As I dropped the deposit for my Tundra, I was told By Toyota sales manager that they highly recommend me to buy the rust proof module (i forgot the exact name of it), and they don't suggest any sprayed type rust proofing for their hybrid model.

    So my questions are:

    1. can the module be installed by myself? if so, will it be cheaper a lot than doing it via Dealership?

    2. is there any aftermarket module that works the same or similar?

    3. is there any harm to do the sprayed proofing?

    thanks in advanced

I think your dealership is lying to you. A rust proofing module is at best a sacrificial anode (block of zinc bolted to frame maybe?). I don't think that's going to do much. A spray on coating (keep off moisture) should be OK since the electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and transmission. The batteries are under the seat as well.

I would personally not do anything dealer installed and contact Toyota directly about spray on coatings.

For what it's worth, there are plenty of electronic modules under a modern cars/trucks and they spray coatings those.

so the spray thing, like Rust Check, as long as it's oil based, should be good for Hybrid cars, right?

Those modules are snake oil. They simply do not work.

What makes a hybrid's rust prevention needs any different than a non-hybrid? Prius has been around since '97 and I don't see them rusting to heck unless it was never washed up in the rust belt.

The dealer saw another chance to sell something not needed. Like selling nitrogen filled tires for $100/each per fill. Don't fall for it. Wash your vehicle regularly and it will be just fine.

I would just go with something like Woolwax or FluidFilm.

They probably dont want you to because then they have to deal with it when they do work on the truck. It leaves a grease/oil residue on everything.

I guess if I were a dealer, I would “highly recommend” you giving me more money, too.

Nashville roads get salted every time it rains and drops near freezing. We have very wet winters, so this happens more often than you might think. I’ve been really impressed with Amsoil HD Metal Protector.

I was going to say This is not 1976, you can not do anything to it and should be good. But then i remembered I was still seeing throwaway frames from the recall outside my local Toyota dealer deep into last year. So I’d say just do aftermarket solutions if you’re worried about it.

My dealer specifically told us NOT to rust proof Toyota hybrid vehicles and it could even void your warranty. I'm not sure why, but they said don't do it.

This is a Toyota we are talking about. Some of the most horrifically rusted vehicles I have looked under recently were Toyota vehicles. I see posts on the GXOR group of people with fist sized holes in the frames of their GX's.

I sprayed mine with Krown up here in Ontario a few days after I got it. With the amount of salt we throw down here it’s a no brainer - cars last 3 seasons before the rust shows up, if that. For $150cdn each year, you can get 10+ years without any frame rust. That’s a win to me.

I use Krown on other vehicles and plan on using on a Tundra in the future. Safe for all vehicles. Check out their website. It does swell weatherstripping on lower doors where it drains out of openings.

You must live in a place that doesn’t use copious amounts of salt on the roads 6 months out of the year.

If you do nothing a 3-4 year old frame will look like something you’d see in a junk yard.

Their standard rate is $159 plus HST (13%) for a full size pick up. If you ask for it they will just give you $10 off like that so I paid $149 plus HST.

Actually they use plenty of salt around here and even more on campus where I work. If roads could develop medical conditions the ones at work would all have high blood pressure. There is almost zero rust on the bottom of my LC and I've never done a thing; I also drive it on the beach and tow a boat.

However, look under a brand new F150 and you would think they store them at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Reviving an older thread, but I've been seeing this same statement from fellow Canadians, and I'm wondering if anyone else has info from Toyota?

I'm wondering why they are saying that undercoating will void your warranty!?

I’m not sure of Canada specific situations. I applied a Canadian product (Corrosion Free) to the frame/undercarriage of my 2022 Tundra TRD Pro earlier this year. I am in the US, and I think US laws would make it very difficult for a dealership to imply any failure was due to my undercoating and deny a warranty claim.

I used Fluid Film on our 2022 (non-hybrid) Highlander last year. My wife ran over a piece of flat cardboard on the highway which somehow ignited and then ignited the fluid film (that's my best theory). Wife, kids, and dogs got out with about a minute to spare. Don't think I'll be using oil based rust proofing again; end result seems worse than rust:

Glad all are safe. I follow a lot of YouTubers that swear by Fluid Film. A few have done tests holding a torch to it and it doesn't ignite. This is for the non aerosol spray. Even with a propellent, that should flash off in minutes. Weird.

So, update, I sent a question to Toyota Canada, this is the answer I got from them, asking about Rustproofing a Hybrid, not 100% clear either
