Ran across that yesterday. Interesting interview with one of the lead designers. I’m tempted to download the technical paper just for fun - not that I’d understand it all, but it would be an interesting read.

Very interesting.. thank you for sharing ! One of the reasons I’m hardcore Toyota and have been for many years is for in depth technical reasons and out of the box thinking concerning their development and design process. I think the main bearing issue is probably not really an issue considering the rarity of occurrence… spinning a main bearing
I ran up to visit with my mom yesterday and did about 110 mi round trip. I drive my non hybrid very little since new, but I’m always thoroughly impressed by the extreme low end power of this motor. From right off idle it pulls like a freight train.

One is too many for me - they have 3 examples - in one shop.

I would be lying if I said I didn't think about it from time to time. Interesting that they clearly attempted to make it stronger but are still having issues. Not just in the tundra but all vehicles with it.

WOW, this guy goes into some great detail!....I trust Toyota WAAYYYY more than Ford to get this right..... Has anyone compared the 3.5 TT Ecoboost engine to what Toyota did different in the 3.5 TT iForce engine??.. Would be an interesting debate for sure regarding the long term reliability.

Yes that would be interesting - I don't (and won't) buy Fords (though I think their diesels are OK) but I've seen more than one auto rebuilder show pay $10-12K for some old truck just to get the ecotech v6tt engine - hmmmm

You say this as if Ford has not had the 3.5L Ecoboost in the F150 for 14 years now and not have major bottom end failures.

That was specifically the hybrid powertrain(AKA the Powerboost), not the Ecoboost. You do realize that the 3.5L Ecoboost was already in production in cars for 3 years and the F150 for 1 year before they ever formed a partnership:

"A partnership opportunity with Ford took shape and in August of 2011, Ford and Toyota triumphantly announced a collaboration to develop a new hybrid system for light trucks and SUVs."

Ironically, the Powerboost seems to be a far better system all around.

Cam phasers dont catastrophically fail and take out the motor. I know people that drove many thousands of miles on bad phasers.

Also, I didnt know phasers were in the bottom end.

Ford also had the Cam Phaser issue pretty much taken care of by around this far into the Gen 2 3.5L Ecoboosts lifecycle. 2019(2 years into the Gen 2) they were putting in the updated Phaser in the trucks at the factory and installing them as part of the recalls.

None of this really checks out though. The Ecoboost has been around in at least concept since 2007. It's also based on the Duratec from the 90's. The Toyota / Ford failed partnership was more like 2010-2013. And they were looking at building hybrids together, not building an engine together.

He really does do an awesome job in all of his videos. I love his videos on the GX/4Runner suspension travel and extended travel shocks. He actually has it on a lift and cycles the suspension without springs, checks the CV's for binding, takes measurements, etc. Tells us that the OEM Toyota bump stops limit uptravel by 1.5" or something crazy.
