Hello. New to the forum. Currently drive a 2019 Ram 1500 limited. Probably pulling the trigger on a new Tundra in next few months. Any insight on the impact of the air dam on highway driving, vehicle stability, fuel efficiency?
I have seen the link about what Mike Sweers said about it. I’m more wondering about driving experience of with or without in this forum.
    Thank you

If you get any of the TRD OR packages, the air dam function isn’t there. I have a truck with the TRD OR so I can’t compare, but my guess is that the savings are all but negligent on an individual truck (same as start/stop), but collectively in a manufactured fleet there is some savings which they need to hit CAFE. I regularly get over 20 on the hiway so I am happy with that.

I'm sure it has an effect. FYI it's not even installed on Canadian models, I'm sure this is due to ice buildup but I have no complaints without it :)

I have the air dam and never notice it while driving. It activates after you go 35mph+ (i think) and retracts when below. I have never had an issue with the mechanicals of it, even after a rough MN winter.

As for MPG, i average 23 on highways, and 15 in city. My 30min, 20 mile commute to work every day gets me 21 mpg without traffic, and 19 with some traffic on the way home.

I am a stock truck person, so i cannot speak to modifying the front end and what that would do to the dam. Im guessing it would throw codes all over unless you bypassed it :notsure:

I cannot compare the Tundra with/without it, but my Tacoma had one which was removable. I tried driving without it and it was very noticeable. My '23 TRD Sport has it, and highway driving is incredibly smooth. Presumably there is a noticeable difference with/without it on the Tundras as well.

Seems like most trucks I see have one. I think the Tundra looks goofy when it’s down but I can’t see that from the drivers seat. I think Toyota did an amazing job by having it fold up and down on its own. With that said, my truck drives awesome on the highway and my gas mileage is totally fine. I’m glad I have it when I’m on the highway and I’m glad you can’t see it when I’m parked.

Yes including trucks up to F600's. Which tells me they are probably not just about appeasing the EPA, although that is probably one benefit.

as i previously posted in another thread, air dams are for the company benefit, not yours.

air dams raise the cafe standard for the company up to 1 mpg at best case scenario. when a company is spending hundreds of thousand dollars to even raise the cafe by .1 mpg, it makes a big difference by volume sold.

dont ever think its for your benefit.

Interesting...perhaps the TRD OFF-RD just doesn't have it? I noticed in your avatar you're rocking a sport.

Then why did Ford put them on superdutys that have no mpg targets?

if I had to guess it’s because of cooling which is beneficial to me

In Canada when equipped with TRD Off Road package the active front spoiler is removed (see below under Optional Features, 5th line from the bottom). That is quite acceptable to me, just another item to screw up or fix if it gets whacked.

Not entirely true. Maybe it’s a region thing? My 2022 Limited TRD OR DOES indeed have the air damn(USA). I have to drop it each time I replace my oil, which is easy.

because it still impacts the cafe for the manufacturer overall. you can apply credits earned on very fuel efficent vehicles to the gas guzzlers and it also applies to those vehicles that dont contribute to the manufacturers overall cafe requirements.

why do you think telsa made bank selling credits to everyone.

From 19 to 20mpg, that 5%. At 100,000 miles @ $3/gal its $800, at $4 is a grand, explain to me how that doesn't benefit me.
I would be shocked if that air damn is good for 1 mpg better fuel economy, but the net benefit of all the tweaks certainly does benefit me. My 2016 got 28% worse fuel mileage, and over the life of the truck that is sizeable chunk of change. Doesn't bother me in the least that they are doing to benefit themselves because it benefits me.

We would all be getting 7 or 8 mpg if car manufactures weren't incentivized to reduce fuel consumption.

You are correct about the TRD Off Road offerings. It also baffles me why Toyota USA has many more option packages to configure their trucks than we do here in Canada. You would think keeping things the same would be more cost effective from a global perspective. I am sure more Canadian's would pick up more of these packages if they could.

I'm doing something wrong. I get 13.1 on a good week driving in city for 23 minutes and 14 miles. I have never seen 16 MPG on any trip. I have a 2017 Crew Cab.

I think that probably has more to do with the Canadian government than the US. Right now in BC if I sell you a used Corolla, say for $10,000 the Province gets to dictate the price ( they say its worth $15000 ) and charge you tax at thier chosen price rate. I cant give you a deal. Welcome to the NDP

    Too controlling.

My son bagged and slammed a Lexus and we took all sorts of parts off it ( front and rear clip as an example) and turfed them and replaced them US parts because of the Canadian crash bars required.

Possibly, but with today's production line technology where they can pump out a vehicle in less than a minute let the customer decide what he wants if you giving all these possible options. I guess that's what it feels like when you are considered a minority.

We can still gift in BC as we just gifted the twins their cars before the NDP slam that loop hole and tax you 2 times on the same car purchase.

So F'King stupid......but I feel your pain. I wont even sell a car in BC anymore, sell it in Alberta just to F'K BC out of the tax dollars they are boning us on.

Well kind of a mystery, I don’t have one - SR5 TRD OR. I got most of my info here https://www.tundras.com/threads/no-active-airdam-on-2023-1794-hybrid-with-trd-or.116646/ but obviously it seems that only Toyota knows who has them and who doesn’t. Maybe it’s an SR/SR5 thing?

i was referencing the govt upcharge on taxes that hellakrusty posted (see above) saying the value of the vehicle is what they think not what its sold as.

thats sorta of a govt madated adm that is sorta like the usa dealers doing adm.
