Yup. The wastegates are still problematic but i have really only seen 3 or 4 turbos replaced in our shop. And we are a really high volume shop. The day before thanksgiving we had 187 cars come through the shop. Every time we have to re-torque the axle shafts on the new tundra i just feel like "Really Toyota?"

I bought a '19 a year and a half ago because I didn't want the headache of a new model. Was looking for a '17 or '18 with a tranny cooler but could not find one with low enough miles. VERY happy with the '19, had an '01 that I bought new and the only thing I had to replace outside of normal wear issues was a radiator. Sold it at 200K miles

Wait, $32K for an engine? Is this a Lambo or McLaren? Ridiculous, absolute clown world situation.

Really feel for the guys dealing with this sh!t.

I've seen a bunch of Lexus GX's blow engines going through water on the GXOR group on facebook. It happens often enough that its a running joke any time anyone posts a video of a water crossing now. Everyone thinks they can hit the water at 50mph and it sprays up into the inlets in the fenders.

My guess is the OP's bumper may have had something to do with it as well. Depending on how the wheel well liners needed to be cut its possible the water can get up inside there easier.

I believe so. Never thought of getting a snorkel because well I just never really had plans to take my truck swimming or anywhere deep. Either way, they don’t make any for the 22s yet.

We have already located an engine for mine, has 1k miles on it. Right now insurance and dealership are going back & forth on the repair cost/labor work. Dealer believes it should be a lot higher than what insurance claims.

I can't imagine labor to swap the motor should be more than $4-5k on the high end. I know when guys have had their Ecoboosts replaced its like 11-12k total including ~$3500 in labor. $6-7k for a remained engine, $3500 in labor, and then some other misc parts(they usually require new water pump, thermostat, and some other stuff be installed to the tune of a few hundred dollars)

Both their labor estimate and parts estimate seem insane.

It always happens like that. Insurance wants to pay a certain price even though the dealer wants more. Just lots of dumb internal politics to deal with for the dealership. The dealership wants the most money possible, the tech wants to get paid well, and insurance doesn't want to shell out a lot of money, yada yada.

$10000 for labor is stupid though. Thats probably 3x what it should realistically be. I know swapping a motor sounds scary but its really not that bad. I've pulled engines out of way tighter engine bays(it was actually the engine, transmission and transfer case in one unit) in one day in my garage with a harbor freight lift and whatever shade tree mechanics tools I had laying around. A shop with actual lifts and good tools should make easy work of it.

Ya that labor is a bit ridiculous. At our labor rate that would be over 55 hours of labor which is definitely too much. Id say maybe 30-35 hours at most would be fair.

The bumper install seems like a good guess. The air filter did look like a spray of muddy water hit it. So if there was some shifting around of the tubes and connections maybe something didn't get reconnected properly resulting in some water sneaking in.

You’ll need to relocate breather tubes, seal up electronics, and tidy things up to prevent water from getting sucked in the other 100 holes in your engine. However, even if you don’t plan on going swimming with your Vehicle, having a higher-than-stock intake will help mitigate water intake when splashing through the occasional stream crossing or mud hole.

Diesels have an easier time with water fordings which is why the military uses them.

I hate this for the OP but I'm glad that insurance is paying for it. They are getting ripped off badly though.

Hate to see this and good to see the OP insurance is taking care of him. That replacement cost is the real surprise.

Read similar issue on IH8Mud. Of course it involves the bullet proof 5.7 in 2016 Landcruiser. The engine replacement is not nearly as costly. The following is a copy/paste from that thread…

The 200’s air intake is like a shop vac in the inner fender. The vented plastic wheel well liner is designed to reduce dust and water splash from getting into the air box and generally works. Hitting a water hole at speed and/or excessive throttle can result in water getting in the air box. I’ve seen this on a couple 200s and have seen threads here on this. A snorkel helps mitigate this situation. Aftermarket front bumpers that modify the wheel well plastic can make this worse. There was one 200 at LCDC this summer that had a hydro lock situation at a minor water crossing due to excessive speed and the wheel well liner had not been reinstalled after bumper installation. Fortunately this didn’t result in any major engine damage.

Especially considering they will likely lift the cab/body off of the vehicle as we have seen with the waste gate issues. Plenty of room

I work at a Toyota dealership and I've seen three of these come in with blown engines and I've heard it's machining issues from factory poor cleaning metal shavings in oil gallerys and journals causing oil starvation ending in a ruined engine. We have two on the lot right now ones getting a new engine in ones gonna be waiting 5-8 months for an engine

Can you imagine paying top dollar for a truck that you can't drive for 8 months. What is the person supposed to drive while the truck sits?
