trailer fuse ?

so still battling with my tundra brake lights. from doing resarch there should be a fuse for it.for the factory tow package..i have the box behind drivers tail light..is this it and should it be bolted to something for a ground and I can not get the fuse out and I pulled hard. trick ? its a 30 amp fuse. If the red wire shows in picture, thats not going to the black box in picture, thats going to the brake controller that someone added

 

That looks like the towing package fuse my truck came with. Not sure where the ground is but it's not anywhere directly off that wiring. Probably on the back end of the truck.

Not sure what your actual issue is, but look closely at all the wiring. Obviously yeah check that fuse, but check all the wiring at the back end of the truck associated with the tow package. Mine had a few problems, but they only showed up as the trailer blinker not working. Truck blinkers worked fine.

I haven't tried taking that type fuse out for a while. I'd say gently, with pliers. Wiggle and pull.

 

That does not look like mine at all. Mine look like any old inline fuse. More loke this kind

Yeah the fuse that I assume came with the dealership tow package was a large one like the OPs. When I replaced the original trailer wiring just a couple months ago, the new stuff came with a fuse more like Bluegrapes, so now that's what mine looks like too.

From what I've read on here, the trucks that were sold from dealerships with tow packages will have the large fuse.

 

how come you replaced the trailer wiring, can that box in the back go bad.? I had an aftermarket one go bad on me in a 4runner. Starting to think thats my problem fuse looked good.

 

One of my trailer lights wasn't working. Worked when connected to my Tacoma, but not the Tundra, so I knew there was a problem with Tundra wiring. Everything looked original to 2002. 7-pin socket & wiring, towing package wiring, all of it, so I replaced all of it. More likely you have a connection or ground somewhere that's bad. But I didn't mind replacing it all.

Turned out on mine to be a crimped connection that kind of exploded. I could have just replaced that connection and been good. But again, I felt like 22 years was a good service life for those wiring harnesses/connections. And I didn't find the bad connection until I had already bought the new stuff and was in the process of replacing it.

I want to thank all of you above...when I asked this question b4 it seemed to go no place. when I asked again with a picture I got helpful answers. So i picked up a new in line fuse system like listed above and installed at lunch. I NOW have trailer connections ...well at least my test light says I do,,,which it did not b4. however the pass side turn signal is a weaker signal on test lamp...but plug is very dirty so bet thats it.

If I had to guess, all your connections could use a cleaning, but I'm interested to see if the trailer lights work first. My wiring was just good enough to light up the 7-pin test lamp, but not the trailer lights.

I ordered both the 7-pin socket & wiring, and the wiring harness, and when I pulled the conduit and electrical tape apart to install them, found this. Not a bad idea to trace every towing package wire at the back end of your truck and take a good look at the crimp connections and grounds. They could probably all use a cleaning, or even replace all the connections if you have a good set of wire crimpers. No idea how I was still getting enough power through this connection to light up the test lamp.

 

true, i have power at the plug with a test lamp, and one side is weak, so I do plan to go through all connections

 

I'm glad you posted this. I was trying to remember who it was that found this crimp nightmare in their wiring, obscured. I planned to hunt for it, but didn't have the energy.

I really wish people would wisen up and learn how to use sealed crimps for external wiring. It shocks me how little thought some people give to wiring things that are subject to the environment, especially things that are critical to road safety like lights and trailer wiring.

 

You've mentioned that a few times and I only just now realize what you're talking about, I think. I've seen insulated crimps, but not "sealed". I just googled and realized that's a very specific thing, but I think a specialty thing? Like not something you're going to find at ACE Hardware? Looks like a pretty genius idea...Something I'll need to have on hand for future work. Is this what you mean?

 

No problem! Let me know if I can help in any other way. I just noe got around to getting u the actual pic. The one i am holding below is my factory ( or from toyota dealership ) installed tow package. It has a yellow 20 Amp fuse in it.

 

I wonder what accounts for dealers using different style fuses? Just preference, or does it depend on region or the truck's package?

My truck is a limited, and I noticed it came with the 'all-weather' package, which I think includes a more powerful starter and a different battery. No idea if that impacts how they approach the tow package.

 

Not sure. I dont tbink i have any winter packahe though. Whats that, heated seats.

 

I havent had a chance to get back to it, but like siad replacing the old fuse assembly with a new in line with a fuse helped a lot. dont need to pull a trailer for a few more weeks, so ive got time . tons of other projects going too.

interesting yours is a 20 amp, my "factory/dealer" that I replaced was a 30 amp. And my owners manual says 30 amp

 

the winter package, depending on region can include a bigger starter. in the case of my 2002 it means a 2kw starter instead of 1.4kw
