I have a 2022 Tundra Limited (Gas) currently.
I am wanting to get a 2024 but the dealership seems to only be getting hybrids with what I want on the truck. My slight concern with the hybrid is one extra item to break on the truck for very little improvement in gas mileage.

    Question:
    1. Is the hybrid going to cost me more in the long run with maintenance?
    2. Is the hybrid equally reliable / longevity compared to the gas version?

Toyota has been making hybrids for a while and eventually the battery pack will have to be replaced down the road. Toyota does provide 10 year/150k mile warranty on battery packs so up until than it should be a nonissue. But you will eventually have the cost of battery replacement to worry about if you keep the truck long enough. As for reliability the truck is only a few years old, too early to tell what long term reliability will be on these trucks. But like stated above Toyota has been making hybrids for a long time and there are plenty that are still on the road with hundreds of thousands of miles on them.

I'm trying to remember from back in 2022, did the hybrid require a different cat cover or all weather floor mats compared to the gas version?

So watching the video , Do all of the hybrids have no storage under the back seat? Is it completely closed off?

That is correct. They do not have any under seat storage. That is where the battery pack and your car battery are located in the hybrid.

Yes. That battery has to die at some time.

Different CAT shield, same floor mats.

If the extra up front cost isn't a concern then you should test drive them. The driving experience on the hybrid with the extra horsepower, torque, stop/start at intersections, etc is different than the gas. How much different and whether its worth the cost is a matter of personal preference. After test driving both, I preferred the hybrid.

If you drive your vehicle more than 10 years then, as others have stated, you will eventually have to replace the battery.

I'm guessing any current replacement of the battery are covered under the warranty. Any idea what it is going to cost for the all hybrids when they turn 10 years old?

There are allegedly older Prius taxis still running around bigger cities with over 600k miles on the original hybrid battery. Toyota still uses old (read: longer lived) battery tech. I wouldn't worry about having to replace it any time soon.

That said, the Tundra hybrid doesn't offset its own cost over time anywhere near like a Prius does. Don't buy the hybrid because you think it will be more economical.

Not much really. There is a company here in Tampa that got in on buying up older Hybrids, repairing, updating or replacing the batteries to turn a profit on reasonably priced used ones.

    https://www.tampahybrids.com/

There also is a great after market support for those batteries if they go bad. There are many Toyota Hybrids still going after 200,000 miles on the original battery. This one is $1,924 with a life time guarantee.

    https://greenbeanbattery.com/produc...BjcaWxi2E07w2yNn_atfGHnbCWRSzHDhoCjyAQAvD_BwE

The average battery life of a Toyota Prius is 8-10 years or around 150,000 miles. Regarding battery life, the Prius is one of the most reliable cars on the road. The hybrid battery is designed to maintain its charge over the car's life and should last as long as the car itself.Mar 6, 2023

https://exclusivelyhybrid.com/how-l...verage battery life of,long as the car itself.

Can you tell I have done the research because I have owned 4 Toyota Hybrids?

Congrats on the new 2024 and I had the same questions you did on which engine to go with and still need to get out and test them both to decide which one I want if any.

It looks like the advantage of the hybrid for a truck is for better towing. Unless you drive in bumper to bumper, lots of stopping traffic (for brake regen of battery) or tow often, not a huge advantage for the hybrid over non.

We have been programmed to hear hybrid and think great gas mileage. Not the case in the Tundra.

this Hybrid system is designed for towing and the extra power to get up to speed while merging on a interstate ramp. It is not designed to return vastly superior mpg. I like the added power of the hybrid system but it could be over kill on a every day truck.

Con: no storage under rear seat, (I really like having some gear under the seat), extra cost for little improvement in gas milage.
Pros: it seems to little to no of the throttle lag that my gas version had. seems like a smoother ride. slightly better MPG but not worth the cost

All the other pros on this new one are more due to the upgrades rather than it actually being a hybrid. My 22 TUNDRA did not have the panoramic camera view and I got the nightshade version for 2024. The chrome drove me crazy on my 22 version and the night shade mostly fixed that.

Yeah when I think of moving to the Tundra that under seat rear storage does bug me a bit. I don't have much under rear seat of current F150 but I do have enough so if I do move to Tundra and go with hybrid I will have to get used to that.

Since I haven't looked one over yet is there any storage behind the rear seat on Tundra? Maybe room enough for a bag with stuff in it or No?

Cool your liking the new hybrid.

No storage in the Hybrid under seats or behind the seats. You can do a storage bin in the back trunk area.

I have a little storage behind the passenger side back seat. Enough that I put a couple of tie down straps , a jacket, and my jump starter pack (the size of maybe 3 iPhones stacked together. ). These are basically the items I have used 95% of the time in the past that i kept in my storage bin under the seat.

since I also have the JBL audio package I do not have storage the driver side rear seat. If you do not have the JBL audio package you will have a little extra storage on that side also.

I might look around and see about getting a small compact soft tool bag to keep a few tools to always have with me in the truck that will also fit behind the rear seat.

This isn't quite true. There's some storage behind the passenger and middle back seat. Actually perfectly sized for ammo cans so I keep my ratchet straps and other odds and ends in them and easily accessible behind the rear seat.

Does the hybrid take away from your cargo capacity?

Yes and no. The GVWR for the hybrid trucks is much higher. I saw a crewmax hybrid with the 6.5’ bed that has a GVWR of 7750 lb. For reference, most other Tundras’ GVWR are around the 7200 lb mark. That same truck’s payload rating was 1390 lb. If it didn’t have 550 extra lbs of room to reach GVWR, its payload would’ve been 840 lb.

So, yes, it reduces capacity in the sense that it makes the truck quite a bit heavier, but also no because Toyota rates the GVWR higher to (mostly) make up for it. It still doesn’t quite have the payload capacity of a lesser optioned truck.

I have no idea how it would have 10 lbs more cargo capacity than my truck crewmax 5.7 without a sunroof and gas only.

Yeah lots of us expected competitive payload with the 3rd gen after 15 years of it being the #2 complaint of the 2nd gen, but here we are.

Well, it is so softly sprung that it rides great, so I am adding Timbrens because, as you know 600-700lbs of tongue weight drops the back like a rock.

From reading all the comments, generally, I think I do not see a Tundra hybrid owner regret that they have the hybrid model. Looking forward to getting mine next week.

If money is no object, I would get one immediately. Plenty of storage solutions like the swing cases to hold tools and stuff. All the power and torque must be glorious.
