Poor man’s intake. Installed AFE Prodry air filters and removed the carbon mesh at the bottom of the air boxes. At 600 miles took about an hour drive and got 20.5 mpgs. Hard to tell if there was any more turbo noise since the radio was on. Haven’t romped on it yet since it’s still a baby, lol. 24 SR5 4x4.

is it easy to remove and is it only there for sound dampening?

Easy...its plastic welded in place in 3 or 4 spots...so just drill that out and then remove the mesh/bag. I cant tell you if its emissions related...but it does provide sound deadening. I had one guy argue its an air straightener, but thats not the case here as air doesnt pass through the mesh/bag.

I’ll have to try it without the radio on.

 never thought of just yanking it off. Did it break or just came off those plastic welded spots?

That vapor barrier padding is just something for the rats to chew on. Remove it if it’s too chewed up and install rat barrier in the snorkels. Super easy to do. Theres a space for it designed in almost like Toyota planned for it. 15 mins per side and a couple bucks.

charcoal carbon and cotton gauze or whatever rats ate mine at the dealer so replaced under warranty...ours aren't in the path of airflow to the turbos so really no benefit to removing performance wise just there to catch any fuel vapor creeping back towards the inlet...in many cars they are in the direct intake path and do create a restriction...screens are a good idea a little finer mesh would make a good rock guard for radiators and intercoolers

The air boxes are just held in on rubber grommets. Just pull up and they pop right off the steel posts. The snorkel part is two pieces snapped together with easily separated tabs. Just work your way around one at a time. In the joint between the two parts there’s a perfect indented tray to hold the screen. (Like Toyo designed for it) Cut screen to drop in and then just snap the parts back together. Easy. *You could use 1/4” screen if mice are your issue. Mine are fat rats and 1/2” will stop them.

It catches gasoline and other PCV vapors that can leak out the intake when you shut the truck off.

I also tried this. There’s a slight favorable noise increase without the mesh padding and stock intakes with trd filters. Nowhere near the AFE for example, but it’s certainly better than bone stock. I like it.
