Picked up a used Benchmade Phaeton

def has much more noticeable blade play than the Infidel I picked up. Just did a google search and it looks like even new these blades are like that. I still like it though and it seems to be a little snappier and lighter than the Infidel

    This also just showed up.

    IMG_1814.jpg IMG_1815.jpg

Read decent reviews that for $40 they’re worth it for a beater knife, so figured I’d try one out

It doesn’t seem to be as sharp as the BM, but the blade play is about the same if not a little less. It’s also just as snappy as the BM

Lightning, seems like there’s 2 models and original and a slightly more expensive elite. I read some reviews that people preferred the original over the newer elite

Most all otf will have blade play. It’s kind of to be expected with that style knife. If you want a completely solid otf check out deadlock they have build a reputation for no blade play but you will pay a pretty penny for that. Even my 800 microtechs have some degree of blade play.

Oh yea I know. But my infidel feels pretty solid and I have to use my fingers to feel for the blade play, whereas the phaeton if I shake it I can hear it rattle and it just feels much looser than the infidel I have

and I think I’ll take the blade play before spending $1500+ on a hawk deadlock! I don’t have that kinda money for a novelty item lol

Yeah I checked out some Hawks at the blade show. They’re amazing but at that price I wouldn’t even want to use it so it’d be worthless.

Out the side autos are much better in my opinion. More solid, generally much cheaper, and blade selection is better on them. You can get a Pro-Tech TR3 for under 200 bucks and use it daily for the rest of your life.
Only advantage an OTF has is that you can open and close it one handed.

I got this Pro-Tech Magic 2 the other day and it could easily be the only knife I would ever need.

I'll brag on my Heretic a little. It wiggles less than .5mm. It was in the $300 range. Plus, it fell into salt water (drunk accident) and they fully cleaned and sharpened it without blinking (or charging me - even shipping).

Ahhh - - I suppose I could have googled the knife before I commented. Nice.

In a more aggressive use case, is that lock going to slip?

Good question. Could see that pushing hard while cutting could disengage it if you aren’t careful, but the force wouldn’t be in the direction that would cause the blade to close. I’m pretty sure you’d have be trying to make it into an issue.

I suppose any folder carries the same risk.

Now I have a new knife on my list (the BR-1... That Magic 2 is pretty big). Thanks. About to buy a Sebenza, so if there's a Seattle street I need to camp on with the rest of the junkies, I suppose I'll start walking that way.

Yes. I tried to like a ZT 0707 I bought from KSF, but I just couldn't. Sending it back and spending that much more on a small Sebenza. I don't hate knives longer than 3.5" or so, but I much prefer them smaller. I thought about one of the ones with inlays in the scales, but polished Micarta is just as slick as anything, and I want something more grippy. I'm told the bead-blasted titanium scales on the Sebenza do the trick (probably should have asked here first...).

Have you adjusted yours to be 'flickable' (or did you even need to)?

Strangely ZT is one of the brands I’ve never tried. They just don’t appeal to me.
I haven’t adjusted mine, and they’re definitely not flickable. I just accept that it’s a slow opener and I don’t mind.

After carrying a Benchmade Griptilian for many, many years, I finally made the switch to a fixed blade. It simply fits my needs better, and I’d rather carry on my belt than in a pocket.

Here’s my current EDC, which I carry scout-style in the small of my back. It’s a White River Model 1 with natural burlap micarta handles. I never even notice it’s there. It has been the best EDC knife I have carried in over 40 years of caring a knife.

Just for fun, here are a few handmade customs I had made by a friend. All were made by the same person, all from antique sawmill blades.

I’ve carried this knife on every hunting trip over the past 15 years, and have used it to dress quite a few animals. It has certainly served me well.
    IMG_1220.jpg

This little neck knife has been very handy for hiking, camping, and all kinds of other outings.
    IMG_1222.jpg

And this is a matched pair I had made for Christmas gifts for my father and son about 15 years ago. I have my son’s at home while he’s off serving in the US Navy, and my father no longer hunts due to age.
