I just handed down an unused gun to my son, and he's 30. I'll always share your disagreement...

He handed down his old .270 to his son, and you couldn't slap the smile off his face with a 2x4...

A couple of years ago when my son got out of the Navy, I gave him my dad's 45 and my father in law's 38sp. Both his grandfathers had passed while he was away in the military and I though he should have them.

I hold a MA resident(required) and a CT and Utah non resident permit. CT is for when I go down to the marina/in-laws, and the Utah covers me in 22 states

I’ve got two 16 gages and two .22s from my dad. They are in rough shape due to neglect in my parents damp basement, I will be sending them out for restoration, then the kids will draw straws for what they get.

Not sure when other states grandfather hunters in without needing the certification. Texas is '71, so I don't need it here. I might ever hunt in another state; so it'll be a good thing to remember to check.

My wife's dad (not my grandson's blood GGF) handed down a 16ga. to him. A Winchester Model 12, with a muzzle brake installed. GGF was an avid waterfowler (in Louisiana), and that gun might have had 10k rounds run through it. It's in the best shape of any 70+ year old gun I've ever seen.

Edit - - this sounded a little like oneuppery - wasn't meant that way. Handing down guns is always a good thing.

I think handing down guns - in any shape - is a great way to connect generations. Thinking of how your dad or granddad hunted, cleaning the thing - - all of that nostalgia is great.

The FN Browning Sweet 16 is in good shape, it was in their bedroom. The Winchester 37 single shot need some barrel reblueing and stock repair. I don’t really know the round count. The Mossburg.22 was my grandfathers and was made in 1910. It’s the only one I’ve shot and we were hitting the target at 200yds. The other .22 is a Winchester lever action made in the 60s for 1 year, so it's an oddball

Imagining your dad or granddad hunting with a gun they gave you is priceless nostalgia.

Yes it is, hoping my son can use one of them this year to harvest his own, to make it 4 generations, and the his younger brother or sister when it's their turn. If I'm lucky I might even get out there with my own grandkids someday

I also disagree. Tell your wife that my 8 month old daughter already has her first rifle.

It's pretty neat doing that course along side your son. He'll remember it down the road. My dad never got into guns or hunting, but because I was interested in them he went through both the firearms licence course and the hunter education course with me when I was 17.

The twins have their own .22s. My youngest doesn’t have the maturity set his older brother had at his age, so he still shoots the red rider.

my older son his first time at the range with the old .22

The most valuable-to-me gun I have is worth about $30. A Steven's breakover single shot 20ga - my first gun - my dad bought me for helping him re-roof our house when I was 13. It weighs about 5 lbs and kicks like a mule. I remember the smell of the oil on it when it was new, and the click of the ejector when it's broken over still makes me smile. I'll be glad to see one of my grandkids shooting it.
