Copied/pasted from LAWeekly- interesting read. I live in Orange County btw

It started in October 1997 in Mexico, when a hurricane fueled by El Niño slammed into Acapulco, causing massive flooding and hundreds of deaths.

A few weeks later, rain started hitting Orange County. Then, in December, in the course of just 24 hours, the skies opened up over Orange County in what meteorologists described then as the wettest, most intense single-day deluge in more than a century.

More than 7 inches fell in parts of south Orange County in one day. Mobile home parks in Huntington Beach flooded. Rescuers were forced to use inflatable boats and a catamaran to scoop up residents. Mudslides destroyed hillside homes. Major roads were made impassable by debris.

And that was just the beginning. El Niño-fueled rains began striking Los Angeles in January and intensified. Over the next few months, a relentless string of storms caused havoc, washing away roads and railroad tracks, overflowing flood control channels, causing 17 deaths and more than half a billion dollars in damage in California. The toll was far worse in Mexico, where Tijuana and other cities faced crippling flooding.

Dude I skate, and I couldn’t get snowboarding down. It’s also fun to spray the down boarders when they decide to sit down on a cat walk( or anywhere for that matter) but you’d like shredding with my buddy, he just goes straight down hahha

The service manager said they are discontinued and no reman options either.

    so, my choices:
    1. Hunt for black or grey and convert my dash to that color
    2. Rip out all the airbag parts and sell, replace wheel for audio controls to my heart’s content, maybe I can pull the lamp on the dash.
    3. Hold out for an ‘02 moon mist passenger airbag

How? Moon mist is rare, though a cover swap may be possible. No new or reman option.

I think I’m leaning towards yanking all bags. How much safety do they add in this truck?

Dual stage would make black easier but would a dual stage airbag system even play nice with my old ECU? Who knows. It’s a gamble.

Can you not just live with the airbag light on or is it actually causing some problem? I've been driving around with my ABS light on for years.

It’s a judgement call on if I want SRS working or not. As to whether or not I take kids with me. I could yank it all and be ok with that. I think they are bulbs too so I might be able to ditch that one bulb. The light bothers me a bit.

I’d be probably remove the control module if I decide to ditch the airbag system. Definitely makes the wheel swap easier. I can buy a black 2 stage bag and use the black wheel. Or jerry rig the cover I have with some sort of bracket to mount it. But if I want a horn I think I need a bag.

I didn’t have the greatest experience with the 4runner air bag recall, maybe I just need to walk in with a Kevin name tag on and raise hell…….

They're offering me free oil changes to go in and do it... that's the last thing I want. Gimme a coupon for parts and then we'll talk.

Dang. If they offered to replace my airbags I'd go in a heartbeat. I'm pretty sure my airbag/seatbelt saved me from serious injury when I was a teenager.

The recall is only on the passenger side, if it were on the driver I'd be more inclined to get it fixed.

The passenger side airbag isn't attached in any way to the dash paneling. So you can use the dash you already have and put a different airbag in. I've taken apart the dash twice. I don't see the problem.

My ebay search comes up blank.

So the cover piece is part of the dash then? That helps some, thanks for the info.

So I'm hunting for a new passenger bag, remove dash, install, replace dash?

The only thing with that plan is my dash has all sorts of gorilla glue on it so replacing it as-is is a little sad but finding a new moon mist dash is like no chance...

The dash comes apart in big chunks. You'll never remove the superglued panel with the airbag markings. You'll have to turn your steering wheel a certain way to later access a screw (Allen?) on the side; then disconnect the battery terminals; remove your steering wheel; then start pulling off nuts to remove components and molding. At some point you'll have loosened the main nuts and most of the dash will come out in one huge chunk with the airbag attached. To get the dash out, you'll have removed the glove compartment and you'll be able to see a nut attaching the passenger airbag up under the dash. I never removed that bolt to take my dash out twice, because I was afraid to disturb that bag. That said, I might have done, except I couldn't get good access to that nut through the access created when I pulled out the glove compartment. In your case, you can either pull the entire dash and then remove that nut (what I would do), or maybe you don't have to pull out the entire dash, but I think you will, to get a new bag in.

Ok. So yours has glue you can see that bugs you-? Nothing involved removing the dash will expose or require glue.

    Anyway, good luck.
