Fast-forward to post #35 where I am ready to start after getting many tips in this thread

Was going to let the shop replace my timing belt, but after my LSD oil mishap at the shop I’ve decided to do it myself. Going on a 1200 mile round trip vacation and need to have this completed Wednesday or Thursday morning at the latest.

I ordered the parts linked in the sticky. I have since read to stay away from some of the gates parts. Does this include the HD belt I ordered?

the invoice states “2005” but I believe I checked all the part numbers and they are correct for the 2006.

I saw some discussion but no consensus on the fan clutch. Any recommendations there?

The plan is to flush the radiator tomorrow and have it all torn down Monday. So when the parts arrive Tuesday, I can start the install/reassemble and then finish Wednesday.

I saw in another thread where someone said it took them 10 hours. Is that reasonable for someone that hasn’t done it on this truck before?

I’ve done all of this many years ago when I used to do my own work on a different vehicle. Everything except actually replaced the timing belt. But this being the first time on my truck, I know it will take longer.

also, I would agree with replacing the radiator no less than every other time. But mine was replaced within the last few years and it seems to still be in tiptop shape.

i will begin watching the videos later today

is there a need to have the truck jacked up? I simply cannot put my vehicle on jackstands having had a friend lose his dad to that as a child. so I would have to have an alternative

Nothing wrong with the Gates HD belt.
I haven't replaced mine yet. 190k miles. They seem to last a long time. Have you checked yours? Aisin is the way to go if you do replace it.

I have not done my own timing belt but I don't see a reason why it would need to be on jack stands.

It’s probably not necessary but I’d rather be working with the truck up even slightly higher rather than being crouched down or sitting on a stool maybe the whole time.

I checked, and it does not free spin. no wobble while turned off.

I need to test it and get it warm and then cut it off and see if it stops quickly or keep spinning.

that’s all I know to do to test it

mine has 304,000 miles. Unfortunately, I misplaced all of my service records when I moved two years ago. so I’m not sure if it’s original, but I suspect it has been replaced.

I’m going to see if the old shop I used can print out all of my records

I know at a minimum he replaced the front cam seals when he did the timing belt. I’m not sure about the crank seals

i’m going to partially document my journey here. After taking a good look at the front engine compartment, I’m not sure why I’ve let this intimidate me since I’ve done most of this before, even if decades ago

The main thing I see is that you've got the wrong type of coolant in the truck. I don't think green is good. I would consider flushing all that out when you do the job, and getting the correct coolant in.

I like where you're going with it all, good stuff. 10 hours is pretty dang reasonable for the work, yes.

It sounds like you know the history of the truck pretty well, or at least it's been worked on. Have you considered waiting to do all this until you get back from your trip?
Not that you can't complete the work solidly, but you know how it goes sometimes - if you need the vehicle by Thursday AM and you intend to tear into it Tuesday....
If there isn't some dire reason you have to get the belt changed before you go then just change it when you get back. Does it have 200k miles on it?

    * Maybe pull a cover and inspect it?

And maybe even replacing the rad for peace of mind and to make flushing a lot easier, ha, although that one looks….newer maybe?
Edit, ignore, I see you done did this

I personally think 10 hours seems low but I'm slower than most.

I totally agree and that was part of my concern from the beginning. As far as waiting, it would just help my peace of mind for the trip But the most pressing need is for the new shocks, coils, and LBJ’s. They are definitely The weakest link.

i’m not leaving until the following Tuesday. That was probably my biggest reservation but I do have several days cushion. I just wanted it done by then so that I can let the shop replace the lower ball joints and install the new bilstein 5100 front shocks/coil over with 1 inch lift

The shop could do this Monday and Tuesday morning, but just erring on the side of caution I would rather get it done late next week.

That was a concern. That’s why I plan to have it all broken down so when the parts arrive Tuesday I can begin installation. So unless the shipment is delayed, I should have a 10 hour window of work time just to assemble with the new parts

but with almost everything I do, it is the unexpected that can consume as much time as the standard part of the project

I swapped mine one weekend. Took it all apart one day and got the belt on and timing lined up. Called it a day. Came back the next day and put everything back together. Probably 10-12 hours taking my time over 2 days. Still on my original fan bracket and pulley. Maybe swap next time. I did change the radiator out as it was already leaking at the cap seams. I’m not 100% sure if the tensioner got replaced, I think it did. Replaced the serpentine with a Gates HD and it’s been great for 50k miles now. Only issues at the time was the crank bolt, didn’t have the special tool to hold the pulley wheel, used a pneumatic impact to zip it off and back on, not sure if I got it torqued back to spec though. The rest of the bolts I had my torque wrench for. My water pump neck leaked a little after assembly and I had to reseal it. Also my OE radiator hose clamps had no juice left in em. The connections were leaking there too. I just slid them back and added some hose clamps to seal it up. Still double clamped to this day. My next belt swap will be art. Cleaning everything. Resealing everything. Replacing the fan bracket. Painting any worn and tired bits. A restoration of sorts.

sounds like I have allotted plenty of time with a cushion as long as the new parts arrive on time

I am on the same path. My next one will have to be when I do the restoration although I will probably go back and do the skid plate and a few things I saw in the professional hand model’s project thread.

I want to say 10 hours is flag/book time, ie the time a Toyota mechanic is allowed to do this job in their internal guidance. I like your plan to disassemble and be ready when parts arrive. My guy—like you, probably, technically skilled but had never done this exact job on this exact motor—did mine in 10 over the course of a weekend.

Looked back at the pics I took. Good news is I used a Denso radiator. Apparently I also duck hunted that morning an hour from my house, and completed a refinish on a Remington woodsmaster that was my wife’s grandfathers. #overachiever

This. Although it looks like that plan is already underway. Flush everything out with water in between, replace with pink.

I did reconsider and decide to postpone it until after my trip thanks for the observation.

The rear shocks and 1 inch lift took a little bit longer since it was the first time I had done that

The most pressing needs were the shocks and lower ball joints, which will all be done before my trip

I have not done my own timing belt but I don't see a reason why it would need to be on jack stands.[/QUOTE]

No need for jack stands. But when I did mine I was replacing the radiator also. Having the radiator removed was a big help in my opinion. This way I was working in front of me, instead of working leaning down with limited space between the timing belt and radiator.

There was someone who used to be on here that recommended replacing the radiator and fan clutch at the same time as the timing belt. It was based more on insurance than that the parts have the same life span. More like - while you have everything out, replace any wear items and save the hassle of going back.

One of the timing belt videos shows them replacing nearly every part they remove (all OEM - including the battery). Can't imagine how much they spent in parts.

Mine's only had the belt done once and the radiator was replaced separately. Due to the age, I'll probably replace them next time around.

Probably PHM. The fan bracket is hot or miss. Small amount of failures, not catastrophic by any means. Radiator on the other hand. Larger number of failures and failure ranges from coolant leak (inconvenient) to pink milkshake (potentially catastrophic). The radiator is pretty solid insurance. I’ll likely do mine again and the fan bracket next belt change as it will likely be the last one for me on the truck for 10 years or so. I don’t drive enough miles to need it sooner.

Will be tackling the timing belt in the coming weeks. I did decide to replace the radiator.

Any recs on a brand of radiator? I believe I have all other parts except for the radiator hoses and the crankshaft damper pulley holder/removal tool which I am ordering now.

Where you order from is important too, since a lot of places can't seem to deliver without the radiator looking like this.

No stands needed. Replacing radiator at the same time gives a ton of spare room to work - I use the cardboard from the new box to protect the back of the AC condenser unit.

Lots of different ways to remove the crank pulley bolt, but a 1/2" cordless impact will save you a lot of time if you have one.

I use a big sheet of cardboard to lay out all of my bolts/hardware on in the order I removed them - along with a permanent market to label everything. I reinstall in the opposite direction. For wire harnesses and various items I have undone but don't remove I tie blaze orange utility flag tape (a 30 yard roll is about $1) onto them.

    Love these trucks.
