Bought the MX4 with my truck from my dealer Uninstalled because he beat any online price and I wanted to install it correctly myself. Awesome hardware. Incredible fit, finish, and design. I’m really happy with the attention to detail on the seals. We get 45” of rain avg. so the seal will be important. Hasn’t rained in 3 weeks but one will come hopefully soon (I may turn the hose on it first) One reason I chose the MX4 is because it lets you keep the OEM sliding tie down rails and cleats which you can leave in place with the cover closed. Can travel 2/3 open with the built in tie down buckles or fully open with the kick stands and attached big foam blocks to protect the cab. The bed and rear view cameras from the rooftop can see right over it when tilted up. *Added bonus- made my bed perfectly quiet with the back window down. 5yr warranty too -(Better than others I looked at)IMG_2124.jpgIMG_2123.jpgIMG_2122.jpgIMG_2130.jpgIMG_2129.jpgIMG_2125.jpg

Make sure you tighten down the prop rods well when you drive with it flipped up. Mine slipped and flapped around on the 405 freeway in traffic.

Didn't know I had to really gorilla those supports on.

    Still love my bakflip though!

Thats because it’s made by Real Truck. The same Co that made the OEM one for Tundra. They make almost all the top bed cover brands incl BAK, Gator, UnderCover, Truxedo, TonnoPro, Retrax, Extang and others. There’s no way this cover is coming off. I wish I could see what the OEM cover used.

Thx. I was wondering how they will do. Need to test that out.

Would you mind sharing a picture of one of the front corner mounts underneath? I’m curious what was different on the OEM

I can answer what it is that you don't see, the bolts for the cover have a locking washer in them which I have to use a flathead screw driver to hold it place to unscrew the bolt so you can remove them. They are very secure

Hella Krusty, thanks for the pics. I’m laughing because it’s the identical hardware on the MX4 and other models I’ve seen. (Tracks, slotted flange and drains) I’d love to hear from someone who had the OEM cover fly off. What actually let go? Did the knobs just back off and unscrew? Mine are very tight and have a lock washer. I’ll keep an eye on them though regularly and see if they loosen at all.

Knobs backed off. There was a few owners in another thread said after it flew off the nuts were laying in the box.. Mine were loose when I checked them. I put Loktite on them so they cant loosen off

It is not going to come off if you put the washers in the correct order and use the locking nut. You could turn it unlimited times and it will not loosen off the cover bolts. Blue locktite isn't going to do anything anyway. If you are really worried about it use Red, doubt you all plan to remove the cover anyway.

Agree. It’s not going anywhere tightened against the lock washer. I never use Red LT. I use Blue all over my single cyl motorcycle that’s famous for throwing bolts and works great. Want to be able to easily remove. Often I just put a dab of silicone at the end of the bolt threads if I don’t want something to vibrate off.

Over the years on my G2 those knobs became very hard to tighten even though always installed with correct hardware. I think repeated tightening made small dents in that area of the panel. Me over tightening was probably a culprit. Made it difficult for the hardware on top to bite in like it was supposed to. No idea if that is the broader problem with the ones that fly off but I know it was an issue with mine. The knobs never came off but in the end they wouldn't quite fully tighten anymore. Probably would have eventually come off if I didn't periodically check them and/or loctite them.

    Yep, loving my MX4.

I've almost always run toppers on my trucks before this, but was getting tired of crawling around in there and I don't need to truck camp anymore since I got soft and bought a travel trailer. Really nice having easier bed access but still with some security for my surfboards and stuff.

Recently added the bedrug to make it all cushy. :bananadance:

Thanks for the MX4 review btw! I just got my Tundra and am looking for a cover that allows full bed access, is secure, PNW weather proof(ish), doesn't block rear cameras (for digital rear view mirror), and can support bed rack in the future - seems like this checks all boxes!

It appears you lose the bed rail function with the movable tie downs when you install the MX4, is this correct?

Bak relocates the rails about an inch lower than factory. Both the rails and cleats are still usable. It's really a good design. The original bak covers on tacomas roughly 10 or so years ago did lose the rails, but not anymore.

Exactly right. Many other tri-folds ditch your factory rails.

All the rails are the same amount all the BAK optioned covers, I have the F1 and used standard torque wrench set to install it. The hardest part is making sure the rubber seals don't tuck underneath rails. I found this easier with hand tools. The bed rails relocate to underneath the main rails and allow you to use the factory tie downs.

I'd say no harder than installing the BAK itself really... You may or may not have to use the thinner weatherstripping that comes with the Elevate TS rails to compensate for the additional thickness of the TS rail.

Only a trifold that sits on top of the bed’s edges would leave the oem slide rails in place. It may even mount to them. My Tacomas OEM trifold is like that. Sits on top of the bed and locks onto pegs above the slide rails. Not as waterproof and not near as good looking as an inset flush cover. The only benefit is that sitting on top it doesn’t reduce the height inside the bed when covered. That just barely lets me close the cover on top of 5 ga water bottles in the Taco

Does the factory cover fit with factory slide rails or do you loose the rails with factory cover? I haven’t been able to find one to inspect yet.

Edit: Just found video of install for oem cover. Slide rails get lowered during install of OEM cover. Thanks for feedback, I understand now.
