I got a 2009 second gen 4.7 liter with 47k miles. Old man had it before me and couldn’t in and out of his truck. Got it for 14,800. Are these considerably more reliable than the 5.7 liters?? Also came with a ARE colored matched bed coverIMG_1834.jpg

Nice looking truck. Welcome from Texas! I know this is 2nd gen :crapstorm:, but most of the guys in the following thread are running the 4.7 Highest mileage 1st gen tundra | Toyota Tundra Forum (tundras.com)

I'll also leave this info here as it applies to you

You have nothing to worry about. It is Car Wizard approved, and IIRC it is approved as an engine for airplanes.

300 hectares on single tank of kerosene
I know for sure that one guy got 1 million miles on the 4.7, but now that I think about it, the same guy has done it again with the 5.7.

Looks like a really nice truck!

Just be sure to check if the timing belt has been changed. Your mileage is low, but there is an age limit to the belt as well.

Other than that, you should be good to go with regular oil changes.

More maintenance required than a 5.7 but an absolute bulletproof reputation when maintained.

What is the life-span of a timing belt and should I be worried?

Why is it more maintenance?? What do you have to do differently than a 5.7, this is my first tundra so forgive me for my lack of knowledge.

Thanks bro! Its my first tundra. I plan on keeping it for a long time and stay debt free from payments. The 2019-2021 years are my favorite and I want one so bad. A time will come when I can get what I want. I was only 20 when purchased.

    I think it’s 7 years but yep.

ETA 9 years is correct - but I wouldn’t recommend that in AZ or other climates that are hard on belts / rubber.

When you decide to do the timing belt, do the water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt and pulleys at the same time.

I had one, and didnt do the timing belt until 110k, and it was 13yrs old at that point. Im not saying that its okay to space it out that long, but I did and no issue. Mine treated me well minus the air induction pumps, that were replaced via warranty- if yours werenr there are delete kits now however.

I've actually never owned a vehicle with timing belt, but it looks like others have thrown out 7 and 9 years (or 90k).

Look for a sticker under the hood that states when it was last done. If you can't find one, I would looks to do or have the work done ASAP. A snapped or jumped timing belt could damage the engine to the point of requiring replacement. And these engines are very expensive to replace.

Just looked it up the other day out of curiosity - $25k for a 2UZ from Toyota - explains why so much stuff ends up with a LS swap.

You just take all those parts off to do the timing belt so there is not additional labor and the parts are relatively cheap when compared to the labor to get in there when doing the timing belt at 90k miles.

I’ve got everything on the shelf in my garage to do the Sequoia next month.
Radiator hoses, radiator, timing belt, water pump, thermostat.

@FrenchToasty - you still want to supervise when we do the swap? What weekends are good for you in Feb?

The 2019-2021 didn’t come with a transmission oil cooler.

what you really want is a 2018 as it has radar cruise AND a tans oil cooler.

it’s clearly the best year. :D

these parts come in a timing belt change kit together. It’s done every 9 years or 90k miles. It can be done by the average shade tree mechanic. $150-200 in parts. Having it done at a shop runs $1200-1600 or so.
