    Hey Everyone,

'23 limited Crewmax 4WD owner here with a lesser talked about problem. On a recent road trip I began to notice a whistle/hum/howl noise when above 65 mph and on the throttle. The noise I would compare it to is the sound you hear when blowing on a half full glass bottle, but quieter. The noise seems to be coming from the middle/passenger side of the vehicle.

    • It is 100% related to pressure being applied to the throttle. Immediately starts and goes away once I pressure to the pedal it starts. Once I release, it goes away.
    • I'm comfortable saying it is not the wind noise.
    • I can clearly hear the turbos separately, and they do not appear to be related.
    • It does not change when mirrors are in/out.
    • It does go away in neutral while pressing the gas.
    • It gets slightly louder at higher speeds, but does plateau.

Has anyone else had this? Are there any good videos of the issue? Any discussion with the dealerships on it?

OK, I've been hearing something like this too and thought I was crazy. Right around 60km/h and doesn't seem to be related to any wind.

Interesting thing is that both the OP and myself have a MY23 and the TSB seems to be an old one for MY22 only....

Roll down the back rear window and see if the noise gets louder/ more noticeable. If it’s only at a particular speed and under load (throttle applied), it’s probably the rear diff howling some. My 23 sr5 CM 4x4 does this as well.

Sounds like diff whine. It’s a feature of Toyotas.

Hear mine between 80-85mph, both before and after the MX4 cover was installed. Assumed it may be a wheel bearing, but haven't had a chance to dig in yet.

I have the same thing. I thought it was associated with that stupid fake engine noise. I was going to turn that off and if I still hear it after that, then I will take it back to the dealership

I asked the same and was told it at the turbo engaging which aligned with the throttle being depressed.

Just noticed this whine while driving at around 80mph. Steady whine when applying gas pedal mid range. Not turbo whine. Have 4k miles on the truck and didn't hear this before.

Already had the plugs installed for under the truck as per tsb, so this is not it

Anyone has any news about this whine?

When going 80 put your truck in sequential shift mode (sport shift where you select the gear it tops out in) it will probably drop one gear and the noise will go away. I have the same problem and think it’s the transmission. When pulling a trailer at say 80 mph I don’t hear the noise that’s why I figured out it was dependent on the gear you’re in. I also have the noise at 40 mph too. I thought it was the rear differential pinion bearing but not sure.

I also have this issue on a 2023 Tundra SR5 TRD Sport. When I first purchased the vehicle, I was having this whine sound issue at speeds at or above 40MPH. I took it in for inspection to the dealer and Toyota engineering determined that the source of the sound was coming from the rear differential. Their solution was to replace the rear diff. After replacing, the truck no longer made the sound at lower speeds, however, I still hear the sound at higher speeds (exactly at 78MPH+). I noticed that if you lower the rear window, the sound is indeed more audible. I have since taken it back to the dealer for additional assessment and they were able to reproduce the sound on a used 2022 Tundra Platinum and, after with reviewing a Toyota Field Tech, their official response is that it is "characteristic" of the vehicle. This is obviously an unacceptable response since Toyota previously acknowledged the sound was an issue at lower speeds when they replaced the differential the first time.

I have since opened a case with Toyota corporate that has gone absolutely NO WHERE but I continue to contact them.

My recommendation to all of you experiencing this issue is to start opening cases with Toyota to bring attention to this issue. You can submit a case here: https://support.toyota.com/s/questions-comments?language=en_US

Sounds like what a lot of folks with Tacoma’s went through, especially the off-road package. At first dealers were replacing diffs, then a tsb came out that never really worked, then it was labeled normal. 23 Tacoma OR trucks still make the same noise and replacing the diff may make it better, worse or No change. I wouldn’t be surprised if 24 Tacoma’s do it as well. You would think Toyota engineers would be able to figure this annoyance out by now!?

Just tried this again on the freeway.
For this whining hum noise whenever I press gas pedal starting 76mph. Shifting gears manually doesn't make a difference, whining noise is there.

It's not really loud, but it's definitely noticeable because it's different sound (whine/hum) from how engine or exhaust sounds.

I think it would be hard to get dealer to do anything about it... Especially that it's well above 65mph speed limit around my area.

Took it to dealer, explained them that the hum noise starts at 76mph and above...

Got the truck back - they don't want to drive that fast as no major freeway closer than 20 min drive, and they didn't hear anything at 55-60mph.

Im going to buy steelman chassis ear wireless microphone and try to narrow down this hum myself, then will go to another dealership near the freeway to hopefully get this repaired.

Sooo annoying with these stupid little issues with my 2022

I just picked up a 22 1794 Edition and I am also hearing this whine between 40-55mph and a higher pitch at about 60mph+
Is there any update on this? Or is this just the nature of the truck? I'm at 27k and want to be sure I address this before the 36k warranty is up :notsure:

Yes, tape ip all seams with paper tape to see where exactly wind noise is coming from. Take photos for the dealership.

I had same issue, dealer replaced driver side of rubber window runner twice to get whistling fixed. Still have some wind noise like an old corolla...

I also have a definitive whine at a wide range of speeds and what I’d call a rhythmic hum and 75+. I just noticed the hum on a 2 hour trip. It’s about one second on and one second off it may not be gone but just quieter for a second. Dropping it into sport may have stopped it or i just couldn’t hear it as well with more noise from higher RPM. It does seem to stop if coasting. Pretty annoying, I couldn’t stop trying to figure out what it was for 2 hours. This is on a 23 trd sport.

Could you park somewhere near a wall or garage where you can hear noises from your truck better, open rear window, and while in neutral press gas pedal to 2k rpm or slightly more. Let me know if you hear this same whine which you hear at high speeds.

My whine starts when accelerating, starting at 76mph exactly and if rpm is above 2k. It's silent if I don't press gas pedal.

    Let me know

New here and glad I found this topic because this same whining noise is driving me crazy! I have a 2023 Platinum Crewmax 4x4. Noise starts at about 39mph and goes away at 43-44mph, then again at 78+mph and it is annoying! When I tow my travel trailer it starts at about 66mph. Dealer looked at it at 10k, said they could not duplicate, took the tech with me on a test drive and he heard it, said he will contact Toyota to see if that is a common issue, said they will call me in 2-3 days, of course they never did, went again last week for the 15k service, same BS, could not duplicate, took the case number they gave me and called Toyota, Toyota said there is no such a case number, probably a dealer internal case…basically they decided the noise is normal snd there is no solution! Called Toyota and filed a case myself, they said somebody will contact me in 1-3 days….. between the dealer snd Toyota I cant decide which one is worse! I owned 2 2023 Tundras before this one, an SR5 and another Platinum, both CM and 4x4 and no noise! 6th new Toyota for me and first one with issues, disappointing!
    Rant over!

there is a tsb (T-SB-0068-22) that says there is a whistle noise coming from the front lower control arms...there are factory holes in them and the fix is to insert plugs part # 90950-A1021

It's probably the rear carrier assembly. I had the same issue on my 21, dealer replaced it and issue was gone. They said upon inspection, the tolerances were off inside it. Had a 23 Tacoma rental with the same issue a couple months ago. It's a Toyota thing, probably won't cause damage but sure is annoying.

Replacing side mirrors haven't yet solved the issue... Based on all the posts since 2022 model year.

It's usually the rubber seals around the window or door

Here's the main thread about wind noise, browse through the pages and read posts that have photos, it'll explain how to tape up the seams to diagnose wind noise to help the dealer, as they will mostly end up wasting your time otherwise

I have this same exact noise at 82 mph and ONLY with the throttle depressed. If I go slower than 82 with the gas peddle pressed - nothing. If I go faster than 82 and then let off the gas, even going faster than 82, the noise goes away. It has something to do with the speed AND pressure on the gas peddle. I haven't noticed it at slower speeds, but now that others have, I will try to reproduce.

I thought I was losing my mind on a trip from SC to DE. Every time I let off the throttle the sound stops. Shifting into a different gear did nothing. That 78 mph must be the harmonic frequency of something in the diff.

OK, so I got the rear diff replaced under warranty and the noise is gone! I opened a case with Toyota, a service director from the dealer called me, we test drove and he agreed that the noise is not normal. A master mechanic test drove it and heard the noise and determined it is coming from the rear diff, the dealer sent a request to Toyota to replace the rear diff under warranty and it got approved! Had to wait for the rear diff to be sent because it was on backorder but Toyota expedited it and it got there for 10-12 days. Picked up my truck today and so far no noise! Scary part is they gave me a 2023 1794 TRD OR as a loaner and it had exactly the same problem! I guess the issue is hit or miss, not sure if Toyota is aware of the problem or not, maybe I got lucky but if you have a noise coming from the rear of your Tundra, only when your foot is on the gas pedal it is the rear diff! Don’t let anybody tell you that it is a normal noise, it is not! I had two service advisors and a service managers tell me that! Toyota made it right! I am in love with my truck again! It’s a great feeling!

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I dropped off the Tundra for 10k oil change today and was about to show the service advisor how my truck whines while in neutral at 2k rpm... And the mfer decided not to whine!!! Even though I could reproduce that whine noise 100% times before.

Thats ok... I'll be back to them for this issue once again and will report back
