So long story short the dealer called Toyota and they ordered a new transmission for the truck. Transmission was finally located in California and it will be installed by months end. They pulled the trans right away and made sure everything was tight and replaced and noise still occurred. Hopefully the new transmission fixes the issue. It cracks me up that the references on this site talk about only being able to hear it in drive through restaurants…..we really are becoming dumber with every passing year..

Buddy its the effect of the wall amplifying the sound. Not that it only occurs in the drive through lol, thats the only time it’s loud enough to hear in the cab. Good luck with the new transmission though.

anywho, mine still does the ticking almost at 7k miles. Only in Drive, warmed up, and at idle RPM. Throw it in park and it disappears. I got told its normal operating procedure for this transmission :notsure:

Will advise when and if they ever figure out exactly what it is causing the ticking noise; for all those who say it’s normal it isn’t I had them start and run several other new gen tundras and none of them made the same racket. If your truck is making this noise probably an indication that something isn’t quite right. im used to the click clack of the 22r or the up and down idle of the v6 and v8’s with the evap systems on the gm v8 powered tundras. All those noises were normal and the same on most of the vehicles coming from mechanical systems properly working. This was coming from inside a sealed part in the bell housing making a loud enough noise you could hear it anywhere around the truck. It obviously wasn’t normal although I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a common issue….they never should have let people in Alabama start snapping these things together lol

This sound occurs at idle and drive. Good luck with your trans also

I hate to be that guy but id put money on your new trans doing the same thing… two dealers have told me it was SOP for these transmissions.

Thanks for the response, Coop. Funny though, mine only makes the noise while in park and neutral. Dead silent when I put it in reverse or drive. I am about to drop it off with the dealer to do more diagnostics after they spoke with corporate. Did they allow you to keep driving the truck while you are waiting on this new transmission, put you in a rental or? I understand stuff happens, but I am not looking forward to the hassle.

I’m in a rental until they get it fixed. Also to reply to rally we tried to replicate the noise on several other trucks and couldn’t. Only on out of 8 on the lot that had the audible noise from inside the transmission. Ha I just read your earlier message I didn’t actually think I needed to spell it out that they only reason they hear it in a drive through it due to it echoing off a wall……I’ll just reference my earlier statement but anywho they did not want me to drive it because they we worried about the part failing.

Same and same here. No ticking noise but plenty of other things a $80k truck should not, especially from Toyota. 3300 miles and they placed a new 'load adjustment' sticker on the inner panel due to a recall REDUCING total capacity by 32lbs. Now the truck sits at 1298 lbs total passenger and cargo capability!! Lousy.

this is due to dealer added accessories on the truck and toyota has done it on multiple models for years…my tacoma had one on the door sill for my sidesteps. The recall was because the bedliner did not get one of those stickers.

They got every other truck up to operating temp with you there and then tried to replicate the noise? They then put every truck in Drive or neutral? I highly doubt that to be honest. I have two tundra’s in our family both do it, one a ‘23 and one is a ‘24. As i said, both have been to two different dealers and have been told its standard. Not saying it should be, but thats where we are. Highly likely your new transmission ticks too if i were a betting person.

I've been noticing the tick recently. It definitely wasn't always there. The truck ticks in 3s sometimes 5s in drive. I believe it's 2s in reverse and nothing in park. I was backing a trailer up a few weeks ago and the transmission struggled to start the truck moving and the temp shot up to 250 almost immediately I mean almost immediately. Since then I've had a few hard shifts and I feel like the gear changes are slower at low rpms.

I was just scrolling through and found this thread, I will try and get some recordings of the noise to post maybe we can get to the bottom of this.

    To your current tick...
Interesting. A ticking solenoid valve makes the most sense - a nuisance (surely, the trans will not fall off). It could be worse: New Jeep diesels have a known fuel-pump recall, which could be life threatening. But, they haven't designed / released a replacement part yet!

To your 1982 Gen1 truck -- Don't give up on Toyotas...
Didn't they still have a 20R? No wait... the change to 21R was in 1981, and the change to 22R was 1983. And, they should have (but didn't) give the next revision the name 23R for 1985--1994, right?
Everyone wanted the 1977 head because it flowed better with no swirl ports. But you couldn't swap it onto 1985^ 22R's. Also, an 'older' double-roller timing chain kit can be installed onto 1983--1984 blocks. I did this on a 1984 GT-S Coupe. You only need the earlier crank oil-pump drive gear. The 20R/21R/22R(and RE) solid lifter 'tick' ... Classic! You can almost eliminate it with lash of I=0.007" and E=0.011". But, I appreciate the character of my 1985 Celica GT-S Convertible.

Can you help me understand if my ticking is similar to yours? I just purchased this truck brand new over the weekend and it has this weird ticking noise. I dropped it off at for service today and they admitted since it's not throwing any codes they probably won't be able to do anything.

That is exactly how mine sounds. Does it go away in drive and reverse? Mine has been in the shop for 2 1/2 weeks. Still waiting to have something figured out. They have opened a case with Toyota corporate, identified the noise is abnormal (for now anyway, I guess) pinpointed it using a stethoscope and now they have to check the transmission fluid and some other diagnostics. Winter storm closed them down for a few days and now apparently the only tech that can check my transmission fluid is out sick.

so after posting that video, I complained enough for them to actually troubleshoot that rattle. Toyota Corporate is directing to do a transmission replacement so now I am waiting on a transmission that is on national backorder.

Yeah. I got word Thursday that they’re going to replace mine as well. 2 weeks or so to get a transmission, but they said 1-2 days max to install once it comes in.

Mine also ticks and I only hear it while idling in a drive through as others have said. I got a 24' with 1200 miles on it.

I’ve had a lot of vehicles over the years, including 9 trucks: GMC, Chevy, Isuzu and 3 Tundras. One Silverado had 12 recalls in 18 months including the trailering platform, but never a rear diff in 2 months, 1,100 miles of ownership like my 2024 Limited. Otherwise I love the truck. Just hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

at least mine doesn’t “tick” (at least that I know of). I’ll have to listen more whenever I get it back :)

I experienced the same ticking on my truck. Did not hear it on the test drive, heard it a couples day later. Took it back to the dealership after having it for 5 days. Toyota Corp informed them to switch out the transmission. They ordered the part a few days ago but they can't give me an ETA on when they will be receiving it. So frustrating.

It is incredibly frustrating. I am on day 45 of no truck at this point. I was initially told two weeks for the transmission and now they have added two more weeks to the ETA. Who knows when it will actually arrive.

Hi - I'm trying to get some additional information on this. Did your sound like the below video? Also, what color is your truck? From my research, it seemed like a majority of the trucks having this issue are Lunar Rock, but that may be a coincidence.

I believe you are the person who messaged me on facebook a few weeks ago?

I'm going on about a month since my truck has been in the shop, with no ETA in site. I am waiting patiently for them to buy back and replace the truck, although I'm afraid the new one may have the same issue.

I don't hear the ticking that I had. Mine was ticking that came in a series of 3 maybe 5-8 seconds apart. My truck is white.

Gothca, thanks for the reply. I'm about 30 days into waiting for a transmission replacement. Still no ETA. I expect it to be 2-3 months but I'm trying to do a buy-back before then.

200 miles on my truck, only owned it for 28 hours before it when back to service.
