Never even considered a Tesla for a travel vehicle. Once we get to a final destination...a Tesla is a very good possibility.

Looking at the Plaid, I was surprised how affordable a slightly used one is. Aren't these cars like 110-130k new? Looks like the average is around 65-73k for a low mileage 21-23.

    IMG_4819.png IMG_4817.png

One of my friends and local neighbors here has a Tesla Y that he road tripped to Orlando to meet his family. He won't do that again and almost had to be towed twice (down to 1%). Was it cheaper to drive? Yes. Was it convenient? No. He wished he had taken the Ram diesel. Now they love it in CO except the winter and going skiing. Other than that they Rave about it non stop.

The Tesla just isn't for us right now for a plethora of reasons:

-I don't have room to install a level 2 charger in my garage right now and I have a 200A service. We need to install a junction box and another service to a full panel if we want to do any more upgrades. Since we do not want to stay in CO, the investment to accomplish this isn't worth it to us.

Now if I could use my welding outlet in the garage (60A) and just plug a Tesla in...that would be amazing.

    - Long distance driving. As SC's become more available this might not be a problem. As stated before, my friend almost was left on the side of the road. He said getting an EV with 300+ mile range would be the best way to go.

    - I know...here it goes. Battery replacement costs with a twist. The plaid will cost 20k after all said and done. Which I don't feel that is "bad" after how long the average one goes. How much does most modern V8/6 motor replacements cost when all said and done? Not far off. So I find the Tesla a better value than other EVs. I'll explain. One of my best friends has a Jaguar SUV EV. They have a good warranty and been treated well by Jaguar. They have a battery problem that needs repaired. The battery is 44,000 dollars. This is where Tesla has excelled or "gone plaid" past the competition.

My kids are not short, so that could be an issue. In our last trip to MT a CT5 Blackwing parked next to us at the hotel. That car has plenty of room out back.

We enjoy our full sized truck for travel. Space is never an issue. Might be looking in the wrong direction.

What? The model S looks roomy. That is surprising to hear you say the back seat is cramped.

Well crap. The wife sat down with me the other day with some concerns. I have been chatting about traveling and going places (maybe a little too much) and the kids don't want to travel in a vehicle for vacations. To be honest the wife doesn't either. She recommended that I get a vehicle for my enjoyment, not theirs.

I should ban all electronics in the vehicles. My kids have missed complete states due to devices or just sleeping. They miss so much. I am a driver and enjoy the experience...

    Well allrighty then. Game on.

I guess I would be appreciative of them shooting straight before the transaction happens, but I would still have a hard time w/this...

Growing up, travel in the vehicle meant freedom; stop when you want, see what you want, snack when you want, and most importantly see not just the destination but everything along the way. My dad was good about not just grinding out miles, but trying to give us an experience along the way. Our last big road trip, we drove up through Canada and then took a ferry from Price Rupert into Alaska.... I was 16 and did NOT want to go, because I wanted to stay home by myself and enjoy a few weeks of being a HS kid w/no parents. Obviously, I was not allowed to do this, and after a couple of days of protest, I really started to enjoy the trip. Ultimately, it is one that I still remember and think about to this day.

Younger generations just don't seem to have the same patience to sit in a vehicle for long road trips anymore... :(

I chose a good one....that's for sure. I haven't went out rock crawling in a long time. It will be 3 years come this Oct. I love it, but for some reason the group of guys have just not gone or phased out of this hobby. This winter I will most likely finish up the small items left to do on the crawler and then sell. Might put the LS motor in, but we will see about timelines. For some reason I have just taken on way too many projects or repairs (think last years hail storm I'm still dealing with now).

Road racing is a hoot and wouldn't mind getting back into it. I went down to Big Bend with a few guys a while back and had a blast. The first year you have to stay under 120 mph average for the race. Then the next year(s) you can bump up to grand sport division, then unlimited. If you have ever went 120 mph constant for 60 miles it's hard to explain...but going 75 mph feels like you are in a school zone.

    This does change the search....:D

I agree. Some of the best memories as a kid was the experience getting to the destination. One of my military buddies and I were taking about this very thing tonight. We wouldn't mind doing the highway 1/101 Pacific coast run again. Take a few weeks and blow a bunch of cash.

This 22 Frontier is my retirement vehicle. It's been great and for the price point with what you get, now having driven it over 30K miles, it's hard to do better IMHO. I was asked if I wanted to check out one of the last Titan SV gasser's my dealer will ever get. I always found them to be a bit off when it came to looks but not any more. There's a new first place, but won't get into that. I took a test drive and quite frankly was impressed. Nissan's attempt with the Cummins version wasn't great, but at least they tried. This Titan gasser is the real deal. I don't want or need a fullsize truck, but this Titan almost became my last truck. 3% and 43K with discounts. In light of things, the NA 400 HP Titan V8 has been reliable and would be my fullsize choice now since production stops sometime this summer which is now upon us.

    Could get sporty.

Even though I have my LX450 which is set up for off-roading/expedition travel it needs a lot of TLC. My buddy and I (I’m recently retired) we’re supposed to travel around with his FJ Cruiser, but every year, he had excuses not to retire. So been questioning about keeping it. Almost got into a 18 Tundra Platinum last year, but pulled out of the deal due to crazy interest rates.
Was always a fan of “convertible” type trucks, and many moons ago had a 73 and 74 Ford Bronco. In 2020, I purchased a 79 IH Traveler, but it became a frame off, 5.3/4L60 swap, rotisserie build, and I just didn’t have the time, so sold it.
I would really like to get an early K5 Blazer with the full removable top, but prices are just insane. Still might get one as a “project” if I sell my LX. I also have a “speedster” project that I’ve been chipping away at since 2018. It’s based on this, and it would be cool to travel NA to attend events pulling it with a K5. Lol! Dreaming…

We have had a zero electronics policy on roadtrips since the kiddo was old enough to hold one. We have done a lot of US roadtrips (overland type travel) and besides a 4hr traffic jam on the way back from NM a few years ago it has worked well. Hard to go back probably though once it starts.
I retired early last year and we mapped out our travel plans, it is good to be on the same page. I ended up selling the tundra because our focus was international travel (we are road tripping England as I type this). So as you budget and make considerations, I would weigh that for finance purposes too if that is a consideration. (If you haven’t)

And to be fair… IMO the driver always enjoys the road trip more than the passenger lol

I don’t actually miss the tundra all that much. Seeing the world has been an incredible experience. Even with my love of driving it has been well worth the trade off!

I like the Shelby of all these options. However, no matter which one of these you go with I'm sure you'll enjoy the ride.

Edit: This has always been on my want list. Some day I'll have one.IMG_8399.jpg

I'm thinking the retirement car will be one of these. Some hard decisions with pro's and con's with each.

    C6 Z06

Cost is 40-57K plus 2-5K. See below.

Pro/Con depending on how one looks at it- 6 speed manual only.

This is GM's race car. This share's the same frame as the ZR1 (aluminum/magnesum).

Con/pro is the LS7. This motor is killer, but some of the heads were machined wrong (canada or mexico...nobody knows) and you don't know if you have a ticking time bomb. To fix the factory heads it costs 2400.00 and it highly recommeded / or purchase aftermarket ones. This is also a great time to do a camshaft headers, intake, injectors, tune and roll around with 600 hp rocket.

    Performance stats:

    0-60 3.7 seconds
    1/4 mile 11.7 seconds
    curb weight 3126-3175 lbs
    1.01 lateral G

    2009_chevrolet_corvette_DSC_9870-1.jpg

    2013 427 Corvette. 48-65K plus 2-5k for heads

This has a lot of the Z06 parts (engine/trans/rear axle/carbon fiber hood/fenders) and ZR1 wheels with magnetic ride shocks. The frame is steel like the Grand Sport and comes only in converatable.

This has the same issue with the heads. Some people go 4K and drop a valve and others go 175,000 without an issue. Go figure.

Cost is a little higher than the Z06, but not much. Maybe a couple grand if that. This would be for someone that likes having a buttload of power but doesn't track the car all the time. The ride is a lot better in these cars.

    Performance stats:

    0-60 3.9
    1/4 mile 12.2
Curb weight 3404 lbs. Guess weight does matter.

    e82449c2b6ab4747ad702a79840d1b96.jpg

C6 ZR-1. Cost is 74-100K+ depending on how much crack the owner has been smoking. These are awesome cars by any standard...but these were 113-125k brand new.

These are spendy. The cheapest one in the US right now is in Montana, has 25K miles on it for 74,000.00

These have the LS9 motor. These do not require pulling the top end off. With 638 hp...I would just invest in good tires so the car didn't try and kill me on every outing.

Car is a bit wider, carbon fiber brakes, and the ultimate C6 Corvette that will make you crap ones pants.

    Performance stats:

    0-60 3.3 seconds
    1/4 mile 11.2
    Curb weight 3333 lbs

    2009_chevrolet_corvette-zr1_c6-zr1-008-33628.jpg

C8 Z-51 LT2/3 Stingray Corvette. 60K- however deep your pocketbook goes. This one is 75K with 7200 miles. I have seen targa top vettes for 60K and 1900 miles. I like this style convertable.

What can I say. The performance is there with a 495 hp car.

Now my wife would totally go for this car. She loves them and I might never see it. Not sure that is a wise purchase.

    Performance stats:

    0-60 2.8 sec
    1/4 mile 11.2
    Curb weight 3647 lbs

    fc0fb7ea-3e40-4f08-a769-5340ecd23ba9.jpg

Now at these costs, can't discount the Shelby 500. This one is the cheapest in the country for 70K. Typical costs are 70- how deep is the ocean floor.

Never been a Ford guy...but damn these are some sweet cars. I have a guy at work that has a 2014 GT500 and that is stupid fast.

760 hp of American Eagles under the hood that will never pass up an oportunity to pull into a gas station.

In the vette line, I'd vote for the C8, but my heart still says Shelby...

Curious though, why no GT-R in the mix if you're sitting at these price points??

Is this a reality or hopes and dreams thread?

because I’m hopeful I’ll be able to score one of these some day so I can fly around the country and visit you TRDs :D

My vote is still the ct5 blackwing, there is just something special a out a big ol comfy MT sedan thay is quicker then most everyrhing on the road. Supercharged v8’s are a thing of beauty.

Otherwise my vote is a new Vett or GTR. They new mid engine vett seem leaps and bounds better then anything of the past. I would take a lower hp mid engine over any of the previous generations no matter how much power or how many farkles they have.

    The Vette is a C6 Z06 (2006) and the Porsche is a Carrera S (2009).
I was a bow tie guy until that car and GM’s LS7 fiasco. Basically a street legal race car, the appetite for the sodium filled exhaust valves was the turd in the punch bowl. Some of GM’s early attempts to address their admitted own head machining geometry errors were amateurish, laughable, but at least really screwed those unfortunate souls that lost engines out of warranty. Shame, because it was a decent touring car that was really fast with a cheap interior, but cheap interiors were expected. Motor bombs weren’t.
The Porsche had the PDK and Sports Chrono option that gave driving map choices that were totally different personalities. Sports Plus gave you launch and red line shifts both up and down, while normal mode was, normal. Launch was violent and made me smile. Not as fast as the Vette, it liked to turn and overall quality was superior to the Vette. By a lot.
Both vehicles are icons for their respective brands and thus polarizing so in the end you do you, but I vote Porsche.

Not really close to retirement, but I have been really struck with the new supras. MSRP isn’t bad, would only lose 20 or so thousand to drive it for 20 years if the trend holds.

We are closing in on a year of ownership for our 2023 RAV4 Limited. I love this vehicle.

I did an oil change at 1500 miles and then the dealer did one at 5k. We are closing in on 9k miles. My wife drove to Montana last week and averaged 28 mpg going freeway speeds (up to 80 mph) the entire way and running AC on full blast.

At this rate this vehicle should easily last us until we’re too old to drive. Next discussion is what to do with our pickup before I retire. We have about 7 years to figure that out. My 08 is at 150k and I average about 15k miles per year. I expect that to go up slightly when we start traveling a little more in the summer and fall.

My guess is we’ll stick with a half ton and our smaller travel trailer.

    I'd take a C6 over a C8. Wouldn't say no to the Shelby either.
