I recently replaced both rear axles on my 2016 DC 5.7L with tow package (99500 miles). I bought it used from a dealer so I don't know what the last guy hauled, but most of the 15k miles I've put on it are from towing a 6000lbs travel trailer. The driver side bearing was trashed and the inner seal on the pass side was leaking.

I went with the Dorman "drop in" axles because all I could find were hub assemblies for almost the same price. For those keeping score at home I did buy Toyota inner seals and O-rings.

A neighbor keeps telling me his son in law replaces just the rear bearing and reuses the hub on the same year Tundra "all the time at work". Which is all well and good but A - I can't find just the bearing online and B - he never seems to remember to ask SIL where to buy just the bearing, or what the part number is (i.e. I'm suspicious of my neighbor's claim)

Am I missing something in my google search? Can we replace just the bearing in a 2016 rear axle?

[Edited to clarify that I can find the hub assembly online but cannot find the bearing outside of the hub assembly]

Have you asked the dealer part department? I don’t see why they wouldn’t sell just the bearings. But I have seen weirder things. Also the OEM bearing should have a number and easy to find if you get that number.

I haven't called around, but the exploded diagram for the rear axle only shows the hub assembly, plus seals and retaining clips

Now I see what you mean. I have never done rear bearings on a Tundra so that why I found it strange. Normally the bearing is in the diff. The Tundra uses a bearing assembly. Either way there has to be a number on the bearing but the issue is getting that number.

Most vehicles no longer have “just the bearing”. They have a bolt in bearing and hub assembly that simplifies the process. Your neighbor could just be FOS. I wish my 2000 Tundra had front hub/bearing assemblies. Instead I have to find a 50 ton press and go through the nightmare that is pressing all the various parts of the bearing in and out.

I also vote FOS buuuuuut figured I'd ask since I wasn't seeing anything like that at all. I think I much prefer the hub assembly to what I've seen on YouTube.

Like I said, the bearing could be found, but you need the number that’s in it. If you look at rockauto, in some pics you can see a manuf number. With that number you can buy just the bearing. I work in an industrial plant and we order bearing all the time for equipment. The bearing in the hub assy is available out there, you just need the number. But after seeing the price, I don’t see a big saving there. You have to pay someone to remove and install the bearing. You need a press for that. Me personally, avoid the headache and buy the assy.

Also rockauto has some good manuf for those assy, so you could go that route to save some. OEM will have one of those bearing manuf on rockauto. SKF,Timken, Kojo, etc.

They have a manual 50 ton press for more like $300. Waiting for it to go on sale. And offer a coupon.
