Why all the long beds?

Current owner of a 2018 CM 1794 and have been considering a 2024 CM 1794. However, virtually every model on the dealer lots have the 6.5 foot bed; would appreciate the extra length but would be a very tight fit in my garage with the longer bed as well as a hassle as a daily driver. Does anyone know why production seems to have shifted to the longer beds? All salesguy could come up with is Toyota has an excess of parts for the longer bed and/or a shortage of parts to build the shorter beds.

LOL... if so, that is the opposite of how it has been for 2 years. Those of us wanting the long bed had slim pickin's for a long time. IMO short beds mean you should just buy an SUV instead. But that is a whole other discussion. ;-)

Now that's 70's thinking - in todays inventory planning/control, heads would roll.

I couldn't imagine having a bed shorter than 6.5. I might as well still be in an SUV with a 5.5..

I can't speak for Toyota, but up here, people use their trucks, and bed space is bed space.

Why has Toyota taken our choices away? Sure I would love the longer bed, just not practical if using my truck as a DD or if I want to park it in my garage. Maybe it is the Toyota gods telling me to keep my gen 2.5:hattip:

I have a 23 1794 with the 5.5 bed and its a pain to park...if not for the cameras you can't see out well enough to judge anything...can't imagine parking or going through a drive through with the 6.5. And the turning radius is a joke. That said parking and getting used to where the truck is in the lane are really my only negatives...truck overall is excellent.

I wanted a 6.5 Crewmax. Wouldn’t fit in my garage. My compromise was a diamondback hd cover so whatever don’t fit in the box can go on top.

The biggest complaint about the 2, 2.5 gen CM was there was no option for the 6.5 bed. I really need the 6.5 bed but had no choice to get one without sacrificing cab room. I have two tall kids and the DC wasn't cutting it interior wise. The CM is awesome for the kids and their friends but I can't use the bed the way I did with my gen 1. The gen 1 - 4 door DC ( gen 1 CM) was right on target. Plenty of interior room and plenty of bed, without really any compromise. So my guess is they (Toyota) made a shit ton of CM with 6.5 beds because of the complaints/demand of previous gens.

You should post what dealer that is that has only 6.5 bed on a crew max... a lot of people are looking for that and they can be hard to find. Thats exactly what I bought and can't imagine not having the extra bed space.

I grew up with 3/4 ton crew cab 8' bed chevys. Drive one of those for a few years, you'll be able to park anywhere in a Tundra after that.

I love it when people refer to the 6.5' bed as the "long" bed. It always makes me chuckle a little bit.

It's not necessarily a Toyota production thing, but a regional demand and allocation thing. That specific dealer probably requests more allocations for long beds based on the regional demands.

You can kind of see trends if you look at dealer stock (for any truck brand) at multiple dealers. Closer to the big cities, the dealers are likely to have very few long bed variations. Once you get to the dealers more out in the sticks, you'll see more long bed configurations.

I specifically wanted a long bed and after driving it, it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. I came from a Tacoma too. The dealer I got mine at only had the one long bed and it sat for about two months before I came along and bought it. After being in the Tacoma with a 5 foot bed, I appreciate all the space of the long bed. But know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Perhaps a Maverick would be better?

The funny thing is I bet 90% of full sized truck owners buy for image when a Maverick would do everything required.

Thread drift: I was watching a youtube video the the cheapest to own vehicles over 10 years. It was based on ownership over how many miles the vehicle would last. I was surprised to see Honda Ridgelines average high mileage when sold was over 200,000.

I went with a short bed only because I wanted it to be easier for my wife to drive too and she hated driving my long bed double cab Tacoma because of its length and turning.

    I wished I had a long bed…. Haha

I dont know how much "image" vs needing it for the suburb life, family hauling/ interior space(car seats, tall people)- home depot runs, vacations, odd moving jobs, toy hauling. Image I guess would be when its going for all the bolt on accessories or splashy trims.

I think the dudes who daily around in 2500 and 3500 are a bit excessive...

Where on earth do you live? Long bed 1794's are unicorns here in SoCal and I would've paid a handsome premium for one! Was told by multiple dealers they don't exist.

She hated how it turned and how you almost had to do a 3 point turn to get in a parking lot. Her dad had a 2015 Tundra and she liked driving it. I wanted a new body style so I ended up with the 24

The trick is to make your truck too tall then your wife will refuse to drive it, then you can get whatever you want. 6.5ft bed is needed for most common lumber duties outside of putting on a contractor bed rack.

LOLing at these half tonner’s getting uppity with their 6.5 bed going on about “doing truck stuff” and shaming crew max guys as “soccer moms”.

Not just "truck stuff". But travel, with gear. You get a CM short bed you can fit 5 or 6 people while at the same time you reduce luggage capacity. Bikes, coolers, suitcases, other toys and such. But big 3 row SUVs have that same problem. They maximize people space but then there is no room for all their gear without adding a bunch of carriers or pulling a trailer. For us, we fully utilize the 6.5 "long" bed when we travel... with only 2 of us and a dog. I can't imagine a family of 5 going anywhere with a 5.5' bed.... except out to dinner.

You’re so right. How did any family travel anywhere before Toyota graced us with a double cab tundra?

No family going anywhere on a road trip in a double cab, trust me... Unless you are munchkins. If we had even one more person, it would have had to be a CM long (6.5') bed... for the gear. But we have aged out of that phase.
