2200 miles on my new 2022 Tundra and the brakes are squealing. Not a squeak, like neighbors flagging me down. After two or three stops it goes away.
Toyota says rust forms overnight and it is perfectly normal. NEW BRAKES SQUEALING IS NOT NORMAL. Is it poor quality parts? Will ceramic pads help. How do I get this fixed? Thanks

My neighbors squeak to flag me down too. Tree rats have their unusual ways.

Maybe a rock stuck in there somewhere? Ceramic brakes tend to be squeaky. They could apply some anti-squeak to the back of the pads to help with that.

Finally! Bad pads and had to resurface the rotors.

I have the same problem, started the first week of ownership and was given the same story--"It is normal for ceramic brakes to squeak when cold" It will stop once it is warmed up. This is not normal, nor is it acceptable. Taking it back again and will continue to until they do something to change it.

Was this what the dealership said/did? Or just something you had to figure out on your own.

I’ve been having the same issue, since day 1. At delivery, they took it into the shop, blew some compressed air and said it was just debris. It continued to get worse and now it is extremely loud, even when not pressing the brakes. Everyone stares in parking lots! I’ve reported it multiple times to the dealer @ 5k miles, 10k, 15k (it was supposed to be fixed), and now at 20k. Toyota keeps denying the repair stating brakes are not under warranty. But if it’s been happening since day 1, they certainly should be. Last update from my dealer was that Toyota is aware of the issue but they don’t have an approved fix for it yet. Meanwhile, another dealer told me they’ve been resurfacing the rotors and replacing the calipers and that fixes the issue (they’ve had a few of these cases). My local dealer is supposed to be getting back to me this week, otherwise I guess I’ll be making that drive to the other dealer an hour away.

To textundra87. Please post if the solution worked. I have exactly the same issue and have been told the same as well-they are aware of the problem and working on a solution.

I ended up going to the other dealer, as mentioned in my previous post, and they determined the driver side rear rotor too was bent, causing the grinding noise. They bent it back, and the grinding has gone away. The squeaking is still slightly there, but it is livable, and it only occurs occasionally. I did also bed in the brakes as suggested by frichco228, and I think that helped a bit.

Tex can you advise me the name of the dealer that said they replaced the calipers and resurfaced the rotors? I would like to call their service manager and confirm the fix so that I could give the info to my dealer. My break squeal is terrible.

Don McGill Toyota in Houston. To clarify, they didn’t actually resurface the rotors on my truck. They identified a bent rotor, and bent it back on my truck (metal on metal grinding is gone, but slight squeaking persists). I still requested the resurface from my local dealer, who put that request in to Toyota Corporate and they denied it again. I called Toyota Corp and they advised there is no fix as of now, and they would not authorize payment until they have an official fix by Toyota Corp. Good luck, keep us posted!

I am guessing they are referring to the brake shield and not the rotor? Don't believe I’ve ever seen the equipment or technique that would be capable of bending the rotor, much less back into spec.

Mine has been making that noise for some time too. I went to a Dallas Cowboys game and when I was leaving the parking lot, everyone around me held their ears. Embarrassing for a new truck. My dealer said it's a known problem for just the new Tundras and Toyota is working on a solution. They also said it seems to go away after a while. I did notice it didn't make the noise this morning so I'm crossing my fingers. Maybe there's just a certain portion of the pad it needs to get through?

Update: rotors were resurfaced at 20k due to bad vibration. The loud brake sound is gone. We’ll see if it comes back.

I bought my 2022 Tundra in July 2023 (2 months ago). Since day one I noticed a very loud noise every time I press the breaks, especially in the mornings or when the truck has been idle for a couple of hours.
Very disappointed. I have a new truck which is not cheap and makes this horrible noise. Not even the old cars in my neighborhood make that noise it is very embarrassing. I went to my dealer in Palm Beach, Florida and they told me " ALL 2022 AND 2023 Toyotas have the same problem, and we don't have a solution yet". They are making us buy shitty trucks and now we have to swallow all these imperfections. Shame on you Toyota. Be aware and don't let any of your friends buy a Tundra unless they want to have this super horrible sound with them everywhere.

I have a 2023 Tundra since Nov 2023. Brakes started squealing in the morning within a month. I took it in to the dealership where they resurfaced front rotors and replace from pads. A month later it (the squeal) returned. I took it back again when My dealer told me the same thing as some say above: “ Toyota knows about it and is working in a fix”. Well that was over 7 months ago and no joy! . Meanwhile , today I call Toyota customer care at 1-800-331-4331 to check on the status of “the fix”and they know nothing about a fix in the works! In fact the customer rep gave me a case number and told me if they get enough complaints they will issue a customer fix! So I encourage anyone having problems to call the 1800 number above. You would think feedback from the dealerships would be enough but apparently not so. I’m furious! You pay this kind of money for a vehicle and get this! As a long time Toyota customer I’m about to proclaim this as my LAST Toyota if a fix doesn’t occur soon. It is quite embarrassing to drive a 60 plus thousand dollar truck amd deal with this nonsense every morning (or even after it sits a while most days) and you would think Toyota would want it fixed for the BAD advertisement prospective customers see and “hear” with their own eyes as I drive by but not so! Signed long time Toyota customer who is disgusted!

    Hi Randy-Ranman

Thank you for your message and thanks for sharing your experience. I will definitely call the number you provided. I think Totoya is laughing on our faces because they should not be selling these expensive trucks with such horrible defect-noise. I mean the old school bus makes a similar noise when breaking. I am not paying 60K to have a truck that makes an old car' s noise. These are beautiful trucks, and it is a lack of respect to treat us like this. I will also contact Consumer Bureau here in Florida to make a complaint. I think you and everyone else should do the same. Issues like this are not solved by a single complaint, they need to hear many people exposing this defect for them to take action. Good luck to you. Jennifer. my email: Jeynnifer9@hotmail.com

I got one of the first Tundras off the lot when they released and have been having these issues since day 1. Dealer won't do a thing about it and is waiting on "a fix". This is by far the most embarrassing vehicle I've ever driven. I literally have had people cover their ears when they are walking on the sidewalk and I am driving by and need to stop.

In the process of cancelling my lease because this is an absolute garbage truck. I have had nothing but issues with it since I have gotten it.

Heard from my Toyota technician that a lot of people with 22 and 23 Tundras are having this issue. I bought my 22 tundra SR5 with 5,000 miles and starting having issue around 10,000. I don’t take the truck off road only street and highway and I don’t brake hard. I would recommend calling Toyota customer service to report this issue so they can come up with a recall. If no one reports it then issue won’t get resolved on Toyotas end

I just bought a certified pre owned 2022 Tundra with 20k miles a month ago and immediately (never drove it in reverse on test drive) started hearing this crazy noise when pressing the brakes in reverse. I mean a loud one where everyone turns because no truck should be making the sound. I assumed it was the brakes so before taking it back to the dealer (dealer is a hour away), and we all know Toyota won’t fix brakes for free, I took it to my buddies shop and he found the problem. Not bad brakes after all, it was a bad wheel hub bearing. I was shocked because I really didn’t hear other sounds until he showed me in the shop. You can only get the part from Toyota but since I’m under warranty he called a service advisor he knew from Toyota and told them the issue and they ordered the new bearing, I went in and they fixed it under warranty, and sure enough no more head turning sound. Just wanted to share this in case this could be anyone else’s problem. I started searching and it appears bad bearings have been a known issue with Toyota. It’s sad Toyota won’t look past the brakes when we assume it is the brakes. They do the bare minimum. I hope you all get your problems squared away. I do love the truck but I really hope this isn’t an ongoing issue down the road.

If the dealer won’t do anything ( a lot won’t do any warranty work since there is no money to be made) just take the wheel off and inspect yourself there are a lot of YouTube videos on how to do brake jobs disc brakes are pretty simple. If there is squeaking/squealing it is usually no/not enough brake grease on the back of pads, debris caught between pad and rotor or rotor not being in good shape

Toyota won’t confirm there is a Toyota service bulletin (TSB) for the brake issue when I call the Toyota consumer care 1-800–331-4331. During my last call (of many) I asked for them to confirm the TSB is in work for me but the senior tier 2 customer care representative basically blew my concerns off and talked around the issue. I finally realized (after another half hour of my life I can’t get back getting no where with Toyota on this issue) to end the conversation especially since she told me she was closing my complaint because “Toyota knows about the problem”. My response to that was I don’t agree with you closing an open complaint when my problem has not been resolved. it’s fine Toyota “knows about the problem” but I want to know what they are doing about it and what is their timeline for a fix. After all I’m coming up on a year and the only thing I have is “the rumor” there is a TSB coming which apparently can’t be confirmed! You see I have a problem with spending over 57 thousand dollars on a vehicle that does this. And it’s more than a squeal. During the Christmas holidays it literally turned heads for a long city block while we were in slow-speed traffic paralleling a holiday display of lights. I finally rolled down my window to apologize and warn others not to buy a 22,23 or even 24 Toyota Tundra because Toyota has no fix for this grinding squeal! And a guy literally yelled back “they don’t have a fix for that? “ I yelled “ YES that is right!” It was hilarious! …as long as you don’t own the Tundra. I literally turned hundreds of heads during that city block! Our back seat passengers were flabbergasted at the problem and the customer experience I have received too. Toyota customer service and communication sucks in 2023/24. A forty year relationship with Toyota is going to end after this truck leaves my driveway, period. On to my state Attorney Generals office/consumer affairs from here. Because this absolutely is ridiculous!

here is a YouTube video of the problem. This isn’t my truck but if I close my eyes I cannot tell the difference most days. In fact if there is a difference mine may be a little worse!

Hey Ranman, sucks you have been having the same issue I have also had and many others have had. Did you happen to read my post? Mine ended up being my driver side front bearing causing and not the brakes after all. I could have sworn it was the brakes and Toyota never looked because I always thought it sounded like brakes not bearings because usually I would hear rattling and other stuff for bearing issues and not brakes but sure enough it was bearings. If it wasn’t for my buddies shop I would not have found that because Toyota never looked for it. Have you had another shop look to confirm your brakes do in fact look good or need to be replaced? If they are good, I really think you could be having the same issue. I was getting the same loud sound and Toyota has been known for bearing issues.

Hey appreciate the response! I will look into that. I guess my problem is why do I have to fix my new truck I just bought? Shouldn’t Toyota be standing behind their product? I even purchased an extended warranty so it would literally be covered for unforeseen problems after the original warranty expired. I am fully capable to do it skill-wise and financially. But again why should I have to? I’ve built an airplane which I have flown for a few years now and regularly do all the maintenance on. In fact I just re-did my brakes on the plane and repacked the main landing gear bearings less than two weeks ago. I was hesitant to open up my new truck because then they could say hey we didn’t work in it so that is the problem. I didn’t want to give them that if this goes to litigation. Again thanks for the reply. And maybe I’ll go back to the dealer and tell them what you have found. You would think Toyota engineers could have figured this out but I guess Toyota engineer ing and customer service is in the decline now.
    Appreciate your input!

I completely agree with you, you shouldn’t have to pay anything for them to fix it. Luckily, since it was a bearing they covered it under warranty where the brakes they said they wouldn’t. Toyota should be doing everything possible to get it fixed and look into everything to make sure it’s fixed. They do the bare minimum instead of going over and beyond. They should have seen your brakes and if they don’t look bad and no problem with rotors, then keep digging, all on their dime. They just don’t like doing all that under warranty work because the service advisor and mechanics gets a flat rate on warranty, where they make more on non-warranty stuff. It is ridiculous though, and very unfortunate because the trucks look great but no one wants one that is so loud when backing up and stepping on the brakes. Mine did that and people would cover their ears. Since fixing the bearing it’s gone and is now the way I thought it would be when buying it. Good luck! Keep us posted.

They said the they can’t do anything about it until Toyota puts up a recall. So please call Toyota customer service recall if you are experiencing this issue!

I have a 2021 Tundra with 18K miles that began doing that same noise when reversing. I think it only does it in cold weather. I called my dealership last week and got the same answer "Toyota is aware of the problem" but no solution yet. I also called Toyota's customer service and reported the problem. Everyone experiencing this just needs to call Toyota so they can put a recall out.

Mine is doing this also. Dealer just resurfaced rotors hopefully it helps. Only an issue in reverse for some reason.
