Well I was doing an oil change yesterday and was planning to swap in a Fumoto valve.
Drain went great, no splashing, every drop in the pan.

Using a brass filter drain kept every thing nice and neat. Even used my new thread in funnel. About that time I had a thought could they possibly ship the valve in the open position. Never even considered it. Figured since it was going in after draining the oil it would be shipped closed.

You probably figured out by now, it was open. Climbed under and it was pouring oil. Got it closed empited a bag of absorbent and grabbed some more oil.

    That's funny right there.

All due respect, but isn't there a handle that's either parallel with the valve body or perpendicular to it? Just like any other valve, it's open when the handle is aligned with the valve body..?

I think it locks closed too, no?

I wish I could count on that always being the case. I have received 1/4 turn 1" manual valves at work that had the handle installed wrong. General rule of thumb - yes. But always verify.

I went to a Fumoto valve to be able to shut off the flow. One time, many moons ago I was changing the oil on my Cummins powered truck. I forgot to open the cap to the pan. Yep...3 gallons of soot filled black all over my driveway. A Fumoto valve was ordered that day and every vehicle since has had them installed.

Crap happens. You are definitely not the first or last.

Pro tip - when you can see through it, the valve is open.

I don't need a fancy Fumoto valve to spill hot oil all over my garage floor. :)

I don't get the love for those valves. Is a tried and true, very secure, drain plug really that much trouble for people?

With aftermarket skidplates they make oil changes SO much easier.

My issue with a drain plug is the force of two gallons would cause splatter from the drain pan all over the passenger side tire. Way messier than it needs to be.

I just bought the valve drain hose and safety clips direct. The company forgot to send me the valve and the clips and then sent me the WE FORGOT email. Shame, shame

I’ve changed over 200k miles of oil with mine and love it. I never spill oil… with that part anyway  doing the filter is just a train wreck for me every time!

A design flaw on the RCI skid plate necessitated a Fumoto for me just so it was offset enough not to make a mess at the end of the drain

It wasn't always this way (as us long time Fumoto guys know).

But now when you buy a Fumoto valve these days you get a black plastic "clip" that slides on and over the lil' valve "handle." It will ONLY go on when the valve is closed. Only when closed.

i believe it's sent "open" so that when you put an open ended wrench on it to tighten it up, the lever isn't in the way and having the potential of being bent/broken. sucks for the lesson tho, but better than you trusting it all and driving off with a nice trail of oil following you with a jacked up motor because of it. live and learn. thats what i do....except the learn part.

The angle sideways in the drain hole is just perfect that when it hits the pan it can reflect and spray the brake rotor. That wasn't a fun day. The control of a fumoto or valvomax avoids that.

I've never had this problem using a 5 gal bucket instead of a drain pan. But I fully understand the appeal of the Fumoto.

Hah! I just installed my Fumoto valve on Sunday. My last 2 oil changes prior to that were absolutely miserable. One I didn't realize my oil drain pan was partially full, so that was an adventure in quickly finding another container while the damn thing's draining/spraying all over the inside of my wheel well. The other one's on me - I tried to change the oil outside. One gust of wind after another sent oil spraying in all directions, I have decided not to make THAT particular mistake ever again.

I'm also going to do the Jowett filter housing replacement with the drain valve, just waiting on my order to arrive for my next change in 5k miles. My damn housing drain cap got stuck this change too, ended rigging up my longest socket extension to the oil housing tool and just letting it run down that into the catch pan, and man, that took forever. Ended up having to loosen it while holding the housing in my vice. Didn't take much, but there was no way to reach around my TRD skidplate to get any kind of grip or tool onto the housing to hold it while removing the cap.

I was hard-pressed to spent north of $100 on more oil-change toys that are specific to this one vehicle, but I can sincerely say that I've been totally sold on mess-free methods and tools. It'll still only take 3-4 oil changes to pay for them vs paying labor at my dealership, but still. Ugh. Really, really looking forward to my oil changes being opening and closing a couple drain valves after connecting a couple tubes to my catchcan.

Also side note - the last time I used a Fumoto valve it was on a motorcycle, the bike bottomed out on a short ramp at slightly steep angle onto a trailer, and that damn brass absolutely gave way and leaked my oil all over that trailer (thankfully fully-aluminum floor). I had to drop $200 at a stupid Triumph dealership 1100 miles away from home to get a new drain valve and an oil change so I could get the bike back on the road. These valves are not particularly strong. I was only comfortable going back to using one once I saw just how protected it is by the TRD skidplate.

Definitely. Although I bought one and never installed it. Got the valve and the socket, the whole nine yards.
Brand new sitting on a shelf in my shop. I'd probably sell it but.......

I got burned on PayPal during the onset of Covid so I dumped my account. No more online sales for me and I did a ton of them.
My spouse says Facebook Marketplace is a good way to sell items locally. I'm not a Facer so she'll have to do it.

Anyway back to our original broadcast and yes, score one when you can.

Ironically this thread made me immediately order a Fumoto valve for my Tundra.
