Series 100 LC snorkel on a FGT

At the request of @KNABORES (for future forum searches), this thread will document my install of a cheap eBay snorkel designed for the Series 100 Land Cruiser on to a FGT.

Now, because this snorkel is not necessarily designed for our trucks, there is not a template or an easy way to tell you how to do this. You have to eyeball it, pick a line and commit.


Step number one is going to be remove the factory airbox assembly (both clam shells) and remove the right front inner fender liner. In my case I also had to remove the right front wheel arch molding. After all of that is out-of-the-way, you can access inside the right front fender.


Next, you will take the rubber snorkel hose that connects the OEM airbox (lower clam shell) to the snorkel assembly and place it inside the fender. Because the factory air box draws air from inside the fender, the airbox itself has an inlet that protrudes through the inner fender well and makes a 90° turn towards the rear of the vehicle. After the rubber “inside the fender tube” is in place, you can then reinstall the factory airbox bottom clam shell by pushing the air box inlet into the rubber tube and then tighten the hose clamp from inside the fender.


At this point you will have a really good idea about where you’re going to make the 4 1/2 inch hole in the fender to attach that rubber hose to the snorkel assembly.


Next comes the point of no return. You now have to commit to cutting a 4 1/2 inch hole onto your fender or put everything back to stock.

Take a shot of whiskey and send it.

I’ve seen people use a carbide holesaw to make this cut. I’m pretty sure that’s the best route to go. I don’t have a holesaw of that size nor was I going to take a trip to the home improvement store to purchase one ($45). Instead, I put a carbide blade into my jigsaw, drilled a starting hole and sent it.


With the inlet hole now cut into the fender, you can hold your snorkel up with the template and gauge where the mounting holes need to be.


I used a 3/8 drill bit for these holes.


Next I mocked up the snorkel again, just to make sure that that’s exactly where I want it.


After that, attach the washers and locknuts to the studs on the backside of the fender. Tighten down with a 13mm wrench. Attach the inner hose to the snorkel assembly and tighten down the hose clamp.

Reinstall the inner fender liner, wheel arch molding and airbox upper clam shell assembly.

Take another shot of whiskey, sit back and bask in the beauty of what you’ve just accomplished.


I took her for a hot lap to see how she acts. There is very minimal blockage for driver visibility.


Being that this is a “true” cool air intake, there is a very minute yet positive increase in throttle response. Only time will tell if I actually have to replace the air filter more often than the OEM setup.

In the future, I will probably take a heat gun to the snorkel neck and try to massage it closer to the A pillar without compromising the right side door. For now, it’s sturdy and functional.

I did forget one very important step. You HAVE to remove the antenna. The snorkel is NOT going to work with the antenna in place. I have purchased a marine/RV AM/FM antenna and a mount that I plan to install somewhere in or around the bed when it arrives.

 

Does the 100 have an a pillar mount? Do you plan on using it if so?

 

It does but it’s not going to be functional. It would require a custom fabricated mount if you were to go that route.

 

At 60$ I’m half tempted to buy that kit only to use the inner fender tube and get a stainless pillar tube made……

I grew up watching Tim the Toolman Taylor, so I’m kinda a fan of Binford5000-ing lots of stuff I own. It would be a one off custom for sure.

 

Or just tape up the hole and you have a great way to tighten your antenna! Great post, BM.

 

So the wife went to Six Flags yesterday with her girlfriends. She came home, walked through the door and sarcastically said, “I saw your mud bogging snorkel thingy. Looks nice”

 

They are supposed to help a ton with dust by getting the intake into cleaner air so I guess you could sell her on that.

I've never really considered a snorkel, but damn that looks great. It is a dusty MF around here.

Although I think we get about 1/2 of ours from southern NM. Theres couple of climbing areas I go to that have very alkaline soil. The dirt access road is like driving on the moon. Cant see shit if you are behind another car.

Yes, please. I bet there’s a market for that. I’ll buy the snorkel, you produce the bracket and we’ll bundle them for a huge mark up!
In fact @JakeJake, if we had a donor truck, we could mold the neck perfect on each one and FGT owners would eat it up.

 

My sequoia buddy used the same kit, and it attaches at a weird part in the door sil, requiring you to cut gasket material…….. not exactly my cup of tea. On my 4runner the TJM arm attaches to the face of the a pillar, which our sunny weather rotted out the rubber nut certs in no time…..
so if I did attach to the A pillar, I’d use legit nut certs to some kind of bracket, without looking to hoky

So that’s the other thing. If they can produce these for the series 100 and sell them for $60, how much would it actually take to produce one that fits our trucks without buying theirs and modifying it?

 

I’m not even trying that, but after a bumper is installed and liners cut to fit, the air box intake is super exposed, that’s my main concern. One of the work vans has the most glorious spray thru a puddle, no water gets anywhere near the windshield.
In the truck, barely 2” of water on the road and I can’t go over 3mph without getting blinded by the windshield spray.
