I have a question regarding my fuel tank capacity, the manual states I have either 85 liters (22 US gallon) 122 liters (32 US gallon)

Toyota Canada website shows the Tundra 4X4 Limited has the larger 122 liter tank.

When I filled up today, the Distance to Empty Range shows about 600KM, (373 Miles) if I had the larger tank I would have expected to see closer to 900KM. (560 miles)

Seems I have the smaller tank which contradicts the website info.

Anyone able to confirm the tank size on the 2022 4X4 Limited TRD Off Road model?

The distance to empty will change depending on the total average fuel economy. You could look under your truck, if the tank is really long, it’s the large tank. Basically the large tank goes from the rear axle up to a cross member near the back of the transfer case.

I saw it mentioned somewhere that the reserve is like 6 gallons (after the warning light comes on). I had the same question, mine is 32, but on “empty” I’m only filling around 28.

The fuel pumps in these trucks ain’t cheap and lots like to deplete the fuel to almost nothing like a game . When I had my shop I did at least 2 fuel pumps a week and I bet you that if you didn’t run the fuel so low I would have changed out less . The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel to speak . It’s probably 4-8” off the bottom of the tank to the top of the fuel pump but I’ve never done one in this generation .
So you only put 28 gallons which means whatever is left across that entire tank ain’t very high . Yes you can go further than what the light says but I wouldn’t . It ain’t worth it

Lol I've been in this exact situation with my 1794, which should have a large tank.

In my case, the fuel gauge and miles left projection would hide a about 10 gallons from me...

The only way I was able to confirm that I have a larger tank is by driving another about 50 miles after refuel light is on, and when refueling, it showed that I got 28 gallons of gas, which means I got a larger tank. So I was content

Nobody else knew, and it's not written anywhere if your tank has a large tank or not. Only place would be on a window sticker... Or ask Toyota service advisor to look it up by your vin, but in my case it did not show.

And yes, you should have about 6-10 extra gallons of gas after your fuel light lights up.

Canadian Limited TRD OR has the larger tank, but as previously mentioned there is a lot of “reserve” to help keep the pump submerged/ cooled due to tank shape. I don’t think that “reserve” is counted in the distance to empty but I’m not gonna try running mine past 0 km range to find out. The most I’ve put in mine was around 90-100 litres.

This is something that annoys me on my truck. I have the larger tank, but when it shows half empty, I go to fill up and it only takes like 10 or 11 gallons. Seems like there is a huge amount of "reserve" in there if it is truly a 32 or 33 gallon tank.

Mine is a Double Cab so it has the 22 gallon tank. However, when the fuel light comes on and I have 50 miles or so of range it will take over 23 gallons. Not sure if they are just being super conservative with the tank capacity, but it definitely holds a lot more than 22 gallons.

I guess I'm not sure. How can you tell? Is it marked on the tank somewhere? There is nothing listed on the window sticker.

It was shown in pics that the pump is not submerged in 6 gallons of fuel, its not designed/mounted in a way where you need 6 gallons of reserve to cover up to the pickup point of the pump, the other guy spouting he replaces fuel pumps twice a week, guess what its a consumable product and that is why we run fuel filters - might as well say I replace brakes on Tundra models twice a week. Doesnt hold any weight to the conversation imo.

The people who disagree and defends this bad programming are tundra specific fanbois not Toyota fanbois (I am a yota fanboi but dont defend this retarded Tundra programming), you guys keep on trucking and saying they have a inferior pump design which always requires 6 gallons of reserve at all times or you risk blowing it up and stranding yourself on the side of the road :goingcrazy:

Thank you for the replies, I'm very surprised to hear that the fuel reserve is that much.

I usually refuel when I'm at 1/4 tank with about 200KM (125 miles) range remaining.

My average fuel consumption is about 14 liters/100KM (16.8 US MPG) so that should leave about 28 liters (7.4 US gallons) left in the tank.

The first time I refueled I got about 67 liters to the first click of the pump, I thought maybe an air lock was causing it stop before it was full, next time I filled up I waited for 30 seconds after the first click of the pump and then started the pump again, it clicked off again after less than a liter of fuel pumped so concluded my tank was around 95 liters (25 US gallons), which made no sense.

The tank showed full and the Range to Empty showed 604KM (374 miles)

So based on the above info I must of had closer to 50 liters (13 US Gallons) of fuel left at 1/4 tank.

I'll check the tanks when I get a chance to get underneath, but based on the info provided above I'll operate on the fact that I have the larger tank.

Just for comparison, if anyone has a SR or SR5 what does your distance to Empty Range show when you fill it up.

    David.

I have an SR5 premium crewmax TRD OR with the bigger tank. I filled up this past weekend and was wondering the same thing. I went down to 14 miles to empty and put in 26.5 gallons. 6 gallon reserve is silly. I’d rather my gauge be accurate and I won’t go down to E.

My SR5 crewmax TRD OR 4x4 usually reads around 420 miles DTE when filled. When I get down to zero miles left on the dash I can put in 27-28 gallons. That matches what others are saying. About a 4 gallon reserve when “empty”.

Confirm all the others, I have the 32 gallon tank, had 69 miles of range it said and took 27 gallons. It said I had 520 some miles of range- if I wanted to I bet you could go 600 miles on a tank if it were highway miles.

Keep in mind the service station pump clicks off WELL BEFORE truly full to keep gasoline from messing with the EVAP system. Don't know exactly how much more it will take, but in a quest to find out, I slowly and carefully added (knowing full well the risks to charcoal canister etc) approx eight litres after the nozzle clicked off.

This, plus the reserve, explains why "filling the tank" is not a good gauge for determining actual tank capacity, or DTE for that matter, which is wholly dependent on the driver and his or her inputs, location, load, tires, time of year, accessories, idling, etc.

That's interesting, I wonder if it's easy enough to remove the EVAP canister, (or vent line) just to experiment with how much extra fuel you can safely add after the first click before it flows into the EVAP System.

You were able to add eight liters (2.1 US Gallons) so when needed for a long run, it would be good to know how much extra you could add safely to maximize range.

There is always the difference between pumps, how early or late they click off, so I would still need a good safety margin.

On my previous vehicle, 2017 KIA Sorento, I usually topped it off prior to seeing a YouTube video on why you shouldn't top off the fuel, fortunately I didn't have any issues with that car at all after almost 200,000 KM.

I've also made a habit of refueling when I'm around 1/4 tank, as I did damage my in tank fuel pump on a 2008 Mercedes ML320 from running it empty once (still showed 27KM DTE)
BTW the ML320 Diesel was far from trouble free, a very nice vehicle but the trouble started just before the warranty ran out and continued until I traded it in at 250,000KM, clunky transmission, oil leaks, steering rack failure, plus a few other electronic issues.

Derek, thanks for the input, as others have said it's a bit frustrating to have a large tank, but being unable to use it fully when needed almost negates the point of a large tank.

I occasionally take long trips for work and chose the Limited as it had the larger tank but seems I will be limited to about 500 KM between fuel stops or less when towing.

    David.

Nice, do you remember what the DTE range showed, and did you top it off after the pump first clicked?

Holy smokes over $2.00 liter, is this recent and what Province are you in?

We are around $1.48 if I travel out to Abbotsford just outside of Metro Vancouver area.

    Cheers,

    David.

That was from July in SK, I would have pre paid $200 so wouldn’t have filled past the click. Summer driving with 295/70/18 it was getting 22L/100km in the city, the range is 500/600km when I fill up and that was the most gas I’ve put in it at one time I like to fill at about 400km.

Confirming my 22 Ltd OR has the 32 tank - BUT even when running right down past E, the most I've been able to put in is 26.5 gal. So it appears they have a 6 gallon reserve.
Seems like overkill and defeats part of the reason for having the larger tank! I don't like running on E even if I know there is that giant fudge factor.

Ok so that's interesting, your country shows Canada but your gas is in Gallons, didn't know they sold gas by the gallon in Canada.

    Lots of stuff!
Yaboy, good fuel savings!, it looks like about a 25% reduction in the gas prices compared to your first fill up in Canada.

If you have a smaller tank, like a 22 gallon, is it possible and/or easy to install a larger 32 gallon tank? I have a SR5 Premium TRD Sport and only getting 275 mile range is kind of annoying, especially here in Montana where every major town is at least 100 miles away from each other.

I was seeing some trucks like that but waited for a 32 gallon tank. I hope you can find something. Seems like it should just be a switch out but who knows.
