Not really sure the best way to get it home. if you buy out of state from a private seller and want to drive it home ,you can insure the vehicle but cant register it and put plates on it from a different vehicle. I want to go from VA to long island about 5 hour drive got some prices to tow it home 1,500-3,000 bucks. if anybody bought out of state would like to here how it went .

Ask your insurance agent and your state motor vehicle authorities.

I drove home from missouri to Maine 1500 miles no plates no insurance no registration without a single problem. Call your insurance and inform them and you are covered until you get home and register it.
They would not give me transit plates as it wasn’t officially registered yet

I always assumed it was ok as long as you have a bill of sale and call your insurance to let them know before you drive. That's what i did anyway.

A while back I bought a new 24 foot goose neck trailer in Pennsylvania, I live in NY.
The trailer dealer gave me a Pennsylvania Temporary cardboard license plate with proper paper work. I called my insurance company, and they did the paper work over the phone.
Thats my experience, dont know about where you live. Best bet is to call DMV in the state where your buying.

You can't drive it back to New York LEGALLY without some type of license plate. Not sure if you can get a temporary license plate from Virginia DMV from a private sale......give them a call.
God forbid you get into a accident and don't have a temporary license plate, transport plate or a dealer plate the insurance you have won't cover you. Read the small print on your car insurance policy, it will state that the vehicle must be registered according to the laws of the state to be covered, if it's not technically you don't have insurance even though you paid for insurance. Driving in NYS with no plates the vehicle will be impounded and you would be violating the following NYS VTL's,
    401.1a, 306b, 402.4 and 319.1
Do you have a tow vehicle? If so rent a U-Haul trailer and bring it back that way. If not you can rent a truck and trailer from them.
Do you know a car dealer that would lend you a dealer plate?
Good luck with your decision. It's not worth the risk driving it back with no plates.

95% of the time if it’s a private sale the seller forgets to remove the plates so doesn’t matter anyways. I’ve also seen sellers remove the front plate but not the back too.

Hi - recently did this. Give your insurance a heads up. Have copy of bill of sale with you. Take to local DMV when you get home to get tag.

Some questionable advice in here. OP, best to do this legally and not poke at Murphy's Law.

If you're going to drive it, I would contact your local and state purchasing BMV to verify their process/recommendations. Insurance, registration, plates on the vehicle. Or trailer it as @Jim LE 1301 said.

Good luck getting it home, don't forget about us, we'll need an update with pictures!

Maybe that's the case in New York, but my agent here in Colorado says contrary.

I drove through NYS on my way home without plates or registration and had a statie behind me and I wasn’t bothered.
If OP just calls his insurance they will add that VIN to his policy and take off the vehicle he sold. My state would not give me current registration or even transit plates until vehicle was within state borders. New York is communist for sure but don’t really see how they could impound me with title, bill of sale a day prior, and active insurance on my way through to my home state.

    You got lucky.
It will be impounded because it is not registered. NYS law states that a vehicle must be registered to be operated in NY.
I live in NY and I know exactly what I'm stating. I wouldn't risk it in NY that is why I'm telling the OP so he doesn't run into any issues and is aware of the laws.
Every State has different laws, I'm stating that it's illegal in New York.
