DD exhaust w/LT headers w/sound clip pg 8 post 229

I placed the order on June 18
I confirmed the part number for my ECU the following day
I got an email saying it was shipped on June 24
I received it by USPS on June 28

I did request that he get it out quickly because I was under time constraints. Not sure if that made any difference or not.

 

not happy with this I told him to do it like the factory pipes, about a 45 degree angle behind the wheel - both driver and passenger sides, not at the bumper.











Pissed about this. I told him this was to be a bolt on system. If there were issues to contact me. He didn't seem to want me to be up there watching him so I respected that. Then he inexplicably cut off the flanges on the rear side of the mufflers. I don't guess it matters as long as I'm content with this muffler and resonator. But damn

 

I like the exhaust placement, but I may be a little bit biased.

I'm gonna talk to him tomorrow about it. But tell him I've got a trip coming up and I'm gonna give it some time to see what I think. It was just a shock because it was not at all what I was expecting

 

Sounds like the way you want it done is actually how this truck came with the TRD catback. Let me see if I can find an old pic.
I had to change my tail pipe placement, because I lowered the rear 4 inches and the tail pipes would have contacted the leaf springs.

 

Really was just expecting it to be like my factory set up was on the passenger side, but with black tips and One on each side

It may grow on me. I'll give it some time.

Your exhaust looks nice. My truck spends time working offroad (as opposed to playing offroad), and i would have crushed the exhaust tip multiple times over if it were exiting out near the rear bumper. If my truck was more of an offroad toy, then no doubt i'd end up smooshing that tip flat as soon as i press 4wd low play button on the dash.

It's got a quiet, deep rumble at idle and you can drive it easy where it stays reasonably quiet but if you get into it, you know it. Nothing outrageous just sounds good

It runs amazing. Either accelerating from a low speed or catching passing gear it literally feels nothing like before. It was hard not to just keep my foot in it my whole drive tonight.

keep searching for words, but I'll just say it greatly exceeded my expectations. Responsive. Fun.

What's the old butt-dyno think you've picked up HP wise?

 

My guess is it's a legit 30 to 35 plus. I'm trying to be realistic here but it's a significant difference

But, and this is a big but, it feels like so much more because of that ECU programming. And by that I mean it's not just about what you would see on a dyno at max throttle and mostly in the upper rpm's. Yes, you get it at Max throttle and high RPMs but you also feel it where we need it on the street and off-road - not on a race track. Much more torque at lower RPMs.

To my butt dyno while street driving it feels like 50+

The only thing comparable I can recall is when I rebuilt a couple of mustang engines ('66 fastback and '79 cobra) back in the day which were both coincidentally about the size of our engines in these trucks. One was 289 one was a 302

I put in really nice high performance cams, bigger valves, 4 barrel carbs and full dual exhaust systems. The responsiveness in this engine is now feels similar to those. The biggest difference being this truck weighs about 2000 pounds more

 

I can 100% agree with this, I installed stainless steel works headers with high flow cats on my supercharged 2021 tundra and the truck is just disgusting. Ever seen a half ton truck smoke a diesel? the amount of air and rev limit you get not to mention being able to run at a true 10.1-10.4 AFR under boost with full long tubes is just banana’s!

now with that being said, if you put headers on a tundra you will have to delete MIL and CEL lights with a tune. No way around it and if you just clear the code it will just keep coming on.

 

OTT won’t turn off MIL or CEL lights matter fact they won’t even tune your truck with a check engine light. If you want custom tuning message @snivilous.

 

Thanks, you are correct about OTT. But I already got a programmed ECU from quantum auto tuning per Keith Carty's rec which does handle those issues and is also programmed for the headers and performance

 

yeah headers are a bitch on these trucks especially with supercharger applications. Toyotas stock ECU has so many government regulations built into it from the factory covering emissions. It’s funny because they build the tundras in Texas now (zero emissions). Maybe they just assume everyone’s going to live in smog only states idk.

Like prospeed for example they wanted to upgrade the injectors , fuel system and relocate the wide band just to even tune my truck. So it’s little weird once you start adding on bolt-on’s. Especially when it starts messing with 02 sensors.

To be honest idk if I could have gotten as far as I have without this forum.

Mine is a 1stGEN and I believe was built in Indiana.

 

Actually Texas has emissions in counties with a metroplex, IE: counties surrounding Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, etc.
My 03 will be emissions exempt in TX in 2028, my 06 in 2031.

 

With so much going on it's got me hyper sensitive to things out of the ordinary. You would think I would know this after so many many years.

edit: brain fart. Not the check engine, but the maintenance required light blinks for what seems like a very long time

Does the check engine light blink when you start up the truck and then stop? It seems like it does that a little bit longer than it should even if it is supposed to. But there are no codes.

yeah, need to live more west ! even if I lived in those counties plenty of shops don’t even care they will just pass the inspection and move on.

I was in the car business for 12 years in dallas I watched cars pass emissions and safety inspections that shouldn’t have passed.

 

It should just briefly light up while cranking then go out aa soon as it's started. Maybe on for 1 second during cranking to on. My guess is its staying on a hair longer due to new ecu being tuned to ignore cold start air inj codes? Either way sounds like a great review. I want to dump my tips "hidden" pointing down next to spare location. ..for clearance and looks.

When I was a state inspector, that was one of the things we'd look for to make sure the CEL was operational.

Yeah I didn't either.
Just curious since I was ordering for an 03. I heard the DC's and Sequoias use the immobilizer from 04-ish up I think. But I guess not, since yours works.

 

I think it's just on certain packages, but I could be wrong
