Can anyone tell me why I’m getting so much water in the bed of my truck after installing the Bakflip mx4. I hear a few drops are normal but not this much.

You should be able to just look into the bed and see where the sunlight is making its way through the weather stripping. The bedside corners near the cab aren’t always 100% sealed without adding additional weather stripping for most tonneaus.

The tailgate doesn’t seal well . I put strips of weather strips along side and bottom of tailgate openings. I did it mainly to keep dust out , but it also keep water out

Did you install all of the weatherstripping per the instructions? There are small pieces at each corner, near the cab, that are kinda tricky to get installed correctly.

My MX4 keeps the cab side to the bed dry, even when running the truck thru the car wash. It does leak a little water at the corners of the tailgate, but I think that's due to the poorly sealed tailgate, not the tonneau cover.

Completely forgot I did this too. There are some big gaps around the tailgate. Self expanding 1inch weather stripping filled those voids well to keep dust and water out.

I've never understood why manufactures can't design a tailgate that seals just like the passenger doors.

I installed a tailgate weatherstrip kit on my Tundra. It reduced the dust and water in the bed by maybe 25%, but that's all. I've decided to just live with it.

It’s not the tailgate, it’s the other end of the bed. Where the drain lines are. I followed the instructions with the weather stripping but just can’t figure it out

Let the bed dry completely, then spray water all around the perimeter of the cover. It should be obvious where the water is getting in. Then add some weatherstripping to those areas.

The self expanding stuff contours to the tailgate and bedsides well. Nothing fancy about it. IMG_1707.jpg IMG_1706.jpg

I'm going to try this solution. The tailgate gasket kit I installed didn't help much.

Do you have a link to the weatherstripping you used? TIA.

I don’t. It’s just from Lowe’s and comes in a big role. Single Sided adhesive.
Also before anyone goes “what about the paint underneath!?” I personally don’t care but you can lay a strip of clear ppf down first before sticking the weather stripping to the tailgate.

No leaks from my MX4 at the front Corners. Did the install myself. Be sure the foam blocks in the corners were installed correctly and the cover adjustment is far enough forward. Only getting a few drips at the tailgate corners which I’ve gotten on other trucks too. Not an issue as it goes underneath the rubber bed mat and nothing gets wet.

You might consider getting a roll of thin tubular stick on weather stripping from your local hardware store. Lifting the front panel and running a strip across the whole front and around the front corners. Did they install the weather strip across the front of the bed?

I was thinking the same suggestion @PNW Tundra Mike recommended. You may also want to inspect the bed top rail gasket along sides to ensure it sits flush. In reviewing your photos, it is apparent the water trail down the side and visual water splashes are originating from the front corners; not the tailgate.

Can you show more overall photos of your bakflip and the corners? Curious what type of connection you have at the corners. I know on the OEM cover there was recommended fix that had caused some issues with water intrusion by overtightening the closet bolts creating pooling but based on your photos and the amount, I'd say this is not the case. https://www.tundras.com/threads/oem-tonneau-fix.130155/

A few things come to mind after looking at your photos; great detail btw.

    1. Are the appropriate corner and bulkhead gaskets are in place? See this video @ 2:00 mins in from realtruck who owns bakflip: https://youtu.be/0VJ69_h0yyk?si=uaWZwgcqLY3r1zpD&t=111

    2. After opening the tonneau completely; flipping all three sections up, is it pushed all the way forward to the bulkhead?

    3. Was the shipping/packaging material removed from the cover and at the connection to the rail bracket? This can be seen at 6:00 in.

Other than these, this is all I can think of. I know this cover it water resistant and not necessary waterproof but your initial photos indicate something is wrong. Where did you get it from? Did you install it yourself? Wish I could offer more advice.

I see a couple of problems in your pics.

    1. The rubber seal that runs along the cab rail should be tight against the cab rail. Yours appears to have a gap. You may need to tighten the thumb nuts a bit more Here's mine:

    IMG_2175.jpg

    2. Your tailgate appears to be misaligned with the bed. The tailgate top rail and the bed side top rail should be flush. Your tailgate top rail looks lower. Here's mine:

    IMG_2176.jpg

    Hope this helps,

    Matt

The leading edge lip seal can’t touch the bed on my install because theres a 6’ strip of foam rubber gasket material that should have been applied on the top of the front edge of the bed. The covers lip seal should firmly rest on top of that strip and seal the leading edge. The corner rubber blocks in your pics aren’t even compressed. I agree with Matt your cover is not cranked down tight enough. See how the blocks on mine are squished in there to seal. They aren’t holding up the corner caps as they are in your install. I believe that’s where your water is getting in. (The front bed stick on strip seal and your corner foam blocks must be in contact with eachother or else water will flow right in) If your installer cut the front strip too short to meet the corner blocks, just peel it off and replace it. Can buy at any Hdwr store.

    Water flowing right in here?

So I’ve tightened them down to almost hand tight with a few extra turns but they keep loosening. Am I supposed to tighten them as tight as I can get it?
I have the strip that goes across as the top of the bed as well so that rubber flap won’t lay flat
What’s odd is one side stays dry but the other doesn’t. You’d think water would get in on both sides

So one video showed to keep the square rubber pieces on when bolting it down but this video shows him taking it off. I have them on and maybe that’s why it’s not staying tight . Did you all remove yours? In the video it’s about 6:08 in

The square rubber pieces should be remove, and the thumb nuts should be crank down about as tight as you can get them by hand. I used some Loctite on the elevator bolts to prevent them from loosening up.

    Hey Matt,

Well that’s definitely something I did wrong. Not sure that will make a difference in the height where the water is getting in but I’ll remove them and try that first

Get a Lomax Tri-Fold. Not one drop of water in the bed, no drain lines, nothing. Rain, washes, zero water.

PNW & Matt. Ironically the side that’s up more is the dry side . The side that’s flatter is what’s wet
