Ok...so, I did my first oil change since owning my truck. I understand the oil capacity to be 7.9qts. So, I added a 5 qt container and 2 qts(singles), ran the truck, then checked the oil. Low on the dipstick, so I added 'almost' another full quart. (which should have put me at the full capacity of 7.9 qts), but the dipstick still read low. the truck wasn't on completely level ground, but pretty close.
Look at picture (the 2 red dots are the low and full marks on the dipstick, and the brown dot is where the oil level is reading) of the dipstick and let me know your thoughts. I definitely don't want to overfill the truck, but per the oil capacity, I'm there!

Don’t overthink it, just add another 1/2 quart and good to go.

Let it sit overnight and check it if you want to see it move. Or just add another 1/2 quart...

Have a 4runner and a Tundra. They have to be on a level surface to get a correct reading.

OK....a little update. So, I put it on level ground, checked the level and still 'low'. so, I added 'a little' (up to a total of 8 qts now - remember that the capacity is 7.9 qts). I decided to use my son-in-law's dip stick in my engine (he has a 2008 Tundra 5.7).....well, the dipstick is "different" and when I put it in my engine, it showed full. So, I started doing some research on my dipstick as it shows (0S020) printed on the stick. And sure enough, per Toyota parts websites, the correct part number 'should be' 15301-0S020. So, I think something must be up with mine.....pulled out or something. I'm going to 'modify' it to match my son-in-law's dipstick OR just buy a new one......In my opinion, it could have been bad if I just used the dipstick to 'top-off' the oil level. (would have overfilled the crankcase).
I feel lucky that I went with the 'capacity' rating versus the dipstick in this case.

Our 2010 4runner calls for 6.2 quarts but it takes a full 7 quarts to bring it to the full mark on the stick.

+1. Oil is all over the engine after running it. It will need some time to drip back down to the pan for a proper dipstick measurement. Put in the recommended amount and call it a day.

Please be certain you are filling with the correct oil amount with or without an oil filter change.
