The difference is that you have to pay to update the nav in those older vehicles. You have to buy the update from the dealer in an SD card. Otherwise, your maps are never updated.

The subscription you’re paying on the newer vehicles is continually updated.

A quick Google search show multiple examples of S23/Android Auto/Google Maps compatibility problems. One fix you might try is launch Google maps on your phone before you plug your phone into your truck. I'm reading that works for some people. Here's some reading for you.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidAuto/comments/wqdw9d/google_maps_not_showing_up_on_android_auto/

    Good luck.

I hear you, but....I drove my 2015 for 8 years and 150K miles, all over the country, and never updated the NAV. I can only think of a few times when that presented only minor navigation problems.

I suppose if I delivered pizzas for a living, having the latest NAV update would be important to me.

I'm really not picking a fight but real time nav has turned out to be a huge win for me. It's not the streets and location so much but it's all about real time traffic visibility. As roads have become worse and traffic greater I use it all the time. The voice command SW that actually works now makes it very easy to use. I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago and it was a lifesaver navigating the mess that is the Northeast. I was rerouted probably 10 times between NC and New York and who knows how many hours it saved.

    Glad to help.

I think the problem is the S23 has a built in power saving mode that automatically disables Google Maps from Android Auto when you aren't using Maps. Launching Maps before connecting to your truck solves that problem.

After using GPS in a vehicle for over 15 years without paying any subscription fee I would be surprised. Our 2020 ES doesn't require a fee to use the GPS.

my old 7in garmin works way better than any oem. added benefit is i can use it while driving unlike the oem that pretty much locks out the most useful features while driving.

IMO subscription is pure greed. Garmin doesn’t make you pay, and that’s their whole business. If they can stay profitable welling hardware then Toyota can too.

agreed garmin is better than OEM navigation (at least the ones I’ve used).

The built in nav, where I live, is useless. There are entire subdivisions where my patents live that are not on the Toyota maps. Those subdivisions have been there for at least 50 years, so it's not like they are so new as to not be in the nav. This has been the case with EVERY built in nav system in the vehicles my dad has owned as well. I know this will not be the experience of every user as most ppl don't live as rural as we do out here, but for me, all built IN nav systems are worthless. Google maps FTW.

I agree. Google Maps in satellite mode is amazing, especially on a 14" screen. I think its live traffic data is better than most other navigation apps, as well.

On our recent long road trip, my wife and I were comparing Google Maps and Apple Maps. Google Maps consistently picked better routes and had more accurate live traffic data.

I guess you’ve never updated the maps in your Garmin? They absolutely do make you pay.

Not for nothing, I wouldnt pay a dime for the connected services until you get the second key fob from Toyota.
If you lose the only key you have, without the connected services you wouldnt be able to even unlock the doors from the toyota cell phone app.

I hit my year and let the subscription lapse out of principle.

I'm more shocked that nobody from Toyota has bothered to call trying to convince me to cough up the money!

No they don't. Lifetime maps(included in price of unit). Also includes traffic. First ones used to charge for dvd.

The plus side of XM's persistence is you can always use those calls to negotiate discounts

They don't have much for my music taste. Also I hate subscriptions. As much as I like beer, I don't have any craft beer subscriptions. If I like it, I buy it and fully own it.

Overdrive will become an option for a monthly fee. Power steering and A/C to follow. Where will it end???

Some manufacturers have announced they are going to pull Apple/Google in future models. I think GM is one of them. (forcing the subscription model)

Yes, if you pay the premium price for the unit that includes lifetime maps. I haven’t looked at them in years, but it was a rather expensive upcharge when I bought one probably 7-8 years ago.

And if you don’t think the price of that lifetime map update subscription isn’t included in the price of the unit, you’re only fooling yourself.

The map supplied is great and all showing me where every Toyota Stealership is and other goodies, but once my phone is tethered it's all Waze 100%.

My Tacoma OEM Nav works great. No subscription needed. My choice to update the map chip when I decide to pay for an upgrade. I don’t need real-time map updates. This is just the new world of subscriptions for everything going forward. Easy money for Companies.
