Some of our trucks have the 8 gal reserve tank (I believe it’s 8 I’m no expert). How often do you run to 0 miles till empty to actually use some of the reserve tank? Am I an idiot for thinking this might not be a bad thing to do (yes I already know the answer to that question I’m an idiot) thanks in advance

I wouldn't just because I don't need the hassle (or any consequence that may result) if I miscalculate.

Living and working in the Tampa, Fl area, hell no would I let it get that low in gas. Just the idea of running out of gas in the middle of malfunction junction gives me the shivers.

My low fuel light is on now as we speak lol.

I might get to zero miles left once or twice a month.

I don't own a 3rd gen, but gas is gas, and I did one time run down to "refuel" (or something like that) and by the time I got to the gas station and I back calculated when the gas was pumping, I was 20 miles pass the "refuel" notice came up, not the E light, the refuel notice. I have a 38G tank, and that refill was 32.5G, so yea, we have some room.
But will I do it again? No. I rather fill up early and save the worries about getting stuck and all that, this was a one time that just happens to be.

I think I'm at 56 right now, but I generally try not to get below 1/2 tank or so.

Mainly 'cuz I (my wife) don't like the sticker shock of filling the 38 gallon tank from E @ CA gas prices.

Have done this on a few occasions. Filling it up afterwards took 27 gallons and change...

I run zero miles daily. That’s why I have cars and trucks.

in my vehicles I generally fill up when I get under half a tank full. I generally like full tanks just in case. I also generally keep 15 gal of non ethanol fuel in cans for lawn equipment/ cars. I remember a couple of years ago when almost all local gas stations were out. Worst case, my Honda trails will run on a thimble full of fuel.

I'm envious... I can't even get ethanol free at the pump. (So. CA)

If I want to run it in my generator I have to buy it in little cans at Home Depot and it's like $25+ a gallon.

The fuel pump has a fast spinning impeller on an electric motor. These create heat. Heat is the enemy of electronics. The gasoline in the tank acts as a heatsink to cool the pump. Running it out or extremely low hinders the pumps ability to dissipate heat. Food for thought.

    Nitrogen filled tires!
Never. Consequences not worth the risk and there is little to no benefit. 40 miles to empty is as low as I would risk - hopefully getting to a gas station before that. Plan in advance and fill up.

It's just a fuel pump, I'm sure Toyota engineers just threw a random reserve number out there with no consideration at all. Run it to empty every fill up, it's a Toyota so it'll last forever regardless of your abuse.

Never is the best answer. As if things aren't expensive enough on this truck, who needs the hassle of causing potential fuel pump failures due to excessive heat or fuel filter contamination by sucking up possible debris left in the bottom of the tank.

Same here, did go as low as zero miles. But to refuel it only needed like 25-27 gallons, meaning that there was like 5 gallons left in the tank somehow!

So theoretically, once you reach zero miles mark, you may still be able to drive another 90-100 miles if the truck will allow you to use every drop of gas that's left in the tank.

Not that you want to go that low as fuel pump may burn out eventually, but in theory it's possible as the larger tank option is 32 gallons

I have told my wife every day since New Year's Day that I am going to go for a run, and then I don't.

It is by far my longest running joke of the year.

As far as my Toyota tanks, I often run them until "ICURMT" with no ill effects.

yep 40 miles was what the mechanic told me and they had to drop the tank for the recall and i ran it down to 9 miles and then added 2 gallons because it was over 9 miles to the dealer and glad i put those 2 in brought it up to 45 miles so i could use sport mode to check power and had plenty and wasn't hard on pump just for a test

Ran mine till it no longer showed miles to empty and showed refuel now. Still couldn't get 30 gals in the tank. Plenty of fuel in it after 0 miles shown. I prefer it this way.

I fuel up at no less than 1/4 tank, preferably aroun 1/2 tank. This is because I'm a paranoid prepper with too much tinfoil in his hat.

Fuel in the tank cools the pump, so the BAD thing about it is if you repeatedly run to E you are frying your pump. Kinda like death by a 1000 cuts. I replaced 2 fuel pumps on other Toyotas before someone told me that, never replaced one since....I also drilled that into my twins. You be you but remember this!
