Still new to the tundra family. Will 10w40 full synthetic motor oil be ok to run in my 2017 5.7 tundra? Just not a big fan of 0w20. I pull trailers every now and then and 0 weight oil just doesn’t seem to be a good weight of oil if you use your truck. Any info is appreciated.

0w is the cold viscosity, so the advantage there is better circulation during a cold start. At temp, it’s 20 weight viscosity. I’d check the manual for severe duty and temperature ranges before switching that to 40. I’ve read about vvt engines using oil pressure to adjust cam timing, so too thick might cause problems.

Do a search. The 5.7 can use up to 20w50 believe. You're in Kentucky so a 0/5w would be good for the winter. In the summer run a thicker oil. These engine sound like diesel on thin oil. It's all because of the EPA/CAFE standards. Thicker oil will no cause any problems, I prefer it better than the watered down 0w20 actually.

Got absolutely nothing else to do with your time just run a "search" on oil recommendations in the forums. It'll provide ya with hours of pointless discussions, some actually backed up in fact. Bottom line .... Just change your oil and change it often!

This is a 12 min vid that's absolutely worth taking the time to watch. Actually, it's worth watching a few times. Much more valuable and informative than any input from the peanut gallery.

"... but I've seen studies showing that going from a 30 to a 20 could result in over 1 percent increase in efficiency ..."

All you need to hear and keep using your old trusty high viscosity oil.

Well since he said to ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWYAS use what's recommended in your owner manual and not the input from the peanut gallery. What oil should we use? Post 64 from this thread shows oil viscosity that can be use from the service manual. So in the US I guess oil acts different in the 5.7 than in Mexico.

In FL I'd switch to 10w40 or at least 10w30 year round.

The video posted above certainly does explain it very well. That said, 5w-30 IS the recommended oil viscosity for the 5.7 everywhere else except the US. Below is the owners manual from a vehicle with the 5.7 (3UR-FE) that is outside of the US.

    84c2bceb-8885-46b7-b369-6f278ca6b5b2-png_628817461de779c1318c7d710cfc1f4d76ac34f3.png

I personally use 5w-30, however if you want some thicker oil still find a 5w-40. You'll get the best of both worlds.

And from my own experience in other vehicles (Subaru's), I have seen excess oil consumption, ex: 1 quart per 900 miles, using 0w-20. After simply switching to 5w-30 that has significantly improved. Manufactures may trying to say oil consumption is expected and within range, but their estimates are, in my opinion, insane. And from first hand experience, thinner oils cause nothing but issues, and not worth the fraction of a percentage in efficiency.

Get the thicker oil and change it often. You'll be fine.

That's what confuses people. They think that if they dont use 0w20 their engine will blow up. But yet in Mexico, you can use all the way up to 20w50. Its all because of the EPA/CAFE standards. Just like the 10k oil changes. Another lie from them. 5k max.

It discusses temp ranges (and load). Doesn't say to use any oil from 0w20 - 20w50, based on gut feelings. Kentucky, Alberta and Mexico are all very different.

Exactly. Even more important than the viscosity is clean oil. I also do 5k changes on my truck, but do 3.5k on my Outback because that bitch still eats some oil!! lol But not nearly as much as it used it at least.

My main issue with 0w-20 or 0w-16 isn't a engine wear problem, it's oil consumption. But as I stated, manufactures have crazy specs. Subaru and Toyota both officially state that burning 1 quart per 1-1.2k miles is acceptable. I'd really like to see how those 10k oil change intervals look when that happens.....

I really like Engineering Explained on YouTube, but I don't think he covered the issue fully in that video. That's not a knock on him, just a topic that wasn't covered and I find to be the biggest issue.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    and

5w-30 is easier to change when the oil is hot.

0w-20 comes out like water, when hot, and splashes EVERYWHERE.

stop....just stop....yes,I just got the fumoto. and it's like a God send. my little piece of clear hose stays on the oil catch bucket thing and it now drains directly into it.

So if a truck leaving Mexico with 20w50 enters Texas, what happens to the engine? This obviously the same temp and load on the truck. So why does Toyota not tell you you can use 20w50 or any other viscosity in the US if conditions warrant the use of it?

Unless you live in damn cold area, disregard oil viscosity.

    it's all the same.

Like @Jowett said. 5w-30 now, go in peace. we have assuaged you of one of life's quandaries.

and...put don't put this much thought in your Trans oil....just use valvoline maxlife.

Yes, been running 5w30 since 2010. After the SC install I run 5w40 in summer. Ow8 0w16 just say No, I'm not doing it and I will not conform.
