Alpine ILX-F511. Game Changer

Photos of the new head unit. My factory JBL unit died, and the OEM replacement was more than the Alpine upgrade. Features, controls, pretty much everything about it is incredible. Sound is Alpine quality- always top of the game. I love having the ability to look at the backup cam without having to put the tranny in reverse- sometimes I wanna check my trailer connection while im on the road just for peace of mind.

 

Looks great. Did you self install or have a shop do the work? Wireless Apple CarPlay by any chance?

 

I had a shop do the install. I wouldnt trust myself with this one, tying into steering wheel controls etc. Wireless carplay indeed! Best thing ever.

 

Which app is that last picture?

 

That one is a really cool weather/map combo, called OnTheWay. Shows real time weather overlays on your map and route.

 

Only work with Apple Maps?

 

Looking at crutchfield it says you lose factory Bluetooth, factory Satellite radio, even with best install kit.

did you lose any functionality ??

 

No, all functions work as if from dealer.
Sirius works, bluetooth works beautifully, and pretty much everything else does too. The mic on this head unit is not able to be located where the factory one was, so I do have to see a tiny little mic that was installed on the steering column, but literally no other differences in functionality between this one and factory. I've really enjoyed it with no complaints. Also- for anyone who wants a front facing camera, this has that option. I didnt do one because I dont see a need for one, but if you want one this will do it.

 

@running214 Can you download the Gaia app on this device?

 

You can download it to your phone and then run the app through Apple Carplay or Android Auto.

 

I dont have it installed on mine, but the app does work with Carplay. I dont know if its buggy or not, but it is compatible.

IIRC there was a device that had Gaia app available that was native rather than downloading to your phone for carplay, hence the question.

 

These units only do Apple carplay or android auto. You are unable to install appstore apps. The other devices from overseas run android operating system so you will be able to download apps such as Gaia.

 

Why does the backup camera pic look terrible? It’s in black and white and looks like a weird angle?

The backup photo is not black and white, its color, but it was early in the morning and I have LED license plate lights that are super white so it kind of blows out the picture when its low light outside

 

You can better adjust/lineup the Alpine's reverse cam grid to match up the OEM overlay. It's in the setup menu of the Alpine. FYI mine was off a little and it bothered me until I found that setting and unified the lines. (Those reds should be one line, and the side lines should be together and parallel).

 

How do you access car settings after the installation?

 

Simply through the settings section of the head unit.

 

What did the shop charge for install?

 

The shop I went to was about $150, and I had to buy a pig tail if memory serves me right, all total I believe I was close to 200 for labor and parts.

No all of the head unit settings are on screen via the settings tab

 

Im looking into the same HU.

Do you get to keep the location, speedlimit, compass and whatnot in the gauge/cluster? Mine is 2019 SR5.

 

my truck is a 2014 so I dont have the compass in the gauge cluster, but everything works plug and play. No mods required.

 

Turn your headlights off when going in reverse. It will help substantially with the plate lights not illuminated.

 

I installed a halo 11 and love it
