I did this mod to my Tacoma years ago. @G.T. On TW has a great thread on it. I could not find anything to do this to our Tundras. So here is what I came up with.

This will work for anyone adding the grab handle with the 1/4” bottom bolt needed for the install. This will also work for early 2nd gens with the handle already factory installed however you need to figure out the correct metric bolt size. This isn’t the cheapest phone mount but it doesn’t block windshield or side mirror and clears the vent. No stick on stuff or magnetic BS. It’s really in a great spot and you can make numerous adjustments. I spent about $70 total.

    Parts-
    1/4 x 20 x 3 Cap hex bolt ( I used stainless)
    1/4 ID x 5/8 OD x 3/4 long spacer ( I used aluminum)
    Thin 1/4 washer
Ram mount universal bar mount 1” ball

For the phone mount I used the following-
    Ram medium coupler
    Ram small coupler
    Ram 1” ball extension
    Ram quick grip phone mount

I mounted the quick grip upside down. It is easier to load the phone in where I have it located.
Once you have the hardware in you can use numerous different phone holders or mounts. This stuff is all available at hardware store, Amazon, or Ram mounts so I’m not going to post links.
If anyone comes up with other ideas please post here.
Disclaimer- I’m not responsible for you stripping bolts, adding handles, crashing cause you’re looking at your phone etc etc. Do this at your own risk—

    Not sure at this point.
Looks pretty sweet! If I ran this, I’d probably turn that twist handle on the small arm towards the windshield.

Was going to run it upside down as well, but was told the spring compression can get loose over time due to bumps and what not.

That's a great idea and I think I have enough Ram bits to make this happen.
Stock metric bolt is 6mmX1.5mm pitch.

Only thing I wonder about is if that will affect the side airbag?

    Cheers

I found this video that put me at ease: Toyota Tacoma Driver Side Grab Handle Airbag Concerns

    Key points were:
    1. It's a side curtain airbag meant to come out alongside the window between the pillar trim and glass window, creating the curtain between.
    2. The passenger side if there was a safety issue would have the same issue.

I found it compelling but obviously you can decide.

@Teegee I'm wondering if there is enough room in the mounting point to sneak some cables into - I'd love to do same mount but have the cradle have a wireless charging component.

Did you get the 1/4 ID x 5/8 OD x 3/4 long spacer from Lowes or Home Depot?

There was not when I did mine. So I just have a long USB going across my dash.

Nice write up OP. I think there was another one floating around somewhere, but I only posted a couple pics when I did mine.

I'm also interested in seeing if I can get a charging mount here and found this linked off the TW thread from GT that OP mentions above:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/gps-install-hardwired-to-the-a-pillar.305904/

There's one photo in particular in the linked thread where it looks like I could drill a hole in the lower mount point on the pillar that would normally be obscured by the handle and then there's enough space in the matching point in the grab handle (or after a little bit of drilling) to snake a wire through, position it so its secure and away from air bag, and then run it on down to the fuse box left of steering.

Looks like most people do the add-a-fuse options on an existing fuse to power it - I'm wondering if I want to use a MagSafe charger (to fast charge iPhones at max speed) if I need to add anything special. In @RainMan_PNW's thread on his custom MagSafe tray he used one of these (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09D98799T).

Still trying to find handle and pillar at a good price but leaning towards giving this a shot.

Just realized one tricky bit would be getting the USB plug side of the MagSafe charger through the handle and pillar without cutting/drilling a bigger hole. I think the example was probably using a smaller DC male jack.
