I have a 2020 1794 model. Is there any way to mute the backup alarm when hitching up a trailer? When I'm hitch up my travel trailer the alarm sounds continuously. On my wife's 2019 Rav4 you can hit the mute button on the steering wheel and it will temporarily mute the object too close alarm - it really is useful in the drive through lane!
    thanks
    Joe

On my 2020 there's a switch under the radio, near the USB ports, that'll disable it.

On the row of buttons in the center console, next to the head unit input USB and charging USB ports, there's a button marked 'P'. You'll have to lean over a little to see if the LED on the button is lit, but turn that off and you should be good to go.

Thank you all very much for the info. As soon as I read the post I went out and yes indeed there is the switch. This will save my sanity next time I hook up to go camping. Great forum!!!

For reference on a 2019 Platinum the parking sensor button is below the dash to the right of the steering wheel. They must have had to relocate it for the push to start in 2020.

I don't know what advantage this gives driver since truck has backup camera. Is it for trailer hookup ease? Also, would it have killed Toyota engineers to provide some LED backlighting on these (almost) hidden switches? I have a small flashlight for that purpose. Kinda like my grandpa had for his 58 chevy.

The sensors in front come in handy though.

It’s helped me out when backing out of a parking spot when pedestrians or a vehicle is passing by. Can’t stare at the camera while backing up the whole time so it’s nice to have an audible alert to compliment.

Is it the same sensors that control the RCTA as the parking assist sonar?

Yep. Just the four sensors across the rear bumper.

No. The four little dot sensors are parking sonar. The RCTA are the BSM sensors that you cannot see inside the rear bumper corners. Completely separate from the parking sensors.

Really? I had no idea there were sensors in the rear bumper. I also have never taken off my bumper so there’s that lol

Yup. That's why BSM is only available with color matched rear bumper caps. It can't see through the metal on the chrome ones. That is also why BSM doesn't worth with 99.9% of aftermarket rear bumpers. The BSM/RCTA sensor looks like this. (Pic from a tacoma, but concept is the same)

That’s wild. I guess I just assumed the parking sonar and bsm/rcta was all the same system. That’s why I love this forum. Thanks for explaining!

I learned it here, too! If you really want wild, go look at @RainMan_PNW 's install guide for a truck that doesn't have it from the factory. :goingcrazy:

    Shit
    BSM/RCTA install was easy.
Adding the parking sonar was what proved to be a real bitch… required a different instrument cluster, an extra ECU, the switch, drilling holes in bumpers, etc.

but yes, two completely different systems that operate with different technology and methods. The parking sensors are low-range sonar that projects straight out from the sensors and are triggered when in drive or reverse below certain speeds. They are wired in series and communicate over a dedicated system with their own ECU and that provides data directly to the instrument cluster (that has to have the correct hardware to display it). The BSM units are radar with different modes (one with a narrow angle and long range for the RCTA sensing, and the other short range wide angle for BSM). They communicate over CANBUS to the main ECU and are integrated into the basic information cluster system (2018+).

My parking sensor switch is lit but I can not see it from my driving position. I have to lean over quite a bit to see if it is lit.

HA! I had wondered why I have a color matched rear, and all that hideous chrome up front.
