Retirement vehicle

Sounds like ya got yourself a very supportive wife.
So, does that change the search?

 

I guess I would be appreciative of them shooting straight before the transaction happens, but I would still have a hard time w/this...

Growing up, travel in the vehicle meant freedom; stop when you want, see what you want, snack when you want, and most importantly see not just the destination but everything along the way. My dad was good about not just grinding out miles, but trying to give us an experience along the way. Our last big road trip, we drove up through Canada and then took a ferry from Price Rupert into Alaska.... I was 16 and did NOT want to go, because I wanted to stay home by myself and enjoy a few weeks of being a HS kid w/no parents. Obviously, I was not allowed to do this, and after a couple of days of protest, I really started to enjoy the trip. Ultimately, it is one that I still remember and think about to this day.

Younger generations just don't seem to have the same patience to sit in a vehicle for long road trips anymore...

 

Well for my RETIREMENT VEHICLE.

Toyota SR5 Tundra. I bought it back in 2019 had roughly 21,500 miles on it. I will take a picture and post it.
Now it is roughly 61,000.
Yes, I have made a few changes, but I have NOT touched the engine.
I love my Tundra.
I have also enjoyed being here on the forum. Yes, I did leave for a bit, but I came back.

 

I plan to alternate between my 2021 Tundra 1794 and my 2002 4Runner. Might keep the 2021 Camry. They will probably all three out last me

 

This 22 Frontier is my retirement vehicle. It's been great and for the price point with what you get, now having driven it over 30K miles, it's hard to do better IMHO. I was asked if I wanted to check out one of the last Titan SV gasser's my dealer will ever get. I always found them to be a bit off when it came to looks but not any more. There's a new first place, but won't get into that. I took a test drive and quite frankly was impressed. Nissan's attempt with the Cummins version wasn't great, but at least they tried. This Titan gasser is the real deal. I don't want or need a fullsize truck, but this Titan almost became my last truck. 3% and 43K with discounts. In light of things, the NA 400 HP Titan V8 has been reliable and would be my fullsize choice now since production stops sometime this summer which is now upon us.

 

This thread just got real exciting. Can't wait to see what you end up in.

 

Shelby gets my vote....

 

Even though I have my LX450 which is set up for off-roading/expedition travel it needs a lot of TLC. My buddy and I (I’m recently retired) we’re supposed to travel around with his FJ Cruiser, but every year, he had excuses not to retire. So been questioning about keeping it. Almost got into a 18 Tundra Platinum last year, but pulled out of the deal due to crazy interest rates.
Was always a fan of “convertible” type trucks, and many moons ago had a 73 and 74 Ford Bronco. In 2020, I purchased a 79 IH Traveler, but it became a frame off, 5.3/4L60 swap, rotisserie build, and I just didn’t have the time, so sold it.
I would really like to get an early K5 Blazer with the full removable top, but prices are just insane. Still might get one as a “project” if I sell my LX. I also have a “speedster” project that I’ve been chipping away at since 2018. It’s based on this, and it would be cool to travel NA to attend events pulling it with a K5. Lol! Dreaming…

 

We have had a zero electronics policy on roadtrips since the kiddo was old enough to hold one. We have done a lot of US roadtrips (overland type travel) and besides a 4hr traffic jam on the way back from NM a few years ago it has worked well. Hard to go back probably though once it starts.
I retired early last year and we mapped out our travel plans, it is good to be on the same page. I ended up selling the tundra because our focus was international travel (we are road tripping England as I type this). So as you budget and make considerations, I would weigh that for finance purposes too if that is a consideration. (If you haven’t)

 

And to be fair… IMO the driver always enjoys the road trip more than the passenger lol

I don’t actually miss the tundra all that much. Seeing the world has been an incredible experience. Even with my love of driving it has been well worth the trade off!

 

I like the Shelby of all these options. However, no matter which one of these you go with I'm sure you'll enjoy the ride.

Edit: This has always been on my want list. Some day I'll have one.

 

In the vette line, I'd vote for the C8, but my heart still says Shelby...

Curious though, why no GT-R in the mix if you're sitting at these price points??

 

no C7? they're right in the middle of those price ranges...

but I’m a long way off from the reality of retirement so I’ll just follow along

 

My vote is still the ct5 blackwing, there is just something special a out a big ol comfy MT sedan thay is quicker then most everyrhing on the road. Supercharged v8’s are a thing of beauty.

Otherwise my vote is a new Vett or GTR. They new mid engine vett seem leaps and bounds better then anything of the past. I would take a lower hp mid engine over any of the previous generations no matter how much power or how many farkles they have.

 

The Vette is a C6 Z06 (2006) and the Porsche is a Carrera S (2009).
I was a bow tie guy until that car and GM’s LS7 fiasco. Basically a street legal race car, the appetite for the sodium filled exhaust valves was the turd in the punch bowl. Some of GM’s early attempts to address their admitted own head machining geometry errors were amateurish, laughable, but at least really screwed those unfortunate souls that lost engines out of warranty. Shame, because it was a decent touring car that was really fast with a cheap interior, but cheap interiors were expected. Motor bombs weren’t.
The Porsche had the PDK and Sports Chrono option that gave driving map choices that were totally different personalities. Sports Plus gave you launch and red line shifts both up and down, while normal mode was, normal. Launch was violent and made me smile. Not as fast as the Vette, it liked to turn and overall quality was superior to the Vette. By a lot.
Both vehicles are icons for their respective brands and thus polarizing so in the end you do you, but I vote Porsche.

 

Not really close to retirement, but I have been really struck with the new supras. MSRP isn’t bad, would only lose 20 or so thousand to drive it for 20 years if the trend holds.

 

We are closing in on a year of ownership for our 2023 RAV4 Limited. I love this vehicle.

I did an oil change at 1500 miles and then the dealer did one at 5k. We are closing in on 9k miles. My wife drove to Montana last week and averaged 28 mpg going freeway speeds (up to 80 mph) the entire way and running AC on full blast.

At this rate this vehicle should easily last us until we’re too old to drive. Next discussion is what to do with our pickup before I retire. We have about 7 years to figure that out. My 08 is at 150k and I average about 15k miles per year. I expect that to go up slightly when we start traveling a little more in the summer and fall.

My guess is we’ll stick with a half ton and our smaller travel trailer.

 

I'd take a C6 over a C8. Wouldn't say no to the Shelby either.
