if anyone is wondering about toyota's new D4S injection system (direct/port injection) that toyota introduced back in 2017 here is a nice video from car care nut showing a 80k engine and close ups of the ports.

    starts around the 15min

9:30 mark where he takes a mini camera to the back side of the ports to get close ups

That literally does not say the condition of them. The close ups could reveal a ton of carbon build up or could reveal it being factory fresh.

Thats about what the back side of the valves on my 2014 F150 Ecoboost with 90k miles looked like too. No port injection.

Also, I am pretty sure D4S has been around since like 2007 on the 4.6L V8 in the LS460. The 1UR-FE in the Tundra and GX460 didnt get it but the 1UR-FSE did. So its not exactly new.

My understanding is that the port injection helps with cleaning, but its mainly to increase efficiency at low loads where the cylinder pressures are low enough that direct injection isnt needed. You reduce the power needed for the high pressure fuel pump. it also helps with cold starting. If you look at Ford's tuning on their dual injection system on the 2017+ Ecoboost, it uses almost no direct injection at low rpm and load. And when its in cold mode, it doenst use DI at all below 2500 rpm unless you really get on the throttle.

well im not a technical person, thats why i mentioned that at the 15min mark he takes a camera to look at the port. you can make your own decision from the video. i dont know of they are good, bad, ok or whatever for an engine at 80k miles.

from my perspective, they look good, but the runners look bad if thats what you call them. but thats just me.

the D4S system was introduced earlier than 2017, Its been on the Toyota 86 since that car was introduced in 2012.

Its been generally positive, the port injectors are supposed to help prevent carbon build up on the intake valves, and they work pretty well to reduce emissions and carbon build up!

your timestamp for the video is incorrect, the scope into the head is at the 10 minute mark, not the 15 minute mark.

For those of you that don't want to watch, or don't know what you're looking at, the ports are way cleaner than expected for any vehicle at 80k miles. The video also narrates that.

Yes, though I believe they dropped the part time Atkinson combustion cycle on this turbo motor. My first year gen3 2016 Tacoma had both of these and was flawless thru 110K mi. when sold for the new Tundra.

My understanding is the type 21 version of the V35A doesn't have the intake valve timing adjustment range to achieve true Atkinson cycle mode whereas the type 17 V35A found in the LS500 has a far greater intake timing adjustment range and can achieve Atkinson cycle for efficiency and reduced pumping losses in certain driving conditions
