I know I'll be in the minority here, but it's not really that crazy when you look at worker productivity vs pay over the last ~50 years. I imagine people were saying the same thing back in 1938 when they transitioned from a 6 day work week to a 5 day one.

Companies are more than happy to exploit their workers as much as they can. Good on these workers for fighting to get a larger slice of the pie.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
He just referenced it twice in this thread, or maybe I am imagining words that I see on the screen.

Maybe you perceived it in the wrong way, idk. I dont think he meant it that way.

    /back on topic

Wonder how long this strike will last? $500 a week will get old for some of these picketers.

Probably why the Police Act of 1919 came about. (I didn't know that. Learn something new every day)

Then again, nothing stopping good officers from turning over their badges either. Happens way more often than I would like.

I dealt with a strike for over 4 years before leaving my position. The strike ended up lasting 7 years. Lots of money lost and bank accounts drained to win penny's.

I'd join you if I drank. I'm in the middle of my 7 days off. My benefits suck, but the pay is good (better before recent inflationary events) and I like time off.

Here in TX, if you decide to teach after you've been working in anything other than teaching, you lose half or more of the SS money you paid in....

We pay into a fund just for educators and that's our retirement. In order to retire at 100% many teachers have to put in almost 40 years though.

Whatever this forum told me to do
If I had my druthers, I’d strip the administration side of school districts and give the teachers all that money.

When TEA took over HISD not long ago, the "manager" Superintendent canned a bunch of district administrators and gave that pool of money to every teacher working on the campuses they're targeting for major growth.

This isn’t the early 20th century anymore. Union members aren’t out there beating up scabs any longer. The idea of a labor strike just doesn’t have the long term power it once did. Additionally, because of modern technology, companies can more easily move operations to other states/nations, and new labor can more rapidly be recruited. The UAW rose to power at a time before automation. When nowhere else in the world could compete with Detroit. The world is a different place now.

dont forget. When the automakers lost money. They went to uncle sam for a handout. Can the uaw members compete with that? I think not

Residency requirement? We have that here for Boston cops; 3 year residency requirement for the job.

I personally know of two young guys (cops) who are still living in their Parent’s house because they cant afford a Boston city apartment or condo.

everyone blaming workers as being greedy & entitled are totally ok with corporations raising msrp by 30-40% over the last 5 years, ripping customers off with high interest rates, screwing them on their trade ins, allowing their dealers to add market adjustment of 10k-30k on top of already high msrp, and forcing crappy twin turbo engines that won’t last with horrible overall build quality.

We need a total boycott to go along with strike on all these giant corporations who do nothing but rip off their customers & workers.
Toyota has become another pos company just like the other 3.

Now watch dealers take advantage of strike & price gouge consumers even more, but the corporate bootlickers will say free market.
    F’ing morons

All of those points are 100% true as well.

organized labor is part of the reason we have the political decisions that caused all this inflation unfortunately.

plenty of blame on both sides. The corporations are horrible, the union leadership is horrible. The ruling class in America only cares about wealth, they don’t just have no care for the working class, they actually have contempt for us.

i just think realistically, asking for a 40% raise in the face of deep deep recession is probably a bad move. Seems unrealistic

Teachers are happy when we get a 3% raise. I read that Ford offered them 20% and they laughed at it.

Working 32 hrs and getting paid for 40 is nonsense.
You want a shorter work week? Set daily or weekly production goals. You get paid for 40 hrs. If you get it done in 32, go home early.
An example is the city sanitation workers. The city wants them out there early and off the streets asap. Here's your work for the day. It's 8 hrs worth of work. You get paid for 8 hours. If you hussle and get it done in 6, great. 4? Even better.
But to just get paid for an entire 8hr day when you're not even there? For line work?
I don't care how much money the employer makes, how do you come up with getting paid for not working? It's ridiculous.
