This is the first vehicle I’ve owned that has an electric parking brake, and one that automatically engages and disengages when driving, and in park.

With vehicles with a traditional parking brake you’re “supposed” to always engage it. Most people I talked to never do, nor did I.

just wondering if anyone here has turned off the auto engage? If so why?

for sure after a wash in the winter I will turn off the auto feature. (Was always told not to use parking brake after washing).

I also use it 100% of the time. I think the benefit of saving the trans gears when parking on an incline outweigh any possible down sides.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
I turn off the auto because it engages after I put it into park. I religiously follow the "neutral, manual parking brake, let go of brake to ensure lockup, then park". Brakes are cheaper than transmissions.

Weather around here doesn't get icy often but I will hopefully keep it in mind when that time comes.

Always have used the brake to save the tranny some wear on grades

I get using a parking brake on grade (and I have) but on flat?

I,guess the freezing after a wash is more dependent if the parking brake is on the caliper, or in the hub

All my vehicles give a little lurch forward going to park even on a flat garage if the PB is not engaged. Maybe nothing but figure save the tranny a few hundred of those lurches forward can't do any harm. To each his own.

I’m sorry but how do you turn that feature off. I thought it was always on. I know the button under the radio is there with hold right above it but I assumed that was just a manual mode. I’ve never really played with it

Never mind I just played with it. Mine has always been on, and didn’t know it could be turned off

I'm iffy on this. In all the vehicles and miles I've put on my vehicles I've never run into an issue where the transmission failed because of the pin stopping the vehicle from rolling without the parking brake. Not saying it helps save it just saying I've never seen it be an issue. It freaks me out during the winter time since I leave my truck outside all the time and I live in an area where it can be cold at certain times and I don't want that to get stuck.

Exactly, why I’m posting. I’ve read that the parking pawl is fragile, and not using the p brake leaves it vulnerable. Having said that I don’t know anyone who broke a pawl.

any of our car washes all say to not use the p brake right after washing.

i,haven’t even looked, but do the new tundras have caliper, or hub p brakes?

I use mine at least once a day, but I turned off the auto feature as on flat ground I don’t see the need for that electric motor to always be engaging the parking brake.

it gets pretty cold here in the winter and my regular brakes will freeze after a rinse, resulting in having to put the truck in reverse to break free.

I use it all the time. On Auto. I think it’s a great feature. Had it a full Colorado winter last year with no problems. I forget to set the brake in my wife’s Subaru now, lol.

That little parking pawl is very fragile and expensive to replace!! Never trust it on any kind of incline to hold the vehicle. And if someone bumps your vehicle while it’s parked, SNAP! Busted. Always set the brakes!!

That's how Anton Yelchin died iirc, pawl failed and the vehicle pinned him

That was the official story .. and Isaac Kappy supposedly drove from Hollyweird to some desolate spot in AZ and jumped off a bridge.
