We have a wood front exterior door. Wood doors look great, but that is all it's good for in my area. The door does get direct sunlight until around noon and snow has been half way up the door a "few" times.

This is what needs to be replaced:

Measurements are: 72" wide x 95" tall. Door is 42"x 80". Top portion is 72x14.

Our first attempt at pricing was Home Depot. I know...we were just there and wanted to see options. 12,500.00 later plus install we are looking for other options.

By going double doors the cost is dropped almost by half and still gives us a large entryway and we lose the sidelights which I like for security reasons.

Now this morning I priced a 72"x80" door without the top light for this:

    IMG_1600.jpg

I can only assume the top part of the door is totally jacking up the price here. I could totally frame that in, and stone the portion on the exterior. I know a guy :D.

We will be also discussing options with Anderson and Pella for sure.

Sweet Jesus that price. Would it be cheaper to add an overhang above the door? The doors condition doesn't look to bad. Can it be refurbished?

I think the guy just totally screwed up the sizing and cost.

I have a patio over the front that hangs 10' over. The door is just weathered so bad.

Can you just replace the slab or are you dead set on the whole thing?

When I needed to replace my door a couple years ago...I paid less than $500 for the door itself to match my existing opening

Then had a buddy fit it and the hinges into my existing framework

    Way cheaper than 12k

Oh and I made the dog pay for it

I'm figuring even custom sizing it shouldn't be too bad for the slab

I’ll just buy a single pre hung and frame it out and put some wood siding around stain it and call it good or you could drop 15k for a door like this

I had Andersen come out a couple days ago to replace 22 of my windows. While they were here I asked them to price a new front door.

    IMG_2432.jpg

Of course this is not installed price....and the wrong size. We have a 42" door.

We are seriously considering framing in the sidelite's and rocking over that portion. Then going with a high quality 42" door and being done with these costs.

Renewal by Andersen is a rip off, the door is not an Andersen product, it’s a Provia door.

Way too much money for what you get, a window made of sawdust and vinyl mixed together and a vinyl cap-stock applied. Poor color retention with the vinyl and very brittle.

The Andersen rep flat out said it's a door made by the Amish, but the highest quality on the market.

    Any suggestions?

Experience with Andersen Windows? From what I hear, the composite is very hard to beat especially in our weather patterns.

Likes and dislikes? How long have you had this door?

The rep said we can get the cost down to under 10k. The one I posted was their top model.

I think they are Mennonite but it doesn’t matter they are very close.

Good products but very overpriced. Your can find a quality Therma Tru unit for half price depending on the contractor.

Again, Fiberex is nothing special, sawdust and vinyl mixed together, just Andersen’s exclusive design. You can probably get Andersen 400 series windows cheaper and have a much better product. Just make sure they do full frame replacement, not insert application.

Higher quality windows would be Marvin, Kolbe or Loewen. Stay away from Pella they are crap now.

I have Kolbe now and personally, not impressed for a variety of reasons.

I'll check out the Marvin and Loewen windows and Therma Tru doors. Thanks for the suggestions.

You might also look at Sierra Pacific H3, it’s a hybrid window, extruded heavy clad exterior, vinyl main frame and solid wood interior. Make sure if you are going to use a dark exterior color upgrade to the AAMA 2605 paint.

Is this what you do for a living? Thank you for all the advice and options. Exactly what I am looking for.

In your opinion, is Anderson what I am looking for?

So a little background. I live at 7600' of elevation and have some pretty extreme weather swings. I was told the wood windows with medal clad just doesn't work with the temp swings.

Yes, I have sold windows and doors since 1987.

I am an old wood window guy and have see most of them and have seen vinyl become the dominate window. Not because they are the best but because they are the cheapest.

All of the quality wood window companies in the US are located in the Northern part of the country and are tested in extreme cold conditions.

Over 5,500 > you will not have argon filled units because of breather tubes to equalize the pressure at elevation. No argon is not a bad thing most commercial units are produced with air fill.

Vinyl at extreme cold conditions is going to get brittle, the way aluminum cladding it is applied to the sash it should not conduct, or greatly reduce conduction, to the interior. It all is really dependent on the glass and perimeter spacer that is used.

I have done several projects in the mountains over the years but I am far from being an expert at elevation. You would best best served to go to Denver or Colorado Springs and see the products in a showroom and do your own evaluation.

By the way, Yes Andersen is a quality product and a first class company, I am just not a fan of their Renewal division which is just a franchise deal set up with high pressure sleazy vinyl window companies in the various markets markets around the country. Look at their 400 Series line of casements, wood window with a shrink wrapped vinyl covering. It is a proven product been in production for well over 50 years.

Again it’s best you go see them and come to your own conclusion.

Great information. Therma Tur Doors is actually located in northern Colorado (Lafayette) and have some really nice doors. Thanks for that recommendation. They have vented sidelites. How cool.

Marvin does not have a dealer anywhere close. They also have a really nice layout, but I need service (discuss more on this in a min).

Sierra Pacific is actually in Colorado Springs. That works well.

Loewen is in Denver and that is a quick 30 min drive.

So here is the deal. My Kolbe windows look amazing. However, getting someone to come out and service them is impossible. A couple windows need new seals and most of my windows have delaminated from the aluminum cladding. So I had to caulk all the bottoms of the windows and the first 4" from the bottom up to seal. That looks amazing . I did get one guy that sort of contracts for Kolbe come out a couple years ago and never got back with me on fixing the issue (which was under warranty and only 6 years old at the time). This frustrates me to no end. Customer service is a high priority for most aspects of my life. I would even take a lesser product knowing they will answer the phone.

I understand customer service and it just kills be to hear stories about dealers blowing people off. For years aluminum clad companies designed windows to be able to replace the glass (reglaze) in case of seal failure or glass breakage. Well they all found out it is impossible to keep the water out from behind the cladding onto the wood if you are going to try and reglaze. Most companies have now changed the design of the window sash and they are permanently sealed. If the glass breaks or fails it is a full sash replacement. Stay away from brand P they still use the same re-cladding design from the 90’s, they use cheap thin aluminum exterior roll formed cladding with an inferior silicone polyester paint AAMA2603 that fades terribly. Their products are poor quality and not durable over the long run. Big name poor performance.

On your entry door, you will get the best and longest lasting finish if you paint the exterior and paint or stain the interior. Stain on the exterior is just a continual maintenance item. That applies to a wood door or textured fiberglass.

Man I’d just caulk, fill and paint the wood unless you really want to spend big bucks/change the style.

Sorry for the craptastic pics, but these are the best pics of my Kolbe windows that I have on my phone.

This is from the back. As you can see I have windows everywhere and it's like this around the house.

How would you paint this door? Sand, wood fill damaged areas, and use a certain stain like I have on a lot of other wood around the house? I have heard using Spar Urethane is a good.

This! If this is truly solid wood it’s easy! Sand down, fill, sand down! Then you have your choice either stain it or paint it.
You can go down to your local Sherwin Williams or whatever is local paint store and talk to the pros.
Or find a pro to do it for you, $1500-2500 maybe. But I would definitely think twice before removing them.
