeing how much off time I can accumulate on my commute.

I only push all the way and activate it if I know it will be a long light. I also use the “hold” feature at the same time

Im still waiting to take delivery of my new Tundra, but the owners manual shows 87 octane or higher. I plan to use regular and I live at 5900 above sea level.
As far as the Stop and Start feature, it can be disabled via a switch but you have to do it every time you start the truck. Apparently if you don’t mash down hard on the brake pedal it doesn’t turn off the engine if you forget to turn the system off.

Yes, it can be turned off, but must be done every time you start the truck. Personally, I hate the feature and would love for it to be permanently disabled. I run 87 with no complaints, runs smooth and I get 19-20 mpg with little highway driving.

I like that it takes significant brake pedal pressure to engage stop start function and wouldn't be shutting it off with the deactivate button if it didn't shut off and immediately come back on when shifting into park. What's up with that? Also I can't imagine it's good to shut the engine off if turbos are still spinning since oil pressure to turbo bearings would stop also.

Conventional wisdom is what, 50-60 years old? A lot has changed since then.

Personally, I like the stop start system. Trigger the engine to shut off at long lights, keep it running for stop signs all by controlling brake pressure. Also, need to wait a few seconds after the engine has shut off before shifting to park to keep the engine on otherwise the engine will start.

    Since y'all are discussing this, even though it doesn't apply to my 2014, I have a question;
My wife's XT5 does this and you can't turn it off.
When I stop, I let off the brake a sec and it starts back up and keeps running.
I don't like driving her car anyway.

But, the question is, how does the AC blow cold when the engine isn't running?
Because it does if I leave the engine off when stopped..

    Just curious...TIA

The AC doesn't blow cold, per se, but could possibly be the recirculated air coming from inside your cold cabin that makes it seem cool still. Once the engine stops, the AC compressor stops, so it won't be conditioning the air anymore. It is very noticeable on really hot days, the air coming out of the vents when the engine stops will be much warmer than when the engine is running, and eventually the auto start/stop will kick the engine back on and display a message about air conditioning.

Evaporator is still cold… but it doesn’t last. Eventually the system will trigger an engine restart if the cabin gets too hot

Once that oil wedge between the crank journal and bearing has disappeared you have a scenario where it's possible for metal to metal contact which equals extra wear. It's widely known that startup up of a combustion engine is when most wear occurs. The only thing the start stop feature does is benefit the manufacturer and their cafe rating.

The last thing I want is a turbocharger still spinning and the pressurized oil supply stopping because of start stop feature..

The correct statement is probably something like cold start is the worst thing for an engine. The reason was tolerances of components. Fuel would get into the oil pan, pistons slap occurred more easily, and of course little oiling initially. A hot restart is not so bad, especially in a modern engine. There are some teardown of hybrid engines on YouTube where it can see the effects on bearing surfaces. Stop/start does hardly any damage.

Wife's Ridgeline does the exact same thing. No way to permanently disable it. We've become accustomed to hitting the disable button as soon as we start it and shift to drive.
This is an eco-fad the manufacturers are using to clear their conscience, even though putting in the feature probably wastes more resources than ever reclaimed by shutting off the truck for 6 seconds a day.

When the Start/Stop function is engaged A counter showing the seconds comes up. What is its purpose?
