So I picked up this Used 23 Pro about 3 weeks ago and went into the Toyota dealer today to get my second fob... they come back twenty minutes later saying they cant communicate with the vehicle at all and something is wired into the OBD2 port so they cant program my key.
Come home to find this thing and have no idea what it is. Can anyone tell me what this is? I havent torn apart my dash to find the thing it was connected to yet and im hoping its nothing.20240201_144304.jpg 20240201_144343.jpg

I have never seen anything like that - I wonder if it will communicate now that you removed it. The harness that the purple wire was connected to might have been interrupting the communication.

You can't see each end in your pics, but it just looks like a homemade (or DIY repaired) Male-to-Female OBD II adapter/extension. Though I'm not sure what the 2-wire purple off-shoot connecter is. My guess it's a hot/power for whatever device the adapter was needed for.

It can't be impacting anything since it's not connected to anything. Unplug it, trash it, and move on. Easy peasy.

I’m pretty sure that is the standard government surveillance module. Usually only installed for those who are already considered subversive and a high risk target.
I strongly recommend that you start to keep your truck parked in a large faraday box.

Tell the dealer you found something in the truck and have them tell the old owner to contact you . When he calls say WTF is this ?

Is it for after market powered running boards? I thought at least one of the brands had an adapter like that.

Glad you got it figured out. Funny how different dealers handle stuff like this. My Carista dongle is attached to my OBD port all the time. Dealer never said a word about it when i went in for the 2nd FOB.

On a side note wouldn't (shouldn't?) the dealer have scanned the truck for codes when they took it in on trade?

I rented out a car on Turo for a bit. I'm in some FB groups of hosts sharing information with each other. It was common for hosts to install GPS trackers using the OBD2 port. They would use extenders to tuck it further behind the dash where a guest wouldn't see it. Bouncie was a brand I remember seeing commonly, but there are dozens of variations. The truck could of been rented out on Turo by the last owner, that wouldn't show up on a car fax.
