I have a 21 Tundra SR5 and just hit 55k miles and want to do a drain and fill of my transmission fluid. I am not going to drop the pan. How many quarts of Toyota ATF WS will I need. Any suggestions/tips? Thanks in advance!

I'm preparing to do mine in the next week too for the first time. I've read that 4 quarts is generally enough, but a few people have needed 5-6 qts. I have 6 on hand for when I find the time to do the job myself.

    Welcome to the forum!

Recommend you search this topic. It is the magnifying glass at the top right of the page.

You're on the right path regarding fluid type and your decision not to drop the pan. Advice above abut having 6 qts on hand per drain/fill is solid. Other recommendation is to always crack the fill plug first, then the level check, then the drain just enough so you know they aren't seized. Finally, scan tool to monitor temps, or practice the pin method.

    Good luck

Just did mine two weeks ago and drained right at about 5qts. I’d have 6qts on hand just in case. Mine sat in the garage for over a week before I did it and I lifted the front of the truck a bit as well. Some folks report seeing around 3.75qts.

Odd. I didn't know about the varying amounts of fluid people are reporting.

I myself have never gotten more than four quarts out of mine. On ramps, I get 110 ounces, or 3.4 quarts.

I drain the fluid into this graduated pitcher. It provides a very accurate measurement.

Anyone use the ScanGauge 3 to monitor tranny pan temps when doing the r&r on the tranny fluid?

I’m coming from the Tacoma world so still learning tundras but Toyota sucked at filling the trans on tacos. A lot of them were underfilled from the factory (mine was a quart low when I bought it brand new in 2015). It caused a lot of shifting issues. Nothing serious but you could feel the torque converter engaging more than you should be able to. Sucked in stop and go heavy traffic because it would rev up a bit and then engage. After putting in the proper level, all shifting “issues” (if you can even call them issues) disappeared.

    Too many, but not enough....
I'm assuming the varying amounts drained has to do with how long you let the truck sit before draining. 4 qt seems average. I'll probably let mine sit 4 or 5 days. I'm almost to 30k so I'm coming up soon for first drain and fill.

I heard about that. Fortunately my 2014 had the proper amount. On the Tundra I just replace what I drain. Works fine for me.

Check level at something like 100-111* F iirc.

I'd go ahead and just do a total fluid exchange; you don't need to drop the pan to do it. I've completed it twice and it's not that difficult and it's nice to have the peace of mind that all the fluid is brand new. Probably not for everyone but here is the link the video I followed to do it. You'll need 15 qts, and I have used Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic both times with absolutely no issues at all. Its a fraction of the price of the Toyota WS/
