So my 2020 Tundra has the TRD off road package and the alloy wheels. I've been researching and collecting tools to start doing oil changes and tire rotations myself instead of dealership.

Currently 50K miles, it's had tire rotations every 5K since I bought it new.

Got some Matco 22mm lug sockets and I went to test fit them today and they were super tight on the 2 or 3 I tried. Like I should have to leave the lug nut on the stud a little and move the socket up and down to get it off.

I searched in the forum and it appears that the OEM sockets are 2 piece and can swell? Is this accurate? Also searching I found a couple recommendations for the Gorilla Lug nuts. From what I have read (not as much on here as I had hoped) they are 1 piece designs and won't swell like the OEM ones.

I have no desire to put locking wheel lugs on my truck. Are these Gorilla going to be my best bet?

    Thanks

Yes they can swell. It's just a chrome 'cap' over the lug. Make sure you get the OE 'acorn' style replacement if you choose to go that route

With the alloy TRD off-road wheels shouldn’t I get the Mag type instead of the Acorn type? I thought the Acorn type was for steel wheels ?

When considering Gorilla one piece lugs for my after market wheels (they came on the new Tundra as part of an appearance package) I wanted to be sure of which exact Gorilla lug. I used their on line customer request link. To my complete surprise I got an actual human being. Who worked at Gorilla. And knew his shit. A couple of e-mails later he had me the proper Gorilla part #. Ordered them on line and had them in 3 days. Perfect fit.

    **cough cough** YMMV.

Some OEM Tundra aluminum wheels have acorn style and some have flat washer lug nuts.

My 2 piece petered out after 3 years....

I know they are pricey but I use TRD spline nuts on stock TSS wheels.
    You can find them cheaper.

I'm sure McGard (that probably makes the OEM spline nuts) has a cheaper option.
    Try Gorilla as well.

I can’t imagine that the Matco socket is bad? Why I started looking at the lug nuts

Easy way to check would be to grab the OEM lug wrench from behind the seat.

So this is the socket I bought. It has weird ridges on the flat. Kinda looks defective to me ??

What causes the lug nut to swell like that? Dissimilar metals plus salt water?

A few... Definitely more than 2
Yup pretty much, this is a quick read that basically confirms that... (link)
I have also heard that it becomes more of a problem if you use an impact on your lug nuts since it will flaw the chrome surface and give the water an infiltration point.

Switched to Gorilla after I had a flat, and the swollen nut absolutely ripped apart trying to get the tire off in the middle of nowhere. Took me an hour with a hammer and a screw driver to chisel the cap off and wrench off the rest of the lug nut. Never again.

Yep. Galvanic corrosion could be one factor.

Yeah mine don’t look like that. Looking at my socket it seems to have been machined improperly. I’m working night shift so I’ll check it sometime tomorrow.

    It's a 2 piece nut.
There is a separate outer cover over a steel nut.
The same thing happened to my wife's Lincoln MKC when she had one.
The outside cover gets beat up from taking the lug nuts on and off for changes and rotations..

The outer cap is stainless and resists corrosion. They caps swell from impact guns, guys using SAE “equivalent” or worn out sockets, or not fully seating the socket when turning the lugs.

I had a horrible experience with a tire shop running mine down to over 400 lb ft; ruined all the lugs (some were so so swollen a 23mm socket wouldn’t even fit), warped the rotors, and took me all day to chisel them off. Of course I started working on it at 6pm Saturday evening to replace the rotors that had 3k miles on them, thinking I somehow fubar’d the previous brake install only to discover that my st added breaker bar wouldn’t break the lugs free - assuming I could get purchase on them. I figured they were messed up so I tried all three of my Milwaukee impacts on them; the big gun had troubles breaking any of them free.

    That was at 140k miles.

Ok these are the lug nuts I have on my truck. The pain Husky Deep socket impact fit better than the Matco with the weird ridges on 1/2 the flutes, so I'm sending them back. Only a couple felt a little snug with the Husky.

So If I do want to go with the Gorilla Lugs would These be the right ones??

I experienced this on my previous truck - although I can tell you for a fact that despite being two piece lug nuts, they’re still better than Ford’s.

As such, I second Gorilla lug nuts.
