In the 2010’s the moly was higher on Toyota oil.

Whatever this forum told me to do
I kinda understand the moly love

but changing oil at 5k renders all that blather mute

I ran Kirkland 5w-30 for 5k and blackstone saw near zero wear metals.
    90k miles on truck

tough to sell me on expensive oil.

    facts are hard to argue.

They switched to a different, more effective moly additive, it does not require as much content like old additive did. Pretty much all modern oils with moly have it around that number.

When and what is it called? Because I talked to one of the blackstone chemists and he said without a doubt Toyota oils have the highest moly content of all the oils they test. The second being redline. And this conversation was a week ago.

Id pretty much agree with this statement. Frequent changes are the best thing you can do.

One possible is trinuclear moly. Mobil or one of the additive companies found it more effective than regular moly, and not as much was required.

In the beginning of 2010s. The new stuff is called "tri-nuclear organic moly".

Hmm….I find that suspect if this oil tested in 2018 shows a drastic difference.

Just because the chemistry is available, doesn't mean the oil blender for Toyota oil has to use it.

Over the past few years, oil formulations have changed due to API moving from SN to SN Plus and now SP.

Elaborate because that makes no sense if your saying the blender can blend the oil however they want if Toyota has a specific formula they require.

    How about this:

Just because the chemistry is available, doesn't mean that Toyota will specify its use. If Toyota leaves the additive chemistry specifics to the oil blender, the blender is not required to use a particular chemistry just because it is available.

We don't know what parameters that Toyota requires for its bottled engine oil. It could be a very elaborate specification, or it may be driven by cost.

Gotcha makes sense, but wouldn’t they want a uniform quantity for use in all vehicles for all additives. Just saying for example say they start having a problem with pre-ignition from the higher compression turbo engine's not liking some additives. Ford actually had this issue in the eco boost when it first came out and they changed the oil additives to address it because the low tension rings were letting enough oil by for the additives to actually make a difference in combustion. I’m just wondering if Toyota hasn’t done the same thing now that they have gone to mostly turbos in their new line ups. And the new formula is still good enough for the older vehicles or at least they will claim that. Just a thought. I have a sample at blackstone being tested but they are back logged 2 months I guess.

That's the idea with API SP rating. Its supposed to cover for the newer vehicles where pre-ignition is a concern, as well as all other engines.

Don't get too caught up on what metallic additives are in an engine oil. There are many additive packages that have no metallic components, so those will not show up on a spectrographic analysis by Blackstone.

That Makes sense. And I change it every 5,000 miles so as long as it’s any quality oil it’s fine. I’m just kinda miffed if I was buying that expensive Toyota oil thinking it has all this moly when it doesn’t. It would make sense though since I noticed my last oil change of Toyota oil the engine was louder. So I changed to 0w-30, They probably did change the formula.

    I don't disagree.

Valvoline Extended Protection has higher than average moly content. I'm using the 5W-30 version in my 5.7 now. It runs pretty quiet.

I will use Honda oil for my Honda ATV's and Yamaha oil for the Yammy jet ski's but for the trucks I use Castrol GTX or Kirkland 5-30 and always change around 4K, 5K max. I have never in my life bought Toyota motor oil. Filters yes but not oil.
My old cars get different oil all together regarding zinc content.

at ~5k mile intervals....Amsoil & Kirklands look STAGGERINGLY similar.

both brands have very very low wear metals.

Also going to remind everyone, that the ICP testing technique does not ‘see’ metal particles larger than 5 microns, that can also freely move through any oil filter (that captures particles of 25 microns or larger).

Hella expensive for 4 quarts of oil. I started out using the signature series but switched after a few OCIs. Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w-30, 3pk of 5q right from Amazon.

Edit- that said, I do like other amsoil products for other things so I still have a membership.
