    Hi all!

New to the forum, just picked up my 3rd gen as of tuesday! so far, so good with mostly everything, but i'm having issues with the voice recognition on my truck.

For starters, i have an android and have android auto connected. when i hit the voice button on the steering wheel and say commands like "Call Mom", "Call Peter", "Call Jason", etc, etc, it just won't work. it states that i don't have anyone in my contacts under that, but when i click on the phone icon on my screen through android auto and browse my contact list, they are definitely there.

voice commands worked completely fine on my tacoma without a hitch. what am i doing wrong here?

my first assumption is the voice command on the steering wheel is a separate entity from android auto's contact list, so i actually do NOT have any contacts in my list. am i right or wrong here? is the voice command on the steering wheel a part of toyota or the tundra itself, and not tied into my phone's contact list? do i need to manually sync or add my contacts into the tundra's profile?

    Thank you in advanced!

First, I would read your owners manual for specifics on setting up and using that feature. 2nd, if you cant figure it out, stop by your dealer and get some assistance. They generally have someone around that can help set up features like this quickly without a service appointment.

thanks for the advice, i may visit a dealership and see what they have to say about it.

I MIGHT have figured it out myself. it does seem like they're separate from eachother. while my phone is connected via Android auto, the steering wheel voice PTT does not work when I say "call james", so I'm forced to use "hey google" from my phone to make a call.

when I go into toyota's settings within the infotainment screen, disable android auto, and enable phone and media, the PTT works when I say "call james", but then now I no longer have it connected for android auto and I lose access to all my apps on my phone.

that really bums me out that I can't use the voice PTT feature while having it connected via android auto. if anyone has success with their androids connected via Android auto + they're able to use the voice PTT on their steering wheel to make calls, please do let me know what I'm doing wrong. thank you!

You can only do one or the other. Same w Apple CarPlay. Need to say ‘Hey Siri call…’ when in CarPlay. You can disconnect the phone from Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and use the native Toyota commands, but not both.

I am on travel so not near my Tundra to test. But I thought a short press brought up the Toyota system, and a long press brought up Apple CarPlay or android auto.
Granted, yes, if you are connected to Apple CarPlay, the Tundra will use CarPlay to make the call.

This is true. However, still doesn’t work for me. I don’t know if it just doesn’t recognize my voice, or what the problem is, but I can’t get any voice commands to work. The most frustrating one is when in Apple CarPlay I have google maps up and hit the microphone to say a destination - literally not a single time has it worked. It just says “sorry, I didn’t get that”

Try “Hey Toyota “ first then say call James

This hasn't worked for me. Saying "Hey Toyota" to prompt it, then saying "Call James" while it's listening for the command, it says "there are no contacts in your list with that name" or something along those lines. same with hitting the voice button the left side of your steering wheel.

It holds true that if you're connected via apple carplay/android auto, you can't use the Toyota voice commands.

so i just tested it out on my vehicle and can confirm that when you press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel, it'll activate android's voice command(hey google). I tried calling someone and requesting directions to a destination and it was successful each time. Thank you again to all who have provided input for my issue!

Maybe in regards to your situation, you need to go into your phone and re-train your voice so it can correctly process what you're trying to ask of it!
