Hello. I'm brand new to Toyota and the Tundra. I like the truck overall but it is a huge change from what I'm I used to. One thing that's bothering me, is the inconsistent fan speed in the vented seats. The fans respond to the setting adjustment (button that controls high/low/med.) But within those settings there is still a lot of fluctuations in the fan speed/noise. They're pretty loud so it's really obvious. I called the dealer and said it's normal. I'm not really sure what I expected them to say. I thought maybe I could link the fluctuations in the volt meter to the fluctuations in the fan noise but that doesn't always line up either. Anyway, just curious is anyone else is experiencing this, if it really is normal, or if there's an issue. It's incredibly annoying to constantly hear the fan run up and down. Thanks!

I've noticed that as well. Ventilation fan speeds seem to correspond to system voltage which usually varies from float charge voltage during cruising speed or acceleration, then a increased voltage during deceleration which is normal for the gen 3's.

Yes, if you are running other voltage draws like your AC it definitely makes a difference.

Hmm...it's pretty annoying. Maybe I'll get used to it. Is there a way to make the alt run constantly like older models? Maybe that would help?

hope it works...worked on my GM back in the day. That or turning on the defrost or high beams defaulted the alternator to 14v

Is that supposed to be a fuel mileage gimmick, not having it run all the time? It seems like with all the electrical draw in newer vehicles you want it going.

Probably. No need for additional drag if the extra juice isnt needed?

You can thank epa for that lol. If you have an OBD reader look at battery current and voltage. Around cruising speed my draw is -2 amps at ~12V when I let off it's 14V and + 50-60 amps.

On low voltage "mode" it doesn't discharge the battery, but just doesn't charge it. It's basically a float charge voltage. The engine management system does monitor battery overall state of charge percentage and if needed will bump up system voltage to recharge it for a period. At this time you will also get a notice in the cluster stating auto stop is not available, battery charging etc.

But should that effect the operation of equipment in truck? I know fans aren't fancy electronics, but I'd hate to think that some of sensitive electronics weren't getting consistent voltage. Look, if fans blowing up and down is my biggest problem, I'm doing just fine, but I'd like everything the way I like it if possible. I appreciate everyone's input.

I have the same thing on my 24. It is rather annoying. Wish they could just have a constant speed. Other manufacturers do it.

I’m a fan (no pun, really!) of the seat fans. If I had to complain it’s louder than one would think it needs to be for the force generated.

I haven't noticed a change in my fan speed when using the ventilated seats. Either my truck isn't doing it or I'm a moron, but it seems consistent to me.
