I recently purchased a 2024 tundra limited, it has less than 500 miles on it at this point but I’m only seeing 11.8 miles per gallon fuel efficiency. I do have the I force hybrid engine, and have been driving in normal driving mode. I purposely drive it very conservatively and stay out of the turbo boost mode as much as possible but I should be seeing much better mileage as posted by Toyota. This thing was listed at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway, I’m nowhere close to that is something wrong with this engine?

When you look at your total fuel economy there are several settings; Every fill up it can reset or you can look at the total of all miles etc. Ensure that yours is reset after you fill up and it will help give you a more accurate "current" reading. But with 500 miles you may have only filled up once.

I am averaging 17 on my non hybrid and I am regularly in normal mode.

We got in the 14-15 range with our first tank. We are now on our 4th tank and are averaging 16-17. We live in a hilly area though and I’ve been pushing it a bit recently too. We do not have the hybrid version. I think the gas mileage improves over time until about 5,000-10,000 miles.

Well from my experience with 2022 hyibrid TRD 4WD . It takes about 10-12K miles for the engine to break in and get better MPG .
I drive in ECO mode , I have apprx 16K miles and i average around 17.5 around town with limited highway miles day .
On Highway trips I average about the same , but i usually set cruise on average around 78mph.
If i drop speed down to 70 i can get the 20mpg . If you want to get 22 mpg you will drive below 70 on highway .
with the hybrid you will learn around town how to coast and drive to get the hybrid to kick in and get better mileage in town .
this has been my experience with 16 months of ownership

Dealer probably had your truck idling for hours in the bay cleaning and make ready. Reset and see if changed.

I got my '23 in November of '22. I didn't see double digit mpg until probably February of '23. It was also cold that winter, and most of my driving was stop and go in-town stuff. I won't see 20+ mpg unless I'm spending time on the highway and not speeding. My lifetime average sits at 15.9 mpg, which is about the same as I was getting in my 4Runner.

If I make short trips, mostly start and stop around town it can dip to 11-13 for the trip. City as in suburbs and some highway I average 15 most of the time on MY22 4x4. Highway gets 19-20 but need to stay 70 or lower as others have said. It’s a heavy beast. All stock except 235/60/20 all terrain tires. My numbers were a mile or two better before I switched tires.

That's a small tire. Are you sure that isn't a typo?

I'm seeing about the same thing. Freeway under 70 I can do 20+. 75+ like 17. Short trips with some hills, 13.

That looks about right. My lows are offset with long backroads/no stops where I can get 24-27 mpg going 35-45.

Thanks everyone for the input on your gas mileage. I switched over to “tank average” and I like those numbers better. I traded a 2017 Tacoma for the Tundra and was hoping for at least Tacoma averages or better, I guess time will tell. At least someone can sit in the back seat of the Tundra.

Just a little update on our experience. Just filled up again today, switching back to premium to see how it affects anything.
Tank 1: Unk mpg as I don’t know what dealer filled it with
    Tank 2: 17.6mpg on premium
    Tank 3: 16.4mpg on midgrade
    Tank 4: 17.1mpg on midgrade
    Tank 5: pending on premium

I’ll let you guys know what I get on tank 5 with the premium again. Each tank of driving has been pretty much the same driving style all in normal. We have just over 1500 miles now so the engine is just getting broke in. One thing that has irritated us is when the gauge shows 50 miles left, there is actually around 9 gallons still in the tank:(

I live in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania so if you never visited it is built around hills and valleys. I drive almost exclusively in the suburbs and in town with very little interstate cruising.

It’s about 35 city / 65 highway, and there are some good hills since to and from work is near the mountains.

How long do you idle your truck in the morning to warm it up?

It may just be the hills and short trips with stop/go traffic, but if you idle it for several minutes to warm up in the morning, it's getting 0mpg that whole time...

I also need it to be the absolute most comfortable vehicle possible because my sedentary lifestyle has put my body into a constant state of pseudo-hibernation. I abhor discomfort as nature abhors a vacuum. My hips, knees, lower back, and core in general have atrophied to that of someone decades older than me. Bumps on the road make me uncomfortable, as does anything resembling a standard truck "ride" for any length of time. This is unacceptable.

My comfort demands have also rendered completely useless any metric of capability my truck's manufacturer will tout.
Tow 13k lbs? Nope, not remotely possible in reality, because my need for comfort has rendered my truck's frame, suspension, axles, etc completely incapable of carrying the tongue weight that would come with that load (or even one 4k lbs less!).

It sure sucks for other Americans who would sell a kidney for Toyota to offer a Hilux or something that was built for load-bearing capability instead of comfort.

Guess they're stuck going with even bigger trucks. :notsure:

How do you change the reading from average MPG to reading tank MPG?

2023 double cab sr5 now with 7500km on it. No tonneau or cap on it, factory tires at 35psi, regular gas, Eco mode, very conservative driving with no rabbit starts or late braking. Keep dash cluster in the mode where you can see your mpg mileage and I try to keep my white indicator below the average. Fairly flat terrain with 80% driving on secondary roads at 90kph. 20% in town. No prolonged idling ever. Best trip mileage I've had was 10.9 liters per 100 (21.6 us mpg or 25.9 mpg imp) with 450lbs passengers, 350lbs cargo, light tailwind, and gradual down slope trip over about 600km. Day to day average is about 12 liters/100km (19.6 us mpg or 23.5 mpg imp) in summer temps with factory tires. Now that winter is here - average is about 12.7 (18.5 us mpg or 22.2 mpg imp) with snow tires and cold temps. Hoping it gets better as the engine gets worked in. About to do my first oil change.
I miss my old Tacoma that had the 2.4 liter engine in it. Absolutely bomb proof and I got 36mpg. Typical Toyota - as soon as they have a reliable, proven, economical product they stop making it ! They did the same thing with the Echo car (best car I've ever owned by far. Used to get 42mpg in it). They did it again when they stopped making the RN44farm trucks in the 80's (Tacoma frame but it was 3/4 ton and got 35mpg). I cried the day they stopped making them.

403,000 km! Engine compression was still excellent. Still on original clutch ! Too many farts had been drilled into the driver’s seat and the frame finally rusted through.

LOL. 4 steps all around the bed, a tailgate with stairs, with a wet bar, Bose surround sound with disco lighting, Oh, and it folds up and closes automatically. Tool boxes in every body panel, a 7.6L V10 with a 40gal tank, a laptop stand in the cab, massaging seats, and a rifle/shotgun safe under the back seat. Back seats must fold flat to fit a standard sized mattress. LOL

Almost posted this a couple of weeks ago myself. Picked up my 24 Limited early December. First 2 tanks averaged just below 12MPG. Granted I live in CA and take relatively short drives where I am consistently stopping at lights and reaccelerating up / down hills. 1200 miles in and I'm getting 15.8MPG on this current tank. Lifting and putting 35's on come March. Soaking up these MPG's while I can.
