Every couple days to couple weeks I hop in my truck and go to start it and get an error message that says push brake pedal and hold key to start button. Anyone have any idea what that’s all about?

Sometimes I don’t push the brake down hard enough but my truck is new and brakes are super tight on this thing ,

Make sure to push pedal down hard enough

It’s happened to me. I eventually found leaving the doors unlocked for a period of time(like long detailing days) then jumping in to start it will prompt that. If you cycle the key fob to lock then unlock it’ll start right up. Putting the fob on top of the start button regains communication as well. Sorry, don’t know the science behind it. It’s new tech for me haha

Had it twice early on, also had to link my key fob to my profile twice. Then I saw a check battery in key fob warning (or similar).

Took fob apart, checked battery with a meter, all good. Put battery back after cleaning and has been good for 3-4 months since. Likely just some crap in the fobs battery contacts.

My truck is unlocked for about 11 hours a day at work in a secure compound, but it only happened at home where it is always locked.

Yes, for the start/stop function the brake pedal needs to be pressed all the way to activate it. It has a 2-stage sensitivity. It might also be the same for the push to start, but IDK for sure. This could be tested pretty easily.

Def not the issue as it tells me to put the key fob to the start button.

Might as well just follow the instructions on the dash if you’re gonna do that. It’d be interesting to figure out why it happens.

I’ll make note next time. I don’t recall any pedal issues. Just having to press the fob on the button to start it.

Mine does this if I unlock the truck with the app, but has not otherwise.

You know, I can’t remember about the brake pedal tbh. If it’s happening to yours, I imagine it is to mine too. I believe it is by design. A little annoying, but part of the “security” culture/paranoia that seems to permeate Toyota’s approach to the app and remote start.

First and foremost, make sure brake lights on rear of vehicle are lighting up when issue occurs. Tricky to confirm by yourself, but I have seen brake light switch failures on other manufacturers vehicles cause push to start no start concerns. Normally brake pedal only needs to be depressed enough to light up the brake lights.

If the fob batteries are low or even dead, you can still start engine by holding fob right up the start switch button using a near field communication chip embedded in fob for backup if fob battery fails.

not the issue on my end. Brake lights turn on

I’m guessing this is the issue. Likely a bad connection or something. I took the remote apart and wiped the battery down yesterday and put it back together. We will see what happens here.

so you are saying when you get the message pushing the fob to the start doesn’t start your truck? Weird, that’s the only thing I’ve tried since this happened and it’s worked every time.

what’s odd is that both my 23 platinum hybrid that I had for 1200 miles and my 23 1794 hybrid both do it. I find it unlikely that both trucks had fob battery issues along with others having this issue. But who knows. It’s a strange scenario with seemingly no rhyme or reason.

This happens to me a few times a month but
I don't think it has anything to do with the fob battery but more so a "security" thing built into the software. As others have mentioned this happens to me mostly when I have the truck unlocked for prolonged periods of time or use the app. That leads me to believe the software is just making sure the owner is indeed trying to start the truck and it is not being stolen.

    Maybe @ryanwgregg can help?

To add to this issue, I have the full digital cluster. My left side keeps resetting to the fuel economy. I have it set to trip as it’s the absolute last thing in the world I want to see lol. Anyone else have this happen?

Happens to me once in a while. I just push it again. I probably also push brake a little harder.

    Think it is my fault.

I don’t think it’s tied to anything really. At least from my experience I can’t seem to figure out why it happens. Seems to be a random issue in my truck

Mine stays on exactly what I put it on. Milage today, radio tomorrow, then when I restart it goes to the last thing I had it on

Did you ever ask dealer what was up? I’ve got a ‘24 with 150 miles that has done it three times. I’m kinda thinking it’s the “unlocked doors” thing. We don’t ever lock doors in the sticks where we live so I imagine it’s a safety thing. Also, my Toyota app had a “unlocked” doors warning. I cleared that and it seems fine now.

I also live in the sticks and never lock my truck when its parked at home. It often sits for a few days without being started. I've never experienced the error message described in the original post. I also don't use the app for anything other than to check for recall notifications.

Not really sure what it is. I’m thinking it’s app related and some security measure. It’s all good and I’m sure will be no big deal. I tried to start and unlock/lock with the app and after that is when issues popped up so I’m leaning towards the app.

That would be my guess, as well.

I did get the "Would you like to adjust your seat" message a few times, but re-linking my FOB to my profile corrected that problem.
