GAS LEAK - 2022 Tundra Finally Leaked Recall

Just as an aside here folks. If you are getting a part not in answer continually from your dealership call the brand loyalty number and get them to get the parts in. This is not something you want to sit on.

Hey Billy Goat, thanks for this post! I just found this thread after searching around because I had the same issue as you did today. I took my 2023 Tundra SR5 crew cab in this morning for the recall and the dealer did the temp fix on mine (I assume??). 30 minutes later I was pulling into a parking spot and my truck quit running. I tried starting it back up and it would not go, then I smelled gas. I got out and there was a trail of gas behind me and a growing puddle under my truck. I called the dealer, and they sent a tow truck to come get it. They will be looking at mine tomorrow morning. What did the dealer end up doing for your repair?

 

So, the 30 minutes was the time I had driven it after I picked it up from the dealership. This was after they completed the "repair". I actually dropped it off around 8:30 am and it was ready around 2:45 PM.

Forgot to reply about the paperwork question. I was in a hurry when I picked it up and the paperwork wasn't ready yet, so the dealer said they would just mail it out to me. I'll let you know what they say, once I talk with them tomorrow.

 

This seems odd. If they installed the protection kit it shouldn’t get worn in 30 minutes to cause a leak. Feels like they didn’t install it right or didn’t put it back together right. Even if the line had been getting worn the protection should keep it from leaking that quick. Curious if the paperwork shows the protection kit was installed and not just inspected.

 

Good lord, wth is going on out there at Toyota? Insanity.

 

I have a feeling this whole fiasco (temporary/permanent fix nonsense) is going to become a major problem for Toyota. Dropping the fuel tank isn't a trivial thing, if it's like any of the fuel tanks I've dropped from other vehicles. There are numerous fuel and brake line connections that are possible failure points. I'm sure there are also electrical harnesses that have to be disconnected and re-connected too. Each time you mess with those connections, they become more prone to failure. There is also fragile heat shielding that has to be removed and re-installed. And it all has to happen twice per Toyota's bizarre way of thinking.

Maybe I'm jaded from working on old vehicles, but it seems every time I have to tear into something, other unforeseen problems arise. I hope that isn't the case with this recall.

Exactly. Last time I did this (drop a tank) was on a 1994 Chevy S10 and it was a PITA but nowhere near as complicated as this will be. That's why I may wait for the permanent fix and let them have only one chance to screw it up.... unless I get a leak first.

Sounds like the mech didn't install the connection correctly or they just really F***ked up.

 

Working on forklifts for almost 5 years, everything that's jerry rigged from the previous "mechanic" bits the next guy. Too many maintenance guys making temp fixes cost a phenomenal amount of time any money down the road. Red ll antifreeze they put in green, SAS fuse keeps blowing I find the 4th function knob was twisted off because the operator didn't like the little button he had to push to open the clamp so the wires were twisted together and shorting out in the handle.

So, it was the dealership that caused my issue. Turns out they did not seat one of the clamps correctly and the fuel line came loose. Picked the truck up Thursday morning and it has been fine so far.

 

For real?

 

Tech be like "man I can do that fuel line repair way below what toyota pays"
Then he sees the customer going down the road
These techs need to check it twice for fuck sakes!

 

I just came back from my dealer after waiting for the parts to arrive. Sorry, we can't do that recall, your tank is too full(3/4)!! Now I'm suppose to drive around trying to get under 1/4 full hoping the fuel line holds. Live in NH so the bottom will get messy, I hope that's not their next excuse for not doing the recall. It does seem odd that a corporation that has been building vehicles this long needs to do this with a temp fix followed by a permanent fix sometime later.

yup, my dealer cranked mine out like nothing and I had over 1/2 tank almost 3/4

 

Kind of strange too that attitude they have, very defensive. My 2008 is going strong so I didn't need to buy my 21,
I did not want the new version simply because the old tried and true adage plus I am not a turbo person.
If I had bought a 22 and am dealing with what these owners are, I would put the frikken pom poms down.

 

Is this a problem in 2024 models? Do new builds planned for production include mods that fix this problem? Or must I question it at delivery?

EDIT: My dealer reports that this problem on new Tundras in or headed to production is resolved.

 

On Ford Rangers, we used to buzz the 6 bolts holding bed to frame, plus tailight connector and 3 screws on fill pipe. Lift the bed a bit and prop it up. Way faster, and no need to lift truck, drain or disturb anything. Ford fuel sender and/or pump failure was very common. Maybe more difficult on Tundra...

 

Hi, mine just started with the same problem yesterday (2/3/2024). I had made an appointment this past Wednesday to take it in for service and to address the recalls for Monday and of course it happens a couple days before. I noticed it because my truck sputtered when turning it on leaving to work and when leaving work. Stopped by Autozone to check the battery and got a strong scent of gas. When I looked under there was a puddle of gas with a steady drip. Towed it home and will be towing it to the dealership tomorrow. The current list of things needing attention are: gas leak, 2 recalls, rear passenger window is off track after they tried to repair window seals, surging at low speeds, moon roof shakes when closing, and headliner velcro by the moon roof controls isn't sticking.

They have also already had to replace the front camera due to a short, the shift linkage, and a front grill clip. For such a pricey truck this is beyond frustrating. 2022 Tundra Limited with ~26000 miles.

 

Sucks man, the temp fix has been out for a while now , get in asap

 

I took mine in for the 10k service today and they had to order parts. The service manager said they would have them in a few days and they have to order them with a vin number. The appointment person told me they were backordered, when I added the recall to my list of services, and would not be available at today's service, but didn't say how backordered.

 

I was just told you have to have two notices sent to you before they schedule it. I've had one so far. They're metering out parts I guess? Seems like it should be based on odometer reading as that would be a good indicator of possible wear or likelihood of failure

 

This is just my own personal experience thus far with the recall and does not express any of my own opinions. These are just the facts: A few months ago, my wife and I smelled gas really bad in the truck right after I filled up and our newborn baby was in the back. Figured it was just on my shoes or something and it eventually went away. Then I received the two recalls for gas lines. So, recently I took my 2022 TRD OR Limited to Stevinson Toyota West here in Colorado (I had my 2016 Tacoma serviced by them for over 6 years and now my Tundra). They had my truck for 5 hours. When I picked it up, they said that they couldn't do anything but they did diagnose the issue and parts were ordered. They said it's no big deal and just wait until the parts come in. That was two weeks ago. Called my dealer today after hearing about Billygoat's issue and they said there is no timeline for when the parts will be in and that I should drive like normal. They also told me they don't do loaner vehicles. My other concern was parking in the garage and causing potential harm to my family and home. They said it's fine to park in the garage.

Does anyone else have updates around this and do we know if any others have had actual leaks besides Billygoat?

 

Toyota corporate apparently is telling the dealer they will not replace my gas line with the same faulty design + temp fix. They have quoted me "summer 2024" for the new gas line design and got me in a tacoma loaner car. I have started the lemon law process in WA which is 30 days out of service. I would be interested to hear what they told you?

 

The funny thing is I am a "Toyota fanboy" generally. My 05 lx470/land cruiser with 240k miles seems to be built 10x better than this brand-new truck. It seems reasonable to me to expect that the new vehicle should be an improvement over the 20-year-old one...

edit: Interested to hear what the dealership/corporate are telling you about the fix and timeline?

 

My local dealership offered a loaner if I felt "unsafe" driving. I declined, but I also don't keep my truck in a garage. My gravel driveway is already well saturated with gas, oil, and other various fluids from various trucks and equipment.

 

I just had mine done at https://www.pedersentoyota.com/in Fort Collins. They had parts, might be worth a call around to all the dealers to see who has them.

 

UPDATE:

58 days in the shop to get a replacement fuel line with the same design. This one was installed with a wire loom on it as well as what looks like some foam wrapped around in a few spots. According to the dealership, this will still need to be replaced when the new fuel line design comes out.
