I just hit 5,000 miles this morning. I have ToyotaCare and bought the extended warranty (10y/125,000 miles). I want this truck to run for as long as possible. Should I schedule an oil change for this week (if not, then when?) and any other services I should be getting? Would I be expected to pay out of pocket for a 5k oil change. Thank you in advance. I'm slammed this week with patients and I've got a second job in the evenings. I should've had this all figured out before I hit 5,000 miles.

Change your oil asap. Generally speaking, Turbocharged vehicles break down oil faster than N/A vehicles due to the excess heat from turbochargers. You can use your Toyota care early, at least I did.

Just the oil change and personally I rotate and balance tires every 5k miles, same as oil change frequency. Tires last significantly longer doing so.

If you have Toyota Care then you can convince your service advisor to apply the 10k OC if you don't wanna pay now. I stick to 5k OCI and my oil looks beat to hell every time on my commute my oil temp gets to 212F. Minimum you need is tire rotation and oil filter and fluid change. See the attached PDF it could come in handy in the future.

Last dealer overfilled oil but this is my oil at 25k miles last changed at 20k.

Good deal. I've set an appointment for Friday at 3:30. Looks like I need an oil change, filter change, and tire rotation. Once my 2 years of Toyota care is finished, can I maintain my warranty with doing my oil changes? I don't want to do anything to jeopardize the extended warranty. Absolutely love this truck, but terrified of an expensive engine failure that I'd have to pay out of pocket.

I had to force a service adviser to do a 10k at 5k miles as well.

You have 10 year/125,000 miles Toyota backed warranty. You shouldn't have to worry about it. Go by the owner's manual and document that you followed it.

Just ask them to take the debris out of the motor during this one and you are good to go! J/K.

Doesn't your Toyota Care include the oil change and tire rotation at first 5k miles at no charge. Air filters are extra.

Have them absolutely change it now. They'll do it every 10k per the new parameters, but I would get familiar with how to do it yourself and change it every 5k. It's not hard, and oil is cheap compared to your motor. I write on my receipts when I buy oil and filters and what mileage they were used for and put everything in my truck's service folder. That way you have your proof that you can use to establish the oil was changed and when (for any questions if warranty issues should arise). If you want to keep the truck running a long time, change the oil often. There was never a case of too clean of oil causing damage to a motor, but there sure are cases of the opposite!!! Good luck. And rotate tires every time you change the oil (5k)

If you want to keep it long term, this is good.

If you flip them every 3 to 4 years for the latest and greatest, do what Toyota expects.

On a side note as someone who looks at way too many used vehicles, I wouldn't buy one unless I see 5,000 mile or earlier documented oil changes.

I'm going to take backlash on this, but break-in changes I believe are a must. For an easy extra if you can do it yourself as its incredibly easy maintenance is the rear differential. Throughout this forum you will see changes done anywhere from 1000 - 100,000 miles and they all have the same response on how dirty the rear differential oil is and the magnetic plug is covered in debris. Then when the change is done again in 30,000 miles, they can't believe how clean it is. The vast majority of the debris occurred in the first couple of thousand miles and in my opinion it's nice to get it out of there. I guarantee you will freak at how dirty your oil and plug are in a brand new truck but then wait three more years and do it again and it will be nowhere near as dirty. I would do all your gear oils but if you're just looking for an easy bit of maintenance the rear differential is easy and takes the brunt of abuse.

At 5,000 miles I had my 3rd set of oil in mine. Brainiacs on this forum made fun of me for it.

I got suckered in the up to 85K maintenance plan. So my plan is to do the 5K oil change myself. Take it in so Toyota can do their 5K stuff. 10K let the dealer do it.

I’ve done this move as well for vehicles that came with oil changes at ridiculous intervals. Every so often I used to bring them in just so there’s some documentation if I ever sold the car.

Tell the dealer your driving qualifies as rough or severe service. Since I tow a lot the dealer was forced to do my 10K service at 5K. You're getting the same amount of freebees but using them up in half the miles.

Go a step further and take a picture of your receipts and make a folder for them. The receipts nowadays can get washed out in heat and can't be read.

I have a digital album of everything too! Lol
It's easy to reference quickly and the paper folder is the hard evidence! I update the oil changes and rotations on my Carfax too. That way is it on the report should someone pull it.

Dealer reached out to me to schedule first service at 5,000 miles or 6 months. Since I had rear differential replaced under warranty at 1,100 miles had them change rear differential fluid along with oil and filter even though my odometer was only 2,400 miles. Rear differential fluid was handled under warranty and oil/filter charged to 10,000 mile service. No hassle from Service Advisor.

Best news was no metal filings!

Yeah i buy my oil off Amazon so DL the reciepts into google drive and have a google sheet to keep tabs on all "stuff" Just found out about the Carfax stuff as well so will add that to the endless updating.

The oil changes arent awful to DIY- especially with a fumoto valve.

If you want extra nerd points send out a sample to Blackstone Labs or some other company for testing. Doesnt hurt and gives an idea of what is happening "in there"
