Hi folks, recently installed a Toyota OEM cover for my TRD pro PT954-34223 and I am having a hard time with the tailgate not opening. I pushed the cover all the way forward to the cab and it’s still getting stuck. Have to pull on the tailgate for it to open. Any ideas why it’s getting stuck?

Lift the cover a little bit and that should release some of the tension on the tailgate.

To seal or not to seal is the question.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
Do you want water entering or not?

All the videos I’ve seen don’t seem to have this issue.

Mine ( Toyota OEM ) you can open with 1 hand, or push the button on the light and it just falls open?

Yes, this is what I’m trying to achieve but I can’t figure out what the issue is.

When closed, is the top of the tailgate flush with the top of the side rails of the bed?

Post a few pics of the rear corners of the bed, with the cover open and closed.

This happens to me now that it is winter, the tailgate is freezing to the cover. What climate are you in?

Modified exterior to have same look as the Capstone. Take off 22" oem Capstone wheels and new stock tires. Switched grill and lower grill and camera to Capstone series. Ordered body match painted grill surround. Had lower bumper and fender flairs painted body match. Ordered body match painted rear bumper caps. Carbon ceramic tint added. OEM tonneau cover added. Really like the Capstone look but didn't need a hybrid nor did I like the interior of the Capstone or the extra cost.
I just installed an OEM Tonneau cover and have it pushed as far toward the cab as possible. The auto tailgate drop will not work. I have to assist the tailgate to get it to drop. The tailgate is sticking on the cover. As of now I'm not sure why. Any help is appreciated.

Update: I removed the cover to confirm it was pushed as far as possible to the cab, it was. I then reapplied the cover, it continued to stick when trying to drop the tailgate. I then sprayed the tailgate locking mechanism with WD40. I then applied a silicone spray to the rubber weather strip under the back of the cover. The tailgate now drop's perfect with no issues.

That’s a nice tight seal. If you want it loose enough for the gate to pop open it will leak along the edge. Your choice.

I am purchasing this item with my new truck. Is it worth the $350 the dealer is charging for the install?

Pressing the button a second time and mine would drop. Then added silicon spray and it drops the first time now

That all depends on how busy you are and what your time is worth. I thought the install was pretty easy, and hour or two at most.

I just wanted to bump this and give a +1 on the silicon spray. I just installed an EGR RollTrac cover and was having to push the release button twice on the tailgate (and it would not drop from the fob or the taillight button). But a quick blast with silicon spray along the seals freed things up and it will now drop and open easily. I don't think this impacts the water resistance of the seal... if anything the silicon spray should prolong the life of the seals (I think).

Does the factory cover easily come off the truck as simply as it folds up? I’m not crazy about folding it up against the cab for big items when I need to do that. Just curious.

I had that same concern so I put it up and drove 80 MPH for about 2.5 hours and it didn't budge. Wanted to know it would stay attached before I had a load of something in the back

Silicon should be fine for the gasket, just dont huff it. It’s the secret sauce here for door gaskets if the cold freezes them closed. It chases the water away.

If it's a bakflip then it should have a rod on either side to hold it open, against the back window, it also has a soft rubber bumper that holds it from hitting the back of the truck. If you don't need the entire bed, you can leave the last section and the folded sections will clip onto the last to keep them from flipping up. I had a soft tonneau cover for years that I thought worked well, until the velcro wore out and I couldn't keep it secured in any amount of wind. Thought I would hate a hard folding cover but after having one for years now would never go back to a soft. They work well.

I don't believe there is an easy way to remove the cover and don't think it's necessary.

Not sure about the factory tonno, but the Mx4 bakflip can come off, two carriage bolts in the most forward section go through a plate and have threaded knobs on the inside. Just unscrew those and off she goes. Last I saw the factory tonno looked like a clone of the bakflip or vise versa

If it's a Bakflip (which I' believe the OEM are) there's two knobs underneath. Super easy to remove the whole cover... probably 5 minutes

I’m learning to love it as well. I had a roll up cover that I thought was perfect and easy and I wasn’t thrilled that this truck came with a $1300 hard fold but I think I will be loving it in time and it seems like my stuff will be totally dry

Plus I have moved some larger items that wouldn't fit easily in the bed on top of the cover, could never do that with a roll up.
